If you're like me and you like trying new places for the love of discovering new delicious food spots, do your best to avoid this place. I was surprised to walk in and see no customers at 5pm but after dining here, it all makes sense. Service was absolutely horrible and prices made no sense. The "sauce" bar is embarrassingly dirty. The salad was old and brown. Same goes for the salty cucumber salad and kimchi. Kids 8 and over are charged full price. Fresh veggies are free with the $70 meal. We got the B package which equaled $120 for the three of us but had to pay $10 extra for the veggies. How does that make sense? B and C menu lacked anything premium(Wagyu, shrimp, mussels, scallops, crabs etc) so you're not getting anything worth paying the premium price for. The squid was clearly labeled 2x. So you can only get two orders of squid. Thats not per person, but per table. So if you came in alone you get 2 orders. If the three of us sat at three tables and paid separately, we would each get 2 orders. Again, makes no sense. Anyways we got our 2 orders of squid and then ordered the spicy squid, which is clearly marked as a separate item on the list that also says 2 orders. We were told all squid are 2 orders total. I showed her the menu that clearly states 2 orders for each item. She replied "No. It's expensive" and walked away to another table where the customers were Korean. Ugh, rude. Check came and there was a $5 charge for card. We told her we would pay cash and she circled the cash price. It was the same price. I tried to explain it to her and again she walked away. Finally got around to trying Surawon Korean BBQ and it definitely hit the spot. They offer a few different AYCE tiers depending on what meats you want to try -- we went with the $24 option, which still had a solid variety. We came here on a Friday night with friends after the place we originally planned to go to had a very long wait. This restaurant was nearby, so we decided to give it a try without high expectations since they offer both AYCE and individual orders. Surprisingly, it wasn't just the meat, but the vegetables. The owner grows the vegetables in their own garden, and they were incredibly fresh and delicious. Honestly, that alone deserves a 5/5. The doenjang jjigae was also excellent--rich and comforting. The service was very friendly, and they even packed up the leftover vegetables for us to take home, which was such a thoughtful touch. First, my friend and I arrived at 11 AM, the advertised open time. An older man was inside mopping and asked us to come back in 30 minutes. Normally I'd go somewhere else but I had time and good company to wait. We came back in at 11:33 and he said to wait another 5 minutes. After the long wait we were first to be seated but second to be waited on. A Korean couple came in after us, was waited on first, and greeted properly. The man that was mopping earlier comes to our table second and shortly asks what we wanted to order. Before we could finish ordering all 4 meats he walked away. He brought 2 servings, turned up the fire, and walks away again. We were not asked about drink orders or sides at this point. Finally a woman enters and we were able to get water and sides from her. When we asked for the rest of our order she pointed to a buffet table. We get up and see that there are some sides available, but they are not fresh. The broccoli section had a few crumbs left (see pic) and the salad was browning. Maybe this was from a day or two before?? We were the first ones there so there was no excuse for the dismal presentation. Oh, and let me also say that the radish was green and sour. The kimchi had a terrible smell and needed to be dumped. On top of this, we were the only ones told to get up and serve ourselves. By this time, 3 other tables were seated and all being served as is typical of a KBBQ spot. The meat we did receive (never got the full order) was bland. We weren't offered more water. The woman was happily chatting with the Korean patrons and we felt like an after thought. Went here on an evening weekday night and the place was absolutely empty. The side dishes were so overly sour, like they added way too much rice vinegar. We only ordered beef belly and brisket and both meats were the toughest meats I have ever had at a kbbq spot. The meats came out frozen and did not taste like good quality meat at all. Not a bad place to eat KBBQ but there are definitely better places to choose from in the immediate area. Perhaps the most alluring thing about this place was the prices. They are somewhat cheaper than other KBBQs and that is about it. We were seated very quickly since the restaurant was practically empty when we arrived. Though there were not many people there, the service was still quite slow. We had to continuously flag down anyone we could to have sides and meat brought to the table. Bear in mind, there are only three workers in this entire establishment, at least for the front of the house. The old korean couple, who I assume own the joint and a young server who seems overwhelmed much of the time. The place itself looked clean enough but according to my friends, the bathroom was a nightmare. I did not check it out myself but was a bit concerned, as I have always been under the impression that the kitchen is likely just as clean as the restrooms. The food was very average. The thing that I liked most was probably the beef belly but sadly, we ordered this towards the end so I did not get to have much of it. I was not the biggest fan of the brisket, no matter how long it was cooked, it always tasted very rubbery. I could not believe how we were treated going here. Our server was rude and would say remarks such as "you can wait" and "the others tip better". They dropped rice paper on our table and didn't pick it up, they used our own broccoli side dish to clean the grease from the meat grill. My party and I have never been treated worse at any place than here. I believe it was the daughter who has a pink headband that would say those remarks to us. She was so worried about a piece of paper as soon as I got in she told me not to touch it because of a health inspection they were expecting. COVID-19 QUARANTINE UPDATE: Ok so I'm 6 months pregnant and have been DYING for some kbbq... however, due to the COVID-19 outbreak and forced quarantine, all dine-in restaurants have been closed and most kbbq restaurants are dine-in only :((( THEN HERE COMES SURAWON TO THE RESCUE!!!! They recently posted a sign saying $9.99 for To-go KBBQ which I was ALL OVER. I called immediately to place a to-go order. Hubby and I ordered the 3 meat combo (short ribs, bulgogi, and brisket) for $14.99 and the 2 meat combo (brisket and spicy pork) for $9.99. They gave the option of uncooked or cooked meat, but we opted to have them cook it for us so we can eat right away :P It was kinda depressing picking up the food because there were no customers :( The owner lady was the only person in the back cooking BUT THAT'S GOOD!!! LESS COOKS = LOWER RISK OF CONTAMINATION/COVID-19! Phew Once our food was done (about 10-15 minutes from calling it in) we were handed TWO BAGS FULL OF FOOD. Including several pounds of meat.... 10 containers of sauces... rice paper.... AND banchan. ALL FOR $27. TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS. like what?! I felt bad that i was essentially getting a FEAST for so cheap while the business is clearly not doing so well, but the lady hooooked it up. I tipped $10 to show how much I appreciated her hard work. Food: The brisket was slightlyyy dry/thick but OOOOMG THE SHORT RIB AND BULGOGI WAS BOMB. The spicy pork was also good but short rib and bulgogi were the best hands down. We were stuffed after not even getting through half the food, so we basically got 2 meals out of a $27 DELICIOUS meal.
