Went to the restaurant because of the high Yelp score, but was quite disappointed by the overall experience. Pricing is structured in a way that you are nickel and dimed for every aspect of the meal, from having to pay for water bottles (because tap water isn't made available), to cheese and sour cream. I didn't find the kitchen very accommodating (not even having a salad dressing for their avocado salad), and had to go back and forth with our waitress to convince the kitchen to make guacamole without jalapeños. The execution of the food was decent and the decor was lovely, but given that we were the only folks in the restaurant for some time, this is NOT a restaurant I'd recommend for folks looking for a great lunch in the area. read more

Celebrated Cinco de Mayo here & the line to get in was enormous but drinking while you wait outside is the norm so waiting wasn't a huge deal, it was actually fun. My party of 10 was seated in the backyard of the restaurant where there was Cinco de Mayo entertainment. The dancers & entertainers were amazing! They interacted with the patrons & gave us a good laugh. The food was great. My party of 10 all ordered different things: I ordered the tacos carnitas, my husband ordered the chimichanga, my daughter ordered the birria tacos, someone else ordered tacos dorados & I can't remember the rest. Everyone raved about the dishes. We also ordered both desserts: flan & tres leches cake. Both were unbelievable! So good. We took all leftovers home & I had it with coffee for breakfast. Overall my party was so happy to celebrate the holiday here. We had a great time. Staff was amazing & so was the food. It's BYOB so bring the beers wine & other favorites. Maybe an off night. Selected this restaurant our first night in Lake Como/Belmar. First ding was no traditional salsa, they provided both a red and green sauce with the chips. The chips were not warm nor very tasty. My son wanted tacos, and prefers ground beef. As GB wasn't on menu, he tried chorizo. Also ordered a side of rice. I had mushroom quesadilla, which came with rice and black beans. I'm accustomed to two large tortillas faith fillings in the middle, then grilled and sliced. These came out in three small tortillas folded over and grilled. Still tasted good. The rice was mushy and looked more like fried rice. Service was prompt (no one else was in the restaurant) but I had to get up to find someone to bring the bill. Would still recommend but be prepared for not a typical Mexican restaurant experience. read more

i have never been so impressed by a birria taco in the jersey shore before. the service was quick and the music was the perfect little jig to eat my food to. $35 for chips, tacos, and a quesadilla??? say less have my children. read more

Best place for an excellent Mexican meal! Super authentic and the atmosphere is amazing as well as the friendly service. They have outdoor seating in the front or back of the restaurant. This is the Mexican Restaurant you should consider! My girlfriend and I were in the mood for Mexican food. We noticed there were quite a few authentic restaurants in the Belmar area, which quite frankly, made it difficult to pick just which one to go to. However, we trusted the very positive reviews posted on Google and decided to try El Rey. Making reservations online was very easy and although we had one for 4:45pm, we arrived a half hour earlier and had no issues being seated. Being that it was still early, the restaurant was mostly empty and we were able to pick a table of our choice. The restaurant was clean, wonderfully decorated and very quaint. Once we picked our table, we sat and took notice of the gorgeous chairs that were adorned with beautiful artwork. The young lady who served us was just wonderful. Wish I had taken note of her name. She was very friendly and quite patient as I mispronounced the name of the dish I was ordering. I went with beef Alambres while my girlfriend picked chicken nachos. We were not prepared for what came next... HUGE plates filled with food. The portions were immense. The plate of nachos was a huge, heaping mountain of food -- enough for more than two people. We loved it! The beef Alambres arrived on a sizzling plate with a large portion of rice and beans along with warm flour tortillas. I'm a guy with a huge appetite and it was an effort for me to finish it all (but I did!). As we finished our meal, the owner came over to our table to ask how we were doing. We came to find that this was his second eatery -- the original being in Asbury Park. We were so happy to find a privately owned restaurant like this with great food and friendly, excellent service that was thriving like this. The final eye-opener came when the bill arrived. For two people eating a massive amount of food with accompanying bottles of soda, it came to about $25 a person, including tip. That's pretty amazing in times like these when going out to eat has become generally unaffordable. As we walked out of El Rey, my girlfriend and I discussed what a great meal and experience we just had. I think the words, "This is our new favorite restaurant" was uttered. We will absolutely return as there are so many choices on the menu that we did not have the opportunity to try. So, if you are faced with having to pick the right Mexican eatery, I can confidently recommend El Rey. The food, service and ambience is superb. I saw that this New Mexican place just opened in town. So we decided order take out and give them a try. We got the chicken tostada, tacos campechos, and quesabirria tacos. Everything was fresh and delicious. Authentic Mexican food. Their green and red salsa were both really good with a hint of spicy. It's all reasonably priced.
