Very good food but consistently very, very slow service and getting the food out. It never has gotten better even after coming here for several years. Possibly only one cook for the entire restaurant. Need to do better. Also, be warned about the cost of a side order of quacamole! A small dish containing a small portion of quacamole made from most likely ONE avocado is a ridiculous $12.50! Expensive? No...Ripoff? YES! Raising this place to five stars, and doing it reluctantly because I don't want anyone else to find out about this incredible restaurant! Also, it's a BYOB! Every time I eat here, I always say it myself that this place has the freshest best tasting grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, seasoned vegetables, salsa, and food! I don't know how they do it, but it's so delicious and served perfectly hot every time! Actually, this is one of my two go to restaurants and favorite spots that I use all the time! It's not uncommon for me to go here every weekend for even eight weeks in a row. While the service is excellent. the food is cooked to order. So you may wait a little longer than you're used to for your food, but that's the reason why it's so delicious and so perfectly served! If you'd rather be served faster there's plenty of other options to go. You still get served fast enough though and they do put a nice bowl of chips and salsa on your table while you wait. I am sort of stubborn so every time I go I get the grilled chicken and shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas. You could also get regular tortillas. This meal is so perfect for me. I'm never gonna change but oh my goodness they have one heck of a menu. Also, this place is absolutely beautifully decorated, and you feel like you're in Mexico City! My friend and I both ordered the house salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was so fresh and delicious and the salad had plenty of fresh avocado, black beans, and corn. The location is great. On the corner of Main Street in downtown Freehold. Aside from that the food is just alright. We got Street tacos and Biria tacos. As well as enchiladas. Food was not bad but it wasn't anything that made it memorable. The service was nice and the ambiance is okay. There is a low key lunch place vibe from here. The reason for the low star is because in this location, you are surrounded by good food everywhere. Three doors down are 2 other Mexican food places. And they are just as good if not better. I've been wanting to come here for a while. We decided to give this place a try after work. We got seated immediately after arriving. The restaurant is large, with white string lights draped across every inch of the ceiling. Paintings of Frida Kahlo hang on the brick wall near the back and at the very back of the restaurant is an "Instagram photo spot" that resembles a large patch of grass with the words "Texas Mexican Restaurant" written on it in white light-up letters. Papel picado hangs amongst the string lights as well. Daughter ordered 1 Enchilada and 2 flauta combo, which has carnitas enchilada and chicken flautas. She wanted pork and chicken flautas but was told they only had chicken. The combo comes along with rice and beans. She was craving for flautas and was happy to see it on the menu. She loved it and said it was flavorful and saucy. Next, hubs ordered Pancita, which is tripe in a spicy broth and it's served with cilantro, onions and corn tortillas. He was craving for tripe and soup and this was the perfect marriage. Hubs said he liked it a lot. Lastly, I ordered # 33 Camarones con salsa de ajo, which is shrimp sautéed with garlic sauce and white wine. It's served with white rice, salad and green plantains. I liked it and thought that it was very garlicky. Hubs ordered the horchata and thought it was good and refreshing. The portions were small and Hubs didn't think the value was there. This restaurant seems very authentic. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive. It is a very casual feel and is brightly decorated. The food was delicious. My only complaint was that I was not able to get the steak in my fajitas rare as it was very thinly sliced steak. My companions had enchilada mole and quesadillas fajitas. First time here yesterday. Went in between lunch and dinner with my mom. We were the only ones there. The place was clean and the atmosphere was festive. We were welcomed in immediately our server was super friendly. When we looked at the menu we realized we had just missed the lunch menu. It is available from 11-3 and it was 330. It had so many items to choose from for only $10.95. Our server said no problem you can order from there. So we did and everything was delicious. We had the chicken empanadas and the fajita tacos. Food is generally good, but they've started adding extra charges. I've eaten inside a few times, but nothing special. I mostly order through DoorDash. Initially, they used to give you free chips & salsa just as if you ate in the restaurant, but they stopped and started charging for them. I recently asked for a few extra tortillas, and again, there were extra charges. I didn't approve of the added fees. In the restaurant, I wasn't charged while I dined. I guess your reason for charging on DoorDash is due to the fees on the platform, but instead of making your service worse, why don't you just charge more for the dish overall? To a returning customer, it would be better if you wanted him to feel valued. Just my two cents. read more

With a name like "Texas Mexican" it's not something you readily see around NJ, so you know.... Hubby and I had to come here to give it a try, as my extended family is and still lives in El Paso TX.. I just want to say, nopalitos (cactus) like okra has to be cooked properly- or it gets slimy and gross- edible? yessss, but still gross... well, that and cactus has crazy sharp thorns, and no one wants to bite those babies!! I grew up eating cactus so, when I see it on a menu, yes I get those childhood memories and I want to order them and have that happy memory again. Anyway- Hubby and I both ordered the above special, him minus the cactus. He order Horchata and I had the Agua de Jamaica, both were so refreshing and went well with the chips and salsa. Our dinners arrived it took a little while, but we were okay with that, and they also have signs that say each meal is made fresh, so please be patient... no joke, when our dinner arrived and we took our first bite, ohhhmyyygoodness, it was worth every minute of that wait!!! My nopalitos were absolute perfection, my Nana would have approved!! it was a lot of food, not gonna lie, hubby and I took the burritos and rice home. It's not a huge restaurant, but its homey, warm, clean and the staff is fantastic and the food is exactly as I had hoped it would be, and for an instant, just an instant.. I was 8yrs old sitting in my Nana's little kitchen talking about my day as she cooked our dinner. Good Food does that sometimes, brings back happy memories. This is a wonderful little restaurant. There are two other Mexican restaurants within 5 minutes of this place, but I'm glad I chose to eat here. The staff was very welcoming and the food was perfect. Just the right seasoning and reasonably priced. I was impressed with the empanadas (YUM!). The Carne asada was tasty also. I wasn't crazy about the chips, but everything else was excellent. I like the atmosphere and the food is good, but be warned that the food is definitely more Tex-Mex than Mexican. As I have said, the restaurant is nicely laid out and it is an attractive place to enjoy your meal. The service is decent and the food is good. Not exceptional, but good. The burrito was a good choice to go with. The chimichanga looked pretty solid, as well. If you want good Mexican food, I would definitely recommend this establishment. We came here for dinner last night and what a meal! Restaurant is in the heart of Freehold where all the restaurants are - there is street parking and there's a lot by the restaurants where you can park. There is outdoor seating, and it's BYOB. My fiancé order the a burrito and enchilada meal - he said he was really good and it was a big portion of food. I myself ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole - omg was this fantastic!! The mole was so well balance and tasted even better with the rice and beans. Like I said before, portions are big! So come hungry! The prices are just ridiculous for the amount of food they serve!! Chicharron as a side for only $4 is an awesome deal, and bonus- they do it incredibly well. I got a chimichanga that they actually got nice and fried, but the filling was boring steak and a cheese that kinda tasted like a polly-o type mozzarella. Some rice or customizable burrito options in there would go a long way. I would not get that again. Guac was really tasty, not spicy at all though- so if you like it with heat you probably need to ask. Loved the chips. We saw this place randomly while in downtown Freehold and it looked inviting from the outside so we went in. Good choice! We were greeted warmly and seated, and overall service was great, very nice server. the served chips and salsa, and offered even more when we finished the basket (we declined to make room for the main course). Everything is made fresh, so they warn you about the wait. But it wasn't that long at all, I had the steak fajitas which were great. Tonight my wife just had to get out for dinner. Problem is we couldn't come up with a place to go, our area isn't a hotbed of restaurants. But Freehold, we hadn't been there in a couple of years. Nicely decorated, lots of color. For starters I had a bowl of Texas ChilI. I love chili but this looked more like a soup. One spoonful and oh yeah, that's chili. And excellent chili it was at that. For my dinner I had the grilled steak Monterey Burrito. Not only did it come with rice and refried beans it came with a fried steak enchilada right next to the burrito. My wife had chicken enchiladas which she enjoyed. That too came with refried beans and rice. Now for the check. All that food, that really good homemade food for under $42 including the tax. The chips were served warm and the salsa was on the mild side. For dinner we ordered the Monterey Chicken Burrito and a Combo plate consisting of a taco salad and quesadilla. The portion sizes of the entrees were large and both meals were served with rice and beans. The Taco salad was mostly lettuce with some grilled chicken on top. Originally was going to Kohinoor Grill next door but they were closed so we just came in for lunch. Service was super slow, even though there were only 3 or 4 groups there. I ordered the lunch 'Mexican tacos' which came with rice and beans. The beans were flavorful but the tacos definitely needed a lot of hot sauce. We also got fajitas, and the chicken was super thin and overcooked. The complimentary chips and salsa in the beginning were good but I think that might have been the best part. At the end, no one came to check up on us and we had to go to the counter to get our check to pay. Overall, I would have probably given them 3.5 stars if not for the super slow service. read more
