The Tofu Soup was good. The sesame seed flavor was subtle. Not sure if that is the intention. We liked that it was served with purple rice. For the banchan, we were given an assortment of things, and we noted that the fritter/pancake and the cucumber kimchi were really good. Overall, giving Chung Dam Tofu a 4/5. Used to be a solid Korean restaurant. Not sure what happened. The restaurant was quite empty besides my group of 7 and one other group. Food took forever to come out, despite the restaurant being empty. When it finally came out, they all came out at different times, making it awkward for those who didn't get their food yet. Given how long everything took, I'm shocked at how mediocre the food was. I got the samgaetang which felt like just overcooked rice instead of the chewy rice that I'm used to and no ginseng or garlic for the price paid....only one sad jujube that was floating outside of the chicken (usually its all cooked inside together to add flavor to the rice) The naengmyun was also not memorable, which is tragic because this spot used to be our go-to spot for naengmyun. Prices seemed to have consistently gone up over the years with the food quality going down big time. It's a shame given there are so many Korean restaurant options nowadays. Three days ago, I took my mother out for a nourishing meal and went to a black goat soup restaurant, but it turned into one of the worst dining experiences of my life. The meat in the soup was extremely tough and barely edible, with only a few small pieces included. Most of the bowl was filled with organs. But the most shocking part was that I found a metal twist tie used to bundle vegetables in the soup. I almost swallowed it. I thought it was a bone at first, but when I spit it out, it was clearly a metal tie. When I called the waitress, she simply said sorry and offered to remake the soup. But how would that fix anything if it's made from the same ingredients? This is a basic hygiene issue. My mother was so upset she couldn't eat at all. We asked for the check, but it took a long time to arrive. There was no owner or manager available, and in the end they only removed the cost of my meal. That does not make up for what happened. This is not just poor service. It is a serious sanitation problem. What if my elderly mother had swallowed it and choked? This needs to be reported to the health authorities. read more

I don't like writing bad reviews but I think I'm going to be fair. It's been 3 days and I'm still searching for the Pork missing from my Tofu soup. I only ordered the Pork Tofu soup since I wasn't so hungry, while my friends ordered the larger entrees with a soup and a grilled protein of some sort. My Soup had ONE SLICE of PORK and some MINCED PORK scattered around in the bottom of the bowl. It came with a little cup of rice. The soup was good, but I'm still very confused as to why there was such a lack of meat in my bowl- there was plenty of Tofu at least my friends had plenty of seafood in their soups even though the crustaceans seemed almost inedible due to them being still in their shell. By the time I got the raw egg to put in my soup- it wasn't as hot anymore. The banchan was flavorful too and the service was good- I just had a feeling of being rushed to get out. They sat us in the busiest, noisiest central area instead of a quiet corner/cubical- which were fully available- but they urged us to sit down there. Chung Dam Tofu has always been one of my family's go-to spots to get Korean food in the area! Located in the NS Plaza, Chung Dam has somewhat limited parking spots as they share it with many businesses in the area. I don't usually have a hard time finding parking, but during peak hours it can get crowded! When you walk in you'll notice that the interior of the restaurant is its own spin between modern but traditional Korean architecture. I love how clean the restaurant is and how there are plenty of tables to accommodate both smaller and larger parties. They even have separate rooms available to reserve if you want a more private larger gathering. When you walk in you'll immediately be greeted by one of the servers who's quickly seat you. There's not too much of a wait normally, so you don't have to call in advanced (again only if you're not reserving a larger party). Every server I've met has always been so kind and friendly, and they definitely recognize repeat customers! This is definitely an authentic Korean restaurant, as all of the dishes that they serve are many of the traditional ones. The most recent time I went, I got the Noodle in Cold Black Bean Broth with acorn starch noodles and my dad got their Tonkatsu. Their noodles are my favorite whenever it's a hot day in the summer! It's so refreshing with the cold broth and I love how they still preserve the nutty taste from the pine nuts. It also is traditionally served with very little salt so it's up to you to add salt to your liking (it comes in a side dish separately). My dad's Tonkatsu was also so delicious. It was perfectly crispy but also light! The sauce is served on the side and is the perfect tangy complement to the fried katsu pieces. In terms of banchan, they offer a good amount with your typical sides, like cucumber kimchi. It's not an overwhelming amount, but definitely enough and they always offer refills! I will say that this place can be on the pricier side for some of these dishes, but they do give you large portions! Came here with a party of 4 kids and 3 adults, their space was spacious enough to seat all of us. We ordered galbi and Meng myun combo, ham and sausage tofu soup, yu ke jang and tonkatsu. The galbi was tender and flavorful. The neng myun was flavorful cold and refreshing perfect for hot summer days to cook you down while filling our bellies. The ham and sausage tofu soup was flavorful and everything came with a lot of side dishes and purple rice. The staff were friendly and really accommodating to the small children in our party. Maybe it's because they added radish to the soup? Spicy buckwheat noodles ($16.99) - 3.5/5. Can't taste the seasoning. Just tasted spicy and blandness at the same time. Chicken, vegetable in casserole ($45.99) - 4/5 - large order that feeds two. My husband gives it a 4 but I give it a 3.5/5. Not much depth of taste to this dish either. Some simple salt might enhance the flavor. Banchan (side dishes) - free. 5/5. Delicious! One of the few restaurants that put effort into plating their side dishes. You can only refill the side dishes twice and this was printed on their paper menu. Customer service - 4/5. Our waitress was very sweet even though she doesn't speak English well. She kept checking in on us and refilled our banchan and hot tea. Here's my verdict: 4/5 overall. I've had better versions of each dish in Koreatown but this place is 5 minutes from my house. The interior is clean and very well presented. Menu is extensive, and prices on the higher side (typical for Korean food), though portions are very generous. During this visit, the waitress did not have the best English, though we were able to communicate enough. She also forgot to bring our banchan until after the main dishes were served. She forgot to refill waters when we had asked as well, though as a result she was more observant for a subsequent water refill even before we asked for it. Despite these few small hiccups, service overall was friendly and professional. The food is very tasty. The banchan tasted fresh and the five dishes served that day were a nice variety of things. The stews were piping hot and meat delicious. I love fish egg and not every Korean restaurant offers al jjigae. Drop what you're doing and go to Chung Dam Tofu! This place was incredible and is the perfect spot for authentic Korean cuisine. The staff was incredibly welcoming and helped walk me through the menu. The menu provides plenty of options for groups so make sure to come hungry with friends. I recently had dinner here with a friend of mine, who had never been here before and I had eaten here many times before, so I confidently recommended it and we had dinner together. Once again, I was very pleased with the food and service, and my friend was also very pleased with the food and said that he would bring his family here next time. Interestingly, when I talk to my friends who have eaten here, they jokingly say that everything is delicious except for the Soondubu stew. The name of the restaurant indicates that it specializes in soondubu stew, but it's true that most of the menu is delicious except for that. Of course, I said it as a joke above, but I think it's because the soondubu stew is not bad, but the other menus are much tastier. Personally, when I go to this restaurant, I always eat Korean-style grilled pork ribs. There are two options, spicy and salt grilled, and both are delicious. The spicy pork ribs are really deliciously spicy, so don't be intimidated by them. I think they serve the best Korean-style grilled pork ribs in the Orange County area. Another great thing about this place is that the side dishes that come with it are also very good, and you could eat just those and still have a good meal. Also, the waitresses are very friendly and well behaved. They come to check if you need anything from time to time, and even if you ask for more because you're done with the basic side dishes, they always bring it back to you. The only downside to this restaurant was that the prices are slightly higher compared to other Korean restaurants, but as time has gone on and the cost of living has risen a bit, the prices of food at other Korean restaurants have risen relatively much, so it's not that much of a difference now, so that downside has naturally disappeared. In my family, the cost of eating out has gone up quite a bit since the cost of living has gone up, so we eat out less and less as a family. We usually eat at home most of the time, but when we do go out for a really good meal, we always make sure to stop by here. If I have to spend money on dining out, I'd rather spend it on really good food, so I don't feel like it's a waste. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience really good Korean food and especially Korean-style grilled pork ribs. read more
