I've been wanting to come here for a while. I saw on social media that this place serves raw tuna salad sandwich and we had to come here because we're sushi fans! Grown-up Tuna sandwich, which is minced raw ahi tuna with soy sriracha mayo and pickles on egg bread roll. This was the best tuna salad ever created and produced! This is basically tuna poke on a sandwich and we all loved it. We were upset when we were done! Should've ordered two. LOL. Seared tuna salad, which is seared tuna with pickled carrot, red onion and wasabi vinaigrette. We thought it was pretty good. The tuna was seared nicely. Hubs think they should have a lightly seared tuna sandwich, too! LOL Chicken salad sandwich, which is chicken salad on egg bread roll. Hubs said that this was good, too. Their rolls are really soft here. I asked if we could buy another roll but was told that we have to order another sandwich. The owner makes enough rolls for his sandwiches. We also ordered soup but forgot the name of it. I think it was carrot ginger and it wasn't bad. The owner was giving us little samples of all his soups, as soon as we walked in. If you live in the freehold area, you have to try this place. Now I'm about to make a very bold statement. This place served me the best sandwich I've ever eaten, pork loin and swiss with bacon jam. Such a simple sandwich and I can't stop thinking about it. The corn chowder was incredible too. I still can't believe I stumbled cross this place while waiting for my pho next door. We used to visit at least once a month. The problem is that over the past few years, they switched to only off more of the exotic soups, where we would greatly prefer a standard chicken, beef, or veggie broth base. You will never find these offered anymore, not a single soup. Even today, the soups are: Hot and Sour Beer and Cheese Carrot Broccoli Black Bean How about a nice Chicken and Rice, or a good Minestrone as some of the offerings? As such, we don't bother anyone. I finally got a chance to go to 10 Course Tasting Dinner. The best way to describe it is "WOW!". Started it off with a cold blueberry soup and finished it off with a strawberry cheesecake. My favorites were the bacon jam and seared tuna. Every dish was delicious. Chef Mike described every course as they served them. He uses locally sourced ingredients. On this night he used all locally grown summer fruits and vegetables. Each and every course was delicious. There wasn't anything left on any of my plates. It's a BYOB. 4.8 (I would give this 5 stars if the website was not misleading)...ALL the Food we tried was excellent and creative, and though the menu is limited to what waa accurately listed online, we had no trouble finding items we liked. In fact, some of our choices overlapped as we struggled to choose, so after trying tastings of all the soups offered spontaneously as we entered (nice inviting touch!) we three ladies decided to each get our own soup (automatically a large portion that could be a light meal). We shared two sandwiches (our favorite included roasted sweet potato with other veggies on a fresh sweet potato roll but the beef and cheese choice was also very good!) This small deli sized restaurant had an ambiance that was fun and nostalgic with some small antique and vintage items along the countertop similar to our childhood toys and holiday decor with children's notes and drawings mixed in and a variety of art on the walls. The owner (we think...the only person working who seemed like he chose the menu and was proud of his creations) was very pleasant and friendly, cutting our sandwiches into quarters knowing we would be sharing...The ONLY reason Tatchens didn't get a five from us is that the pictures on the website look like the food is served on "real" plates but instead was all on paper plates or cardboard containers with plastic utensils...This will be a new area favorite for take out or picnics but the delicious food deserves better plating for those who eat in!!! Tatchen's may have won awards for "Best Fast Food in Monmouth County" but though served right away, this is not your typical fast food...I'm not sure most young kids would find items they like unless very adventurous eaters but we recommend adults who like home cooking rather than typical fast food try this place yourself - you'll understand why we rate it so highly!!! read more

The place sounds better than it tastes. The menu doesn't have a ton of items which is usually a good sign. After trying some of the sandwhiches the standout here is the bread. You can taste that it is freshly made but the contents of the sandwiches seem like an afterthought. The chicken salad was bland and needed something else to it. Nothing stood out to the sandwich other than the fresh bread. , The grown up tuna sandwich was more of the same. Not the best. The soups were better but I am not the biggest soup fan. The other standout were the chocolate chip cookies. They were delicious and a perfect end to an otherwise average meal. Come here for the fresh bread and cookies. 3 stars all the way. read more

This place is the reason why yelp exists. I was randomly in freehold, a town I am quite unfamiliar with. I had an eaten all day and it was approaching 5 PM, but I needed something good and healthy so I turned to yelp. I came across tatchans, which stood out with a mind blowing five star rating. Something I have possibly never seen before. From the outside the place was unimpressive. But once I walked in, I knew I was entering a special place. The owner and head chef is a culinary master, with a dedication to his craft, not to be exceeded by any other. As a step to the counter, he noticed I was visibly confused and offered me a sampling of each one of his six soups. A selection of soups made from scratch, and constantly changing with the seasons. All the soups were excellent. You can't go wrong. in addition i had two sandwiches which were excellent. he beaks the bread for his sandwiches every morning. they've got solid 5 stars for a reason. he didn't even know he had a good yelp score he is completely uninvolved. so tatchens yelp score is pure. this place is for foodies only. read more

This lunch restaurant is a family-owned, hidden gem on the border of Freehold and Howell. The owner bakes his own breads and makes fresh and delicious soups, sandwiches, and salads. The menu is updated each week reflecting the most in-season ingredients and they will email you with the weekly menu each Monday if you join the mailing list. Since I am at work most days during lunch, my plan is to take out each of the delicious soups so that I can bring them to work or try them at home. This is a lovely mom and pop shop serving lunch (soup salad and sandwiches). This is not your average deli, as the offerings change each week, and feature delicious items such as the Seared Tuna Salad and Peach soup (cold, and so good!). Sandwiches and salads are fairly priced and are quite large in size making it a good value in my opinion. They even feature fresh ingredients from a local farm, which is really cool. They need to get the word out As you drive by on Route 9, the shopping center sign for the various businesses says "TACHENS" What the heck is Tachens, one would think? Is it a sewing store, a barber, a hobby shop? No it is a great spot to have fresh delicious homemade soups and sandwiches. But nobody has any idea what Tachens is. The sign needs to let the public know that it is a great soup and sandwich shop. Tip: the store baked bread/rolls and cookies are awesome. read more

We went in for lunch, onion soup and two turkey sandwiches. Very good rich onion soup, rich, lots of depth. The owner gave us other soups to try-so good, complex, but I'm not a big soup person. This small gem is in Chadwick shopping center (just N of the Acme on rt 9). Its a small menu that changes weekly, but the quality and flavor of the food is excellent.
