Fajitas Mixta

We returned a week later to sample more dishes from their menu. I ordered the Quesabirrias -Slow cooked short ribs with melted mozarella cheese, cilantro, and pickle red onions on homemade corn tortillas. My girlfriend had the Ensalada de Mango. Both were excellent. The ice cold hibiscus tea is highly recommended!

Cheese enchiladas and quesabirria tacos

We finally tried Oaxaca and are soo glad we did! We got two items for takeout: cheese enchiladas with green sauce and quesabirria tacos. Both were colorful, flavorful, filling, and out of this world!! There are tables to dine in, so this isn't just a takeout joint. Highly recommend this authentic little spot. The woman behind the counter was very pleasant and accommodating, too.

Delicious. Amazing guacamole. The enchiladas are fresh and not heavy like found at other places. Friendly and helpful staff

Small storefront that is not fancy but this is all about Oaxacan dishes. Loved the birria tacos, carnitas, and chipotle shrimp pasta.

This is the Mexican Restaurant you should consider!…read more My girlfriend and I were in the mood for Mexican food. We noticed there were quite a few authentic restaurants in the Belmar area, which quite frankly, made it difficult to pick just which one to go to. However, we trusted the very positive reviews posted on Google and decided to try El Rey. Making reservations online was very easy and although we had one for 4:45pm, we arrived a half hour earlier and had no issues being seated. Being that it was still early, the restaurant was mostly empty and we were able to pick a table of our choice. The restaurant was clean, wonderfully decorated and very quaint. Once we picked our table, we sat and took notice of the gorgeous chairs that were adorned with beautiful artwork. The young lady who served us was just wonderful. Wish I had taken note of her name. She was very friendly and quite patient as I mispronounced the name of the dish I was ordering. I went with beef Alambres while my girlfriend picked chicken nachos. We were not prepared for what came next... HUGE plates filled with food. The portions were immense. The plate of nachos was a huge, heaping mountain of food -- enough for more than two people. We loved it! The beef Alambres arrived on a sizzling plate with a large portion of rice and beans along with warm flour tortillas. I'm a guy with a huge appetite and it was an effort for me to finish it all (but I did!). As we finished our meal, the owner came over to our table to ask how we were doing. We came to find that this was his second eatery -- the original being in Asbury Park. We were so happy to find a privately owned restaurant like this with great food and friendly, excellent service that was thriving like this. The final eye-opener came when the bill arrived. For two people eating a massive amount of food with accompanying bottles of soda, it came to about $25 a person, including tip. That's pretty amazing in times like these when going out to eat has become generally unaffordable. As we walked out of El Rey, my girlfriend and I discussed what a great meal and experience we just had. I think the words, "This is our new favorite restaurant" was uttered. We will absolutely return as there are so many choices on the menu that we did not have the opportunity to try. So, if you are faced with having to pick the right Mexican eatery, I can confidently recommend El Rey. The food, service and ambience is superb. Thank you for treating us so well during our first visit. See you again soon!

Rather tough to chew and didn't melt. Did have flavor tho. Saw several dishes on the menu and probably chose the wrong one. I'd go back if I'm ever in the area, but this time was an incomplete pass.

This isn't a nice sit down spot; the interior is nothing fancy. However the tacos are solid!…read more Whenever I order tacos here I get them to-go and have never had any issues. When we picked up takeout the other night they mislabeled a few of our tacos but thankfully the order was correct. My go-to the order is the Baja mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco. It's one taco per order but they're very filling! They give you a ton of chips with your order, so definitely not necessary to order extra, unless you want the almost famous salsa bar (which I will say is worth it...their salsa verde in particular is so good).

What a disappointment! I had expected so much flavor and love from Surf Taco but it was just not…read moreit! First off, the girl who took our order looked like she hated her life. I stared right into her eyes as I walked in and greeted her with a smile and said hi. She just looked at me as if there was a fly on my forehead. I awkwardly stood there to read the menu and ended getting the mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco all for a combo. Combo comes with nachos, beans and rice. I would skip this as the beans and rice were bland. They didn't add any seasoning but honestly it's kind of hard to mess rice and beans up. The chips were ok but you'd need queso cheese to compliment it which is extra. The mahi taco lacked so much flavor and the fried fish was cold. I was so disappointed but still ate since the food here wasn't exactly cheap either. Fortunately, the grilled shrimp was the come back for flavor here and saved the day. Maybe just don't order the fish from here? The chef was in an F it mood tonight? Who knows but lord knows I won't be making the same mistake twice. The salsa bar there was intriguing but the flavor and spice disappointed just like everything else on the menu. I don't think I would come back to surf taco. There's honestly so many family owned restaurants here that we'd rather support who puts more love into their food.
