We always pass Sofia Taqueria when coming on and off the GSW but have never taken the time to go here. My husband and I finally came out on a Sunday at around 12:30 PM. The place is just as colorful and decorative inside as it is on the outside. They have different specials everyday and during the weekend they offer brunch specials along with bottomless mimosas. On Mondays they have buy 1 get 1 free margaritas. Happy Hour Monday-Thursday and other specials on all the other weekdays. My husband and I got some cocktails, guacamole, I got the chicken fajitas, and my husband got the birria tacos. I loved my espresso martini as it had a chocolate hint too it which I feel many places don't do anymore. My husband got the peach and mango belinni where the mango flavor was stronger than the peach which I loved because I am a mango fan. My husband wished his taco shells for the birria were a bit harder/crunchier but other than that he loved the flavor. I loved my chicken fajiatas as the chicken was still very tender. We walked in on a Saturday at 5:30. The hostess wasn't pleased that we didn't have a reservation. Looking around at the numerous tables to choose from, we were seated anyway. There were 6 of us. The waiter gave us a small basket of chips. I asked if it was possible for another basket. He reluctantly said yes but never brought them. We asked another person and they didn't bring them either. My son wanted a steak quesadilla. The waiter said that the steak in the quesadilla was chili rubbed and the only way to have it plain was to get the up-charged $10 steak. That's absurd! My 3 year old would definitely not want a chili rubbed steak. I ordered chicken quesadillas instead. They were just ok. Nothing special. They didn't come with anything so I ordered rice and beans. The food is good don't get me wrong but it's nothing that much better than other similar options except they charge way more and give way less. Tonight we got the duo steak and chicken fajitas and it was a few pieces of meat layered over a ton of peppers and onions. It came with four tiny tortillas. Not enough. No side. No rice. Nothing. $32. We've also gotten quesedillas in the past and they're not worth the high cost. I do like this place. I'm glad it's in the neighborhood but they need to up their portions and also bring the cheese empanada back. :) read more

We had a great dinner last night. We started off with amazing drinks, frozen margaritas that were exceptional. Fresh homemade chips with fresh, homemade salsa. We ordered a side of Sofia's secret guacamole that was outstanding. My friend and I both had shrimp tacos enough for 2 people. We ordered side dishes of rice and beans that was so flavorful and tasty. My husband and friend ordered shrimp ajillo and beef fajitas that came with Yukon. Diced potatoes. So much food servings that we all took food home. But there is always room for dessert. We ordered warm apple pie chimichanga and chocolate bread pudding. Both were topped with vanilla ice cream My friends birthday was coming up S was mine. The waiter came and sang to us in Spanish, Happy Birthday and put sombreros on our heads. It was so much fun. We have a lot of good Mexican food in NJ, especially from the town I am from. I've been wanting to try this place since they opened. I finally got there today. I love the restaurant itself. I love all the colors, the ambiance, the music! My husband started with the Mexican Mule and I got the Virgin Strawberry-Mint Mojito. The drinks were delicious! I also loved all the variety of drinks. They had so many options. For an appetizer, we started with the 'Strawberry and Cucumber Guacamole' and the 'Bay Street Corn'. I never heard of a strawberry and cucumber guacamole so i had to try it. The cucumber was very present. However, both appetizers had one thing in common: Lack of Flavor. They just needed some spice, or just something. It was very dull. I've had a lot of Mexican corn in my life and this would really far down on my list. For our entrees, my husband got the 'Blackened Shrimp' burrito and I got the 'Shrimp and Chorizo quesadilla'. My husband said his dish was okay. I did not try it so there's no opinion there but mine, again, lack of flavor. Chorizo should have gave it some kind of kick but there was no kick unfortunately which is crazy because Mexican food is normally SO flavorful. The service was good. Our server was nice, and quick. The rest of the wait staff was always cleaning, clearing tables, doing a good job but I cannot get over the lack of flavor. Would I be back or recommend? Came here one Saturday afternoon with the family. Place wasn't busy. We ordered some tacos and quesadillas and few appetizers. Food was decent and the place was clean. My kids and I don't drink alcohol so we ordered some sodas. What we didn't realized when the bill came was the refills were not included. I was under the assumption that the refills were included as the waitress came back each time asking if we wanted a refill. When asked about it, she said sorry refills are not free. We follow how our location in Staten Island conducts business. We were not thrill and I think she saw it in my face so she went to talk to the manager and I took off a few refills. Came here with a group of friends, location has plenty of parking. Walked in here and felt like we were back in Mexico. What a wonderful ambiance! Our waiter was Brian, and he was excellent as well as the busing staff. We started with all different flavors of margarita. Each of them were just as good. When my parents asked to have dinner with my wife and I the other night, she suggested "the loud and fun Mexican restaurant". I think that gives you enough context to know all you need to know about the vibe of Sofia's. After coming to this establishment a handful of times, I can safely say that everything on the menu ranges from pretty good to mouthwateringly excellent. I am pretty sure no one has ever complained about their meal after a dinner at Sofia's. Of particular note, the drinks are strong and flavorful, the queso is truly how every queso should be, and their Skirt Steak is a MUST; flavorful, divine and certainly worth the $5 upcharge. If the special of the night is their Surf and Turf, don't think any harder other than saying "yes queen" and ordering it for yourself. I promise you that you won't go wrong. Last time, I tried to get a Saturday night reservation at this place on the Wednesday before and I got shut out. So this year, I tried ten days prior and it worked. So if you want to try this place, plan well in advance and make a reservation. I went with a Blackened Chicken Burrito and nibbled on chips and salsa while my party and I waited on the arrival of the entrees. The chips are the multicolored variety. Decent crispiness but had little to no salt. The salsa is very chunky and had great flavor but there was no "heat" whatsoever. So we were off to a pretty poor start. That all changed when the entrees came. Everyone in my group raved about their meals. My burrito had rice, beans, guacamole and an abundance of the tastiest, juiciest chicken you ever ate. Highly recommend! The staff was great ---especially our waiter, CJ, who checked on us a few times. It was clear to us that this fellow was trying really hard which is always appreciated. This place is pretty solid for Mexican food in this area. I would easily classify it as outstanding if they would add salt to the chips and heat to the salsa. Overall Rating: B+ read more

The gorgeous colors and art do not stop at the eye catching building of Sofia's. The decor continues to impress everywhere you go inside. There are many photo ops to be had! They have a large dining area with small tables and large tables to accommodate different party sizes. We went with a large group. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. There was one issue where someone ordered a burrito bowl but got the burrito version, but she was ok with eatting the burrito and did not complain. Here's the rundown on the food: the complimentary salsa left something to be desired for me. It tasted like a slightly seasoned can of diced tomatoes to me. It's complimentary so not a big deal but competitors definitely have the leg up on salsa! We got nachos, street corn and Sofia's secret guacamole for appetizers. Each was tasty, especially the nachos which really were loaded with goodness. For my entree I got the steak plate, the steak was perfectly tender, just the right amount of chimichurri on top, below was a delicious chorizo hash which made for an exciting and unique combination. On the side, rice and beans. I really enjoyed my entree but couldn't help but notice the tacos and burritos do not come with sides. Luckily everyone was quite full from the appetizers, and it was Tuesday so for every 2 people who ordered tacos we got a free appetizer! Without that deal though, the prices on some things seemed a bit up there compared to other places and considering the ingredients. We finally made it here! It's always packed, so we never seemed to get in. It was worth the wait. Ernesto, our waiter was spectacular. Came back after every dish was served to make sure we were good. Kept our water glasses full. The flavors of each dish were really fantastic. The chili pineapple marinated steak Chimichanga was tender and so full of flavor. It wasn't too spicy or blah. It was seasoned perfectly. The Cadillac Margarita was tasty and not watered down, and the presentation was pretty. The fried ice cream was warm and crunchy outside, and icy cold ice cream inside, served in a little burrito bowl with sliced strawberries with whipped cream, was so delicious and adorable. I topped it off with a Mexican coffee, which was served in a wine glass, warm with a lit cinnamon stick, so aromatic and awesome. All the flavors were fresh. The food came quickly. I would say order your appetizer and wait a few minutes to order your meal. Which reminds me they served a dish of salsa and chips as soon as we sat down, but we also ordered Sophia's Secret Guacamole, which was creamy and mildly flavored which was ideal because you could taste the fresh avocado. We celebrated my birthday tonight at Sofias and had such a great experience, thanks to our waiter Louis. From the moment we sat down he was attentive, friendly, and incredibly professional. He made sure everything was perfect throughout the entire meal without ever making us feel rushed. Louis went above and beyond to make the night feel special. He checked in at the right times, made great recommendations, and his positive energy really added to the whole atmosphere of the evening. This little Taqueria serves up some average eats with a hefty price punch in a cute, decorated, space. Definitely no where near Rosa Mexicano quality or ambiance and yet their prices are same as NYC if not more in Old Bridge, NJ. When we arrived we were greeted right away by several staff members. Everyone seems so willing to help and interacts as a team and the consumer feels that. There were several birthday's we witnessed so it was very lively. Couple of things that could've went better: After we sat for about 10 minutes we asked for someone to take our order. Very apologetically someone took our order right away (not our waitress) but then everyone was very helpful. The lemonade was wayyy too sweet like a concentrate. I used the water we were served to dilute it so I made about 3 lemonades from 1 drink. So if you order 1 you can definitely split it- no problem to save $5.00 a glass. The lemons/limes they served were all dried out and when you squeezed it either in the taco or your drink not a drop of juice. We skipped the guacamole as it was $13-15 for just that. We ordered an empanada at $12 as an app and it was okay but not authentic (no peas or vegetable hash) just some good seasoned beef and potatoes. My husband ordered the Chimichanga ($21) and he said it was okay but not delicious. My Berria tacos ($23) fell a little short in the freshness category. The short rib was prepared well but and I had one radish on top but I wanted some fresh cilantro, queso fresco, maybe some fresh onions chopped up. The flavor was good and the sauce was good. Just left me wanting something more. This place was starting to pick up for a Monday night as we left around 6:30pm so I can imagine it does well. We spent just shy of $100.00 for the two of us without a real appetizer or alcohol. Atmosphere was great, employees were very hands on coming over (too) often to check in. I believe the manager made a round as well. The food was delicious but I honestly don't feel the need to return. It's conflicting. We have lived in this area for a year now and I would guess that this is the best authentic tacos in the area, but I'd rather drive farther and go to my old place. Sofias is very very very salty. The chicken empanadas had a depth of flavor to them, but everything else was just salt. The carnitas tacos were very tender, very generous portions, I have no complaints about any part of our meal. I just don't want it again, which is a bummer bc the place is a fun vibe for a date night / night out. My favorite part was the cocktails for sure. Vibrant location, typical Mexican colors and decor, which makes it a very fun and happy atmosphere. Hostesses were very sweet and welcoming. Our server Brandon was very accommodating and took care of every request we made. Food was on point; initially, we thought the serving of chips was a little small, but actually, it was just enough. After ordering the fajitas with double steak, we were actually satisfied. We also had the horchata flan, while different than the traditional flan, it was still delicious. Definitely will return; with their various locations around the area, we will visit their original location in Bay Street, SI. First time here. Glad we looked past some of the Yelp reviews. Definitely can tell it used to be a diner of some sort but the update is very trendy and cool. We got the guac which was okay, but the steak tacos and steak fajita was awesome. Went on a Monday so the margaritas were buy one get one free which was awesome. Got the churro for dessert which was good, but I think the chocolate sauce would taste better warmed. The bathroom could use a little update. The toilet seat was cracked and they should definitely put hooks behind the door in the ladies room. Also a garbage by the paper towel dispenser. Otherwise very pleasantly surprised, would come back. Also forgot to mention that both times I've been here I'm crossing over traffic which is dangerous and entering the exit. It's hard not to spot Sofia's when driving down Rt 9. I've had this place on my list for a while now, so when my husband said he was craving tacos, this was just the place. Aside from the complimentary chips and fresh salsa, we ordered the chicken AND beef empanadas. The seasoning in both the fillings was so good and flavorful! Each order comes with 2 good-sized empanadas which is great to share for an appetizer. I ordered the Birria Tacos and my husband, the Blackened Chicken Quesadilla and Bay Street Corn. The Birria Tacos.... Chef's kiss. Three large tacos filled with the most tender short rib with your own little pot of consommé... these are not spicy at all which is great for my husband who doesn't do well with any spice. The only thing I would change about the dish is the platter it comes on. It was a little small for everything that comes with it so it was a little tricky trying to eat over it. They bring a little selection of hot sauces with your food except for me, they weren't hot enough. Our server hooked me up with some hotter sauces and it was just what I needed. My husband really liked his chicken quesadilla but he liked my Birria tacos more lol. Next we tried 3 different ordered of tacos carnitas, alpastor and steak. All of them were served luke warm at most with steak and al pastor being WAY to sweet like they added sugar. Also ordered the fajitas which was nice hot served on hot plate but no flavor to the meat. Overall, if you're looking for authentic this place is not the place. Ok this place is very far from a 'Chipotle with Table Service' honestly if you're in a bad mood I wouldn't come here - it's a taqueria and all of the best ones I've been to are buzzing with loud music, talking, colorful walls, friendly staff etc. It's meant to be a place to come and kick back and relax. The food is FAR better than Chipotle - I thought it was authentic and way better than like FC Tacos and Cantina for example. The Secret Sofia's guac was actually bigger than I expected after reading the review that it's small. It has a lot of tomato chunks in it and was served chilled and fresh - was so delicious. Our table ordered all of the quesadillas as apps - I liked the steak the best and then the shrimp chorizo, then the chicken. I would pass on veggie and the chicken was more pulled chicken than blackened. I also liked the sauces that came with them. My sister and I split the birria tacos and shrimp - the birria were so so good - with the two sauces they provide on the side. Shrimp were ok! I love that they have three homemade hot sauces (just have to ask for them). The jalapeño cucumbers margs were strong and refreshing - also was buy one get one free on Monday! We had the cookie tres leches cake and the flan - OMG you MUST ORDER! Was to die for. Our waiter was very chill and attentive. The place is huge (being a renovated diner) and they have a ton of staff. I found the staff was always there to take away finished plates, deliver more drinks etc. The inside and outside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated with bright colorful paintings and tiles. I also liked the chandeliers in the dining area we were in and the huge 'I tequila' sign - great for photos. There were a number of birthdays and they do change the music to an upbeat authentic birthday song as their staff sings to the table and one person spins a large ceramic rooster. It's fun both to watch and clap/ celebrate!!! Since it is busy I recommend making a reservation. They do have like a sketchier looking back parking area - but it really isn't that far from the restaurant and it's worth parking there to come. I forgot to mention they even have a cute little bar area! Overall staff was super nice, had a really fun time and really enjoyed the food and drinks - excited to come back. My husband and I tried this place last night after driving past it many times and admiring how beautiful they had transformed it from the diner it formally was.....after our experience all we could think about is how much we missed the diner. Decor is something they definitely have down but sadly that is where it ended. The place is definitely beautiful inside and out. Staff was very nice upon welcoming. Upon sitting down we were greeted immediately. Service was great from beginning to end. They start you off with a small bowl of chips -- perhaps 10 chips at most. Sodas are not free refills and glasses are small as well. We tried Sofias "secret" guacamole. It was $13 and they did not give us any chips with it. Nothing elevated about this guacamole. Whats the secret -- that they added sour cream to it? Not worth $13. We had to ask for chips-- and again another small bowl of chips. Forgot to mention they do give you a tiny dish of salsa obviously store bought. Chips as well. We then ordered the chicken tortilla soup. Take out the tortillas and it was a bland chicken soup with wayyyy too large chunks of carrots devoid of cheese and taste -- served lukewarm at best. Hubby ordered steak fajitas and I ordered the chicken enchiladas. Presentations of all food were mediocre -- and not one item was served hot. Chicken in the enchiladas had minimal flavor-- tasted like rotisserie chicken from BJS. We immediately decided to take the food home to our dogs. For dessert we shared fried ice cream which was the only item we finished and enjoyed. Our bill without tip was $125. This place was a one and done for us. We will not be returning. Came here for a lunch/ dinner with my husband .. Grandma kept the kids so we were just casual hanging on a rainy day .. We are originally from Staten Island so we are obsessed with all Sofias locations on Staten Island but we now live in NJ and were running errands and wanted something good so we said let's try what we know but different location.. We were sat in a booth by the window and they welcomed us with chips and salsa .. We orders chips and guacamole and always good .. I started with a coconut margarita bulldog that gave me an nice little buzz and my husband ordered a ginger ale and tequila he enjoyed it .. My main meal I ordered carne asada tacos but upgraded to the skirt steak which is always so freakin good my husband ordered the fajitas that were super generous !!! I'm local to this spot and finally was able to check it out for a girls night out with a friend. We wanted to stay local and enjoy some drinks and apps. Let me preface this review with, I never mind paying for good food and service but you will find instances where one or both can be compromised. They first serve you chips and salsa upon sitting down and the chips shoulda already foretold how the food was going to be the rest of the evening. The chips were very stale even after the new serving we asked for. Come the apps and the food was just ok. A bit bland for my taste, definitely needs more flavor. As we continued our evening, to catch up and such, we stayed at the restaurant for hours. The service was amazing as they did check up on us throughout without being annoying or neglectful. After 2 rounds of drinks, we also ordered dessert, which we opted for their 3 dessert flight. It was good but nothing amazing. So... to conclude this review everything was average up to this point which we were ok with. At least we tried it , supported the business, and now we can say we went. The bill came and we were a bit sticker shocked, considering we didn't even have full meals lol. For 2 people, 4 orders of cocktails, and 4 apps (+a bowl of soup) ... tell me why we both paid close to $100 EACH?!? I wouldn't mind paying this if the food was great and I left fulfilled but sadly we weren't. If you're feeling for Tex Mex, drive a bit further up north to a Woodbridge and pay half the price. Sorry but that was the first and last time I'll be going there. P.S. I'm giving a 3 star because their service was for sure great and ambiance is instagrammable. read more

Went for lunch..they didnt disappoint. We were greeted by a friendly staff, it was decorated beautifully. I felt like we walked into a restaurant in mexico. The food was all really good and the drinks were amazing! read more

I feel this will be 2 different reviews. First, the service was great in the beginning. Wings were perfect, Chicken Enchilada was perfect, Margaritas were good...But then, I assume a manager sat at the bar with a laptop & made the bartender do inventory. This was at 5:00 pm. All the good service just vanished, couldn't get any more drinks or the bill. Don't know what this was about but it was enough to go from 5***** to 3 & no desire to go back.
