Being from Phoenix, we are tough customers for any Eastern Mexican food restaurant, but a photo of a full sized chimichonga caught our eye, and we thought this might rise above the pack. It certainly did. Our server was uncommonly pleasant, and the chimichonga did not disappoint. My enchilada and quesadilla covered with green salsa was a treat, The rice was uncommonly good - my wife usually skips that, but not this time. Just finished dinner here. The interior has a Mexican theme from wall paintings and table. Our server was outstanding and attentive for a crowded restaurant. The food is so fresh and delicious and we obsessively ate their chips and salsa, tacos, and fajitas! We also enjoyed a sangria flavored soda which really hit the spot on a warm day. The outdoor space is in the back and you are greeted by a cute entryway into the fully tented space. The wait staff is on the ball and the food comes out fast! Downtown Matawan is also a cute area to walk around, but there are a lot of vehicles in the area due to the train station. I have been coming for over 15 years and will be celebrating my birthday here this coming weekend, for at least the third time I've done so. Everyone is friendly, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is cute and the food is perfect. The secret ingredient to their success is their multiple sauces, which are aromatic and made to suit a wide range of taste buds. I happen to love the hot chipotle and chipotle cream sauce - but they aren't for the faint of heart. If you can't take things too spicy, ask for the delicious green aguacate or mole sauces. You can't go wrong with any choice. Their chicken is always cooked well, their seafood tastes fresh and the chili relleno is absolutely sublime. I have never had a better one. Their chips and salsa are the best you'll ever have in this area, too. Extremely fresh, made right on premises. The only possible criticism I could make is that the guacamole is a bit overpriced for the quantity they give - but it's always smooth and perfect. This place is such a great hidden gem! It's located right next to the Matawan train station. Good food, good service, and BYOB- what more could you ask for? ALSO, not many people know this but they have a party room connected to the restaurant. It's huge! My friend had her bridal shower here and they were so accommodating and went above & beyond. Everything was delicious and they even brought out to-go containers for guests to take leftovers. They let us come in the night before and setup. I wish yelp would let you give half stars. Aby's is definitely 4.5 worthy. The half star is for the sometimes grumpy service. We've been coming here for years now so you'd think they'd recognize frequent customers. Ok complaining aside.. Nicely appointed Mexican decor when you walk into this place. Nothing fancy but a step up from a hole in the wall. Good variety of food! Decent vegetarian options. Only gripe is they don't make Mexican rice vegetarian friendly as it's made in chicken broth. But the rice is truly delish for all the non-veg eaters out there. Best part of this restaurant for me is the variety of sauces. Our favorites are: Creamy chipotle Creamy jalapeño Arbol (spice level varies each time since they make it fresh and you never know how spicy a pepper may end up being) Each sauce will change up how a particular entree tastes so have fun with it and change it up every once in a while! My wife and I decided to spend our Cinco de Mayo here. We recently moved nearby and were looking for authentic Mexican cuisine. I believe what we found is a gem and a restaurant we both look forward to coming back to! I had the burrito with steak combined with one of their chicken floutas. Let's start with the burrito. Their medium (verde) sauce on top of it was great. It had a very flavorful taste along with the steak. Sometimes the steak in burritos can be soggy or too fatty but these medallions were perfection. They had a rich flavor and although not the most tender meat, their consistency matched well with the cheese and flour tortilla. It was quite enjoyable - I took my sweet time eating it. Onto the flouta - I've never had one before. It's basically a taquito but packed with more meat and covered in a good amount of veggies and sauces. I honestly can't remember the exact ingredients but it tasted very fresh. I wouldn't say it's good enough to stand alone, certainly glad I combined it with th burrito. The rice and beans were good too. I was a little surprised that the beans were refried beans but that was perfectly ok. It's a BYOB place but we didn't drink. Just enjoyed a couple root beers. The atmosphere was quaint and they had live entertainment. There was both a male and female singer, both very good and dressed in traditional Mexican outfits. Service was good too and prices were awesome. Anyone who says this place is expensive is cheap. While some Mexican food is cheaper elsewhere, it's hard to find a dinner entree like I did for $17. The Chimmi was big and full. if I could suggest to the chef: loose thr spinach. it adds no flavor and is visually off-putting. I would also swap the green bell peppers with poblanos to give more of an earthy/smoky flavor, and add some jalapeños for a little heat. otherwise well done! read more

She said it doesen't come with it, but if you like I can bring you a small plate with it. It was brought out to us on a desert size plate. Long time customer. It is all about the sauce choices, there are many and all of them are perfectly consistent through the years. I think this elevates Aby's because you can match your mood with a sauce, but some traditionalists may not agree. I especially love their mole. I don't like super hot so the Arbol is a no go for me. Because of its convenient location by the train station, and because I keep being optimistic about it improving for some reason, I've dined here once and gotten take-out 4 times. Each time I'm so disappointed. It's not that Aby's is bad. It just isn't GOOD. You would think that you would be able to get a better meal at a more authentic Mexican restaurant, but honestly Chile's makes a better fajita (the last one I ordered came only with chicken, peppers, onions and salsa -- no lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, pico de gallo or guacamole, so it was very unsatisfying). Aby's hasn't figured out how to make the take-out not get soggy -- and maybe that can't be avoided -- but at least don't cheap out on the offering if the flavor profile is just meh. I've also had the taco salad which was ehh because the chicken is just okay. Additionally the rice and beans was alright I guess. The beans were good, but the rice had a weird flavor and texture that left something to be desired. Anyway, I'll probably get food from here again - but I'm not really sure why, and probably not for a while. The price isn't bad though and the staff's pretty friendly. read more

First time here and I had high expectations considering a co-worker suggested this restaurant. I went with a safe dish, which were the chicken soft tortilla tacos. The taco did have a lot of chicken, which is great but the taco all together was flavorless. I had to add salt, pepper and some mild salsa for my preference. Also, I was craving a fresh juice, such as tamarindo or Jamaica but it turns out they don't drinks other than soda and water. The "queso" was a chunk of shredded cheese and spinach that congealed to the dish and wasnt dippable at all. My chimichanga was totally soggy from swimming in the bland jalapeño crema and seemed to have more roasted vegetables than $20 worth of seafood. The burrito was just okay. Our food order came out very fast! The chile relleno was packed with dense cheese and tasted good. The pork enchiladas had a good flavor, though the pieces of pork were a bit tougher than I'd like them to be. Next time I will try a different protein. The arbol sauce that topped the meal was actually quite good and had significant heat. Entrees came with rice and refried beans that were both average. I feel the main downside to this place is the cost. The cheapest thing on the dinner menu is a burrito, and a couple of other items, at $15. Went here on a recommendation of a lot of people in matawan, we always hear good things about here. We went the day after christmas for lunch and there was only 1 table occupied when we walked in. The food was good, at least what I had was. But the service was HORRIBLE. Carlos our waiter was rude and his attitude seemed like he was annoyed to be having to serve us. He didnt even introduce himself I had to check the receipt for his name. I dont require an overly enthusiastic server but being treated like a burden wasn't acceptable especially when we were didn't ask for anything other than our entrees and drinks.
