I feel like I was ripped-off by Surf City Optometry having paid $214 only to receive one pair of half-functional trial contacts (No prescription provided for glasses or contacts). I initially had an eye exam and contact lens fitting last year. Prior to scheduling my eye exam and fitting, I informed the staff as well as the eye doctor that I would be traveling out of state for a while to care for a family member and both confirmed that my contacts would arrive prior to my departure. Based on this assurance, I proceeded with getting my exam and contact lens fitting. My trial contacts did take a while to come in but that is understandable due to my astigmatism. The trial contacts came in a few days before my flight. The right contact was a perfect fit, however the left lens didn't sit correctly and would move around in my eye. This would cause the contact to become unfocused as well as cause irritation after a few hours of use. I stopped by Surf City Optometry for a follow up to have the left lens looked at but they did not have any available appointments. I again mentioned I would be out of the state for a while and was told it was not a problem, to just stop by when I returned. Upon returning to California, I stopped by last Saturday. They scheduled an appointment for me for a refitting later that day and was told there would be no cost for the refitting. Prior to my appointment, I received a call from another employee stating that they would actually have to charge me for ANOTHER eye exam and ANOTHER contact lens fitting as their rules require refittings to be done within 90 days of the original appointment. I explained what I mentioned above about being told by the staff it would not be a problem for the refitting when I returned. All I was asking for was to have the fitment corrected to finalize the prescription for the contact lens evaluation I had already paid for. They were sympathetic and understood my frustration about having paying for something that I didn't receive, but they told me that there was nothing they could do about it. To their credit, everyone I interacted with at Surf City Optometry was very polite and professional throughout every interaction. I don't feel like they did this intentionally, however I do feel misled by being encouraged to proceed with the exam and also being told it would not be a problem have a follow up fitting when I return. Had they informed me this could be an issue, I would have just had the exam and fitting out of state (where I would have paid 100% out of pocket). I'm disheartened that they would have a policy that's only purpose seems to be to make customers pay again after 90 days for the same service they already paid for. Additionally, I requested a copy of my prescription because it was not provided to me after the exam and I was told it would be emailed to me. I confirmed my email address, but it has been a couple weeks and they still have not provided the prescription for contacts or glasses. This is not reassuring because I found out that they are required by law to provide everyone with their prescription at the completion of the eye exam (regardless of if it was requested or not). All of this has broken my trust with Surf City Optometry and I will be looking for a new optometrist. I do still believe that the Surf City's positive reviews are accurate and that this happened to be an uncommon event. Had it not been for these issues, I probably would have rated them 4 stars. Less 1 star as I felt the cost was a rather high and the exam process felt ever-so-slightly rushed (in fairness, they seemed rather busy on my exam day so this may not be the usual experience). Eye doctors in general are not very transparent with their prices, so I have uploaded a scan of my bill to give people an idea of what they can expect to pay here out of pocket when using Anthem Vision Insurance. read more

I wanted to check my eyes to do new glasses for near vision, I knew Dr Johan Tran when he we working for previous optometry company. I told the dr I want to be able to work on close objects and on my computer and shelfs around my work station. He did for me a glasses which was too close and was not able to see my computer with it, came back to the place and he did for me another different measurement and I was able to see with it. 3 weeks after that my eyes started not to see very far objects with my old concave glasses and the one he did for me, the convex one started to allow me to see very far distances that it was not able to do before. So I got conclusion that my vision was in transitioning phase and the vision measurement the doctor did for me is not valid anymore. I described these things to the receptionist and told me you have to pay again for the doctor to see you. I told her I just got your measurements 2 months ago and you wasted like 2 weeks to have it created for me. She said ok let me ask the Dr and I will get back to you on Thursday and she never called back. This is very bad service by this place, also people should not pay every 2 months 140$ to get eye measurement, it is a rip off. I like the Dr there but I don't like this place treatment to me. I've been coming to Surf City Optometry for years. Their location is superb, always clean and spotless. The staff is always presentable, professional and friendly. When I was a teen My eyesight started to change, every year my eyes would get worst. What started with reading glasses, progressed to full time glass wear. I thought I was going to go blind. When I was in my late teens I started doing research on better optometrists in the area and that when I found Surf City Optometry. A few years in, I started seeing Dr. Dinh and I can say I am so glad to have met her. She's been able to help stabilize my eyes and has always strived to get me into the best contact lenses for my eyes. I recently stopped by for some eye irritation and dryness. I was seen by Dr. Toma and she is just as pleasant and professional. I highly recommend recommend coming to Surf City Optometry! Every doctor I've seen has been so knowledgeable and competent and taken the time to explain my test results and eye changes in a clear, understandable manner. I need to start this review by saying I only shopped here and did not purchase eyeglasses here. Three reasons I did not purchase here: 1. After going through all the cases with the associate--I could not find a frame that fit me well enough to purchase--you may find one that fits you though? The average frame prices were about $200 to $250 --standard for a private shop--and they have more expensive ones from Gucci and Cartier. 2. I asked the associate to price out my Rx with a $250 frame and the total came to about $1200.00. [Progressive Lenses with Transition.] That's really expensive for eyeglasses! I have to believe that they are using the highest quality materials at this pricing, but I just can't do it. It was way too much. 3. They don't personally make these lenses--they send them out to a lab that I was told can take up to 2 weeks. I ultimately found a place that had a frame that fit my face very well and had them make up a progressive transition lens for total cost of $325.00 back in 3 business days. Now I will tell you that while the handmade frame from Japan is excellent and fit me perfect with no adjustment or fitting at all required--the lenses are OK quality and not the same quality you would get in this shop for $800 more. You get what you pay for in lenses and there are different quality levels. I certainly won't steer you away from this shop--just go with a large budget in mind. read more

I went to this doctor in an emergency when my usual doctor was unavailable. I went to get a piece of metal taken out of my eye. They ended up drilling into my eye to get it out, which is typical. What is not typical, is the contact that they put in my eye as a "Band-Aid?" I expressed how uncomfortable I was putting another foreign object into my eye when I just had one removed, but they refused to let me leave until I put the contact in. I was uncomfortable the entire night and the next day I went to my usual Doctor Who then confirmed that that Had now given me an infection. in addition to the doctor, I saw here was incredibly rude to me as I was leaving giving me a hard time about the price which I was simply inquiring about because it cost me $370 for this when my usual doctor charges at most 150 needless to say I will never be going back here if I had more energy, I would be trying to get my money back from this doctor read more

Been a customer here over 10 yrs., but that stops today. Made an appointment to get my eyes checked and found that they were charging me $25 because I had to cancel my previous appointment. What? That is absolutely nuts. Got a late invite to an urgent Company meeting so I cancelled my optometry appt but they charged even though I contacted them, unfortunately it was not within the 24 time period. I called another office first, but I ended up coming to Surf City Optometry because of​ the woman that I spoke with to schedule the appointment. She was super friendly. The office itself is easy to find. When I stepped in, the women at the front desks greeted me right away. During the check-in process, they took my picture for security purposes (this was sort of random, but it didn't bother me). I got the first set of eye exams done quickly, and I didn't wait long for the optometrist. She was professional and walked me through what was going on with my prescription and eyes. Wow, just wow. They are awesome. There is one person JUST dedicated to disinfection. Another person who also does disinfection. They take your temp. Ask you the CDC questions. Appointments are required. Masks required. The doc was also wearing a face shield. There were a fair number of people in the office but never felt crowded. Excellent frame selection. Tom Ford, Tory Burch, RayBan, Costa, Maui Jim, TOMS. Did you know TOMS not only gives glasses for every frame you get but also funds eye surgeries? Excellent quality of care. They have all the latest in technology. Digital eye exam. Pictures of the back of the eye. They have it down! Easy peasy parking. In the same center as Hobby Lobby. I arrived 5 minutes early to my appointment and was asked to take a seat. 10 minutes later, some young guy that the receptionist obviously knew, came in and was immediately taken in for his appointment before me. 20 Minutes after my appointment time, the same employee who helped the late guy came to take me in for my appointment. When I asked him why the guy that came in after me went before me, he said that they take people in by their appointment time. Soooooooooo, some punk shows up 15 minutes late for his appointment after I show up 5 minutes early for my appointment, and they take him in first? I had to find a new eye doctor, I live in HB and looked up Surf City Opto. they where great and friendly. I got an appointment next day with my new Dr. Lauren Monsanto she did a great exam and gave me a new RX for glasses. 2 weeks later had new spec's and I can see better. I've been there several times and they can't seem to adjust them correctly. Came here twice. Staff was friendly and professional both times, but I find the services rendered and products recommended are very expensive and there was some significant miscommunication. We came here once w my infant as they are a participant for free vision screens for infants. Second time was a same day appointment as I was concerned that my toddler had an eye irritation or possibly infection that needed to be looked at. I appreciate that they had a same day appointment, but was provided false information when the office staff told me it would be $125 for a medical appointment and then told me that I could pay $135 total which would include a vision exam (as long as the medical exam did not take too long nor show anything severe). I was already hesitant after I heard the quoted price since we had no insurance coverage, but decided to take my toddler since vision is important and figured I could have two things done at the same time since my toddler had not gotten his vision checked in a while w some concerns. We arrived on time to our appointment, but then waited for 30 mins before finally seeing Dr. Hamada who only saw my toddler for less than 15 mins and told me there was no time for a vision exam and that it would typically be a separate appointment anyways, which was not what the office staff had told me over the phone. I was charged $125 for the 15 min medical appointment which was a simple vision exam w some eye drops. I think this place caters more towards older children and adults when I compare it to other pediatric based medical offices. Also from the 2 times Ive been there, I was recommended products that were marked up 25-50% above the prices online for the same products. read more

At my appointment every one I encountered was super friendly and efficient. They were very covid- 19 conscious with screening before entering the building and cleaning every machine immediately after use. The girl that helped me pick out my glasses was incredibly patient and helpful making my decision. She broke everything down for me cost wise with my insurance factored in which was very easy to understand. I was able to pick up my glasses earlier than I was originally quoted as well!
