First off, my wife and I ate dinner here back in December on a whim. We were driving back to Harrisburg, PA after spending the day in DC. Now I forgot the name for the last 4 MONTHS. I just now remembered the name. This place has been on my mind since then. That's the kind of impression that Surf House made. My wife had a salmon salad and I had loaded nachos. The food was soooooooo good! The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was really awesome. Bottom Line: Terrible Service overshadowed OK food. Staff appeared more interested in working the bar than tending to other patrons. Hired a babysitter and went to Surf House for date night on a Thursday. Arrived around 700; bar was full and well tended. Three empty tables--we were told a 25 min wait. The waiting area is directly behind the podium which was barely staffed. A family of 3 came in five minutes later, they were told 35 minutes. Three guys after that were told 45 minutes--still 3 empty tables, all left. Finally another couple came in and were told 10 minutes, then we were seated. Waters were brought quickly but that was the end of the efficiency. We ordered nachos right away, took more than 20 minutes to arrive. Generous portion but half-hearted execution, unmelted cheese and lukewarm protein did not make a good impression. They had at least four people working the kitchen. Entrees came about 10 minutes later. I had the steak/chicken burrito, wife had fish tacos. Both were hot and ok, not really worth a 50 minute wait. So, it's been 5 years since my first review. Since then, Surf House has become one of our go-to restaurants. Carry-out from here was one of the bright spots of Covid. Food was always fresh, hot, and delicious. My favorite is the salmon taco platter...or maybe the grilled chicken sandwich...it's hard to choose. My husband likes the Tsunami Nachos. Have been here twice, great dining experience! You feel happy as you walk through the door. Great beach colors, theme and the food was as fresh as the appearance. Our server Sam was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The menu on Yelp needs to be updated as it apparently had recently changed somewhat. I would highly recommend the Citrus Ceviche as one of your starters. Fish was fresh and it leaves a clean taste. You'll want to drink the marinade! The Castaway Calamari was some of the best Calamari I've ever had. Tender, not overcooked and the wasabi aioli drizzle along with the sweet Thai chili dipping sauce are an excellent accompaniment. I had the two crab cakes my first visit. Real crab, no filler, excellent! This last trip I had the Bouillabaisse and you would have thought you were at some classic French restaurant. Absolutely delicious! If I had one comment, I would say that on the second visit, some of the dishes were just slightly overseasoned, especial the Lobster Risotto. I've been to Surf House several times since they first opened. I've always been happy by the quality of the food, freshness of ingredients, and consistent execution of their recipes. Service is more often than not at or above expectation, and the craft beer list would please most beer nerds, myself included. The atmosphere with it's surf theme definitely provides those beach feels you don't otherwise get while on this side of Maryland, which is a welcome idea for the area. The menu has evolved since they first opened, which I find pros and cons with, but mostly the menu has matured, and makes more sense now. The reason I can't give that final 5th star is due to the higher prices and less than large serving sizes. I tend to always leave while still hungry, despite spending a pretty penny. Add to that a pricey kids menu ($7 quesadilla and side?) and you can leave Surf House with a weird feeling of disappointed satisfaction. And you might need a snack. read more

The food was good but the service was very slow. We actually almost walked out because every step took a very long time. I ordered chips, salsa and guacamole for $12.95. The chip bowl wasn't full so I asked for some more chips to go with the salsa and guacamole. The waiter brought a very small bowl of extra chips and then charged me $2 extra bucks! Surf House has it all: Great food, a fun atmosphere, and excellent service. Oh, and a well curated beer list. They stick to the theme with colorful fish, surfboards, and of course excellent fish dishes. The rice bowls and tacos are flavorful and fresh. My husband loves the fat panda burrito. I personally believe you can never go wrong with guacamole as an appetizer, and this is doubly true at Surf House, but if you want to stick with seafood the calamari is delicious. Surf house is delicious!! I eat here probably at least 3-4 times a month, even more over the summer. Their burritos are delicious, the shark bait is my favorite. Great atmosphere over the summer with their outdoor seating, reggae jams, and great selection of beers. Definitely give this place a try you won't regret it. read more

We were coming back from our honeymoon in Washington DC, and saw the whole in the wall Resturant, and decided to try it out. First off I would just like too say, the atmosphere was amazing, it had a great beach look to it, the tv had a fake aquarium that was really cool. The food was amazing I had the loco moca burger which had Hawaiian rice, and a fried egg on the burger. My wife had kahuna burger which feature BBQ pulled pork with avocados, pineapple and mango. For the dessert I had the vanilla pudding it was amazing All are highly recommended. Now for the service I don't remember her name, because she wasn't at the table very often. Now we may have caught them on a bad day but we sat at the table for 15 mins before even being greated then we ordered it took almost an hour, the food was hot, and still good to eat, but our waitress disappeared, periodically. i would say it was a great place to eat, and if we are in the area again we will definitely go back. read more

We thought we found a new destination restaurant, but sadly not. Cute place, interesting menu but unfriendly management. Our waitress was friendly and had good suggestions from the menu. The mussels were delicious. The rest of the food was solid but not 45 minutes from home solid. The problem was the manager's attitude when I had a problem with the margarita he made. It was bitter, very biter. The waitress apologized and took it back. We could hear the manager's comment from across the bar. He then came out to "explain" to me that the margaritas are made the same way each time. My husband, son and I all agreed that his attitude was argumentative. I started to drink the replacement drink and then asked my husband to try it. It was very biter again. When we were leaving I asked to speak to the manager and tried to tell him what I felt about the drink and that I didn't appreciate his attitude. I told him his staff acted embarrassed while covering for the comments we could hear from across the bar. He then informed me that his staffed was not embarrassed by his apology to me but by my complaining. read more

Fantastic spot. Best restaurant in Urbana. We were seated quickly on a Saturday but it was early. (About 5 pm) Kids meal was generously portioned and arrived quickly. Blackened salmon tacos were delicious. Everything was very fresh and the portions were perfect. The wine list is great and the value for the 6 and 9 oz pours is very good. The ambience is very cool. Started with chips and pico. Took a long time to get them and was brought out from the kitchen staff (not our waitress). It's just chips and pico de gallo, not a prepared app or entree. The pico was a miss - needed more salt, garlic, more chilis, and lime. Had the mahi mahi tacos with very fresh side salad. Delicious and the ginger salad dressing was fantastic! Good selection of beers. For desert we tried the key lime pie -- it was very, very good! I would recommend giving the Surf House a try, but try a starter other than chips and pico. read more

We stopped here on our way from D.C. to PA on a Friday around 2. Our food was amazing. I had the Loco Moco burger which was mouthwatering. My husband got the Shark Bite Burrito which was sort of a dirty rice/shrimp burrito that needed some lime juice and hot sauce but was delicious. (We switched plates halfway and he was equally obsessed with the burger). We will be back should we pass through again! Also, adorable decor. This is starting to become a regular spot for my wife and l! Surf House is about as consistent as it gets for a summer(y) spot with no beaches in sight. Oddly it fits right into Urbana as is a must stop if the stomach is grumbling. If hungry don't even bother with the menu.. just ask for the "Fat Panda". You won't be disappointed. Other than that the shrimp tacos are to die for... couple a pile/side of sweet potato fries and close your eyes.. with all the surfing you can get on every TV and island music you may actually start to believe you are somewhere warmer and sandier. Places can change over time and the Surf House is no exception. I have been coming here once a month since they opened and can say they have deteriorated in service & quality & portion size but their beer selection has remained superior. When they first opened, i bragged to family & friends about the quality of service, including water servers, and large portions. Can a resturaunt offer reasonable prices with high quality food & service & large portions and still make a profit? Apparently not. They have scaled back considerably. They no longer offer automatic water service. In fact, water is only available on demand and they are not attentive to refills. The size of the portions have been noticably scaled back (my shark bait burito had 1 shrimp in it!). And the nice napkins have been replaced with cheap paper ones. What has remained steadfast is "the presentation" of the meal and the beer selection. I understand the economics of business and the need to make a profit, but c'mon! I gave the Surf House 5 stars when it first opened. However, what set the Surf House apart from the others no longer exists. I'm no longer going to pay a premium for just a good beer selection & a nice presentation. I can get that at a less expensive venue elsewhere. Bottom line: The Surf House is no longer a good value. read more

My family has been to Surf House several times now since their recent opening and we are never disappointed! We have tried several items from their G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Tme) Tacos and other varieties, Teriyaki wings, the Sunchild Salad, Lava Rice Bowls and more! We are always looking forward to our next visit to try something new! The ingredients are always extremely fresh and the dishes are seasoned to perfection! Not only is the food exceptional but the staff is too...very courteous and attentive. They also seem to be enjoying what they're doing and working with each other. The management at Surf House is top notch! With the excellent food AND management, it is no wonder why they seem to have A LOT of repeat customers.
