From the moment I walked in, the restaurant felt lively and welcoming! Bright, colorful decor with upbeat music playing and Grease on the TVs added a fun, nostalgic vibe. Just great! Best tacos I ever had! The place is nicely decorated, very colorful. With what I assume is Mexican music playing. We started off with fresh homemade chips and salsa. They charge $10 for that, which usually is complementary in most places. But they very good. And came with three different salsas: hot, med (green) and mild. I liked the mild the best. My wife loved the birria chimichanga and I loved the steak tacos. We finished off with a chimichanga with rice pudding inside. They have a large menu with both traditional Mexican dishes and dished that are more familiar to me. Also some "New Creation" items. It has caught my eyes several times driving by and I was so happy to finally have had the opportunity to dine there this weekend! The interior decor is very nice with a colorful Mexican theme and upbeat music. We split the nachos as a starter. It was . The fresh chips and ingredients definitely came through. I had the tacos dorados and my husband had the agave chimichanga. All the food was so delicious and the side of chipotle crema took it to a whole other level. I've never had a go-to Mexican place... until now. El Agave is everything I've been searching for - it packs the flavor and heat (if you like it) in every bite. The price point is so reasonable, portions are good - not too big or too small, and service was great. After reading the reviews, we decided to give this place a try. The restaurant is split into two dining rooms, with the second one being closed off when we went. The room we dined in had walls that were painted yellow, lime green, bright blue, orange, and purple. The walls were adorned with all sorts of cultural items, which ranged from decorative plates to plant pots that resemble Mexican candy skulls. The Mexican flag also hangs over the entrance to the second dining room as well. We ordered the following: We got Esquites (Corn Salad) to share. This is a Mexican street corn salad, topped with mayonnaise, chili powder, lime juice and crumbled cotija cheese. It came with a little container of Tajin. Hubs thought it was a cute promotion but said that the corn salad was ordinary, overall. Daughter and I thought it was pretty good. We like Mexican corn salad. Hubs ordered the Caldo de Res (corn tortilla) which is a spicy Mexican beef and vegetables soup. The bone-in beef ribs were cooked in the broth, giving the soup a rich and meaty flavor. It's served with fresh diced onions, jalapeno, cilantro and lime. He said that he liked it a lot, especially the accompaniments. Daughter and I shared the Paella. It came with seasoned seafood, sausage and shrimp. The rice was saffron scented with crispy toasty rice bits. We liked it a lot and thought it was delicious. I love the saffron rice the most. Hubs ordered horchata because he wanted something different. It tasted ok. I forgot to take a photo of it. The one big con about this place is that there isn't any parking. They're located right by the tracks. We thought that we could park in this lot next door but found out that it's reserved for the other businesses nearby. I think they have parking but it got taped off and we weren't allowed to drive in there. So, we ended up parking nearby at a residential street a few blocks away and walked over. Hidden gem in Freehold! The Mexican food is authentic and delicious! I highly recommend anything that's topped with Chipotle cream sauce or green sauce. They start you with complimentary chips with salsa and a green dip. The best burrito I ever had in my life is the Burrito Agave! The creamy chipotle sauce it's covered in is to die for! It was nice and cheesy inside too! I also had the Enchiladas Enmoladas and the Burrito Bandera. Both were also delicious! The green sauce that's topped on half of the Burrito Bamdera is amazing as well! The ranchera side was good, but not my personal favorite sauce here. I had the rice pudding chimichanga for dessert. It was good, but not something I'd order again. I want to try the Mexican flan or tres leches next time. The menu is huge here. There are so many more dishes to try. El Agave has amazing Mexican food - the best I've had in years. The menu is huge and filled with wonderful-looking options. The chips seemed fresh-made, and were served with fresh, flavorful red and green salsas. (The salsas weren't chunky or particularly spicy, if that's what you're used to, but they were ridiculously flavorful.) Everything that we tried was full of flavor and seemed wonderfully fresh. The servings are large and filling, but not overly so. The entree prices are good and ranged widely, with most plates between $12 and $20. The staff is warm, friendly, and efficient. I don't usually think of "pacing" for meals except when I get to go to a fancy restaurant and expect/hope that pacing will be a flawless part of the experience, but the staff's pacing here was outstanding, from the greeting through when we left. The restaurant is filled with lively, colorful decor, but stays just under the line, to me, of going overboard. There is a lot of seating inside (two dining rooms) and outside (a smallish fenced area). Definitely make the walk just past the main areas of downtown to get to El Agave. It's a block past the train tracks from the main area of downtown; diagonally across the street from Rita's. The decor is half traditional Mexican style and half modern led lights on everything style. It is a perfect date night spot. The food was so good that even my grandma who didn't even know what she was ordering loved it! I got the birria burrito and it was excellent. The burrito was stuffed to the brim and definitely worth the price. We also got chips and guac for the table which were high quality. It was a lovely day so we sat outside and it was very pleasant. This is the spot! For appetizers we have the Mexican nachos with chicken and the Agave platter. Both were great! No picture here because they were basically finished by the time I took out my camera.
