Dr. Madsen was an awesome doctor for my cataract/IOL surgery. Very easy to talk to, explained everything upfront, and made sure I was comfortable with the expected outcomes (and downsides) for IOL vs. monofocal lenses (what insurance pays for) Net-net, my left eye ended up at 20/15 and my right eye a smidge over 20/20. But my upclose vision with my right eye was sharp at 12" and my left eye didn't get sharp until closer to 20". So unless I am trying to tie a flyfishing fly, I am 100% eyeglass free. I can read books, menus and my iPhone without readers, and have great long distance vision as well. My surgery was done in 2018 and everything is still great.

For Lasik, they need to cut a large flap into your eye... then the laser does the cutting/removal, etc. In SMILE, a tiny slit is cut (no flap), then the doctor does the cutting/removal instead of the laser. My recovery time was much longer; it took a couple months until my vision was perfect, whereas they recovered almost instantly... However, I almost never need eye drops... and they needed them for several months. The results are similar otherwise. How's my vision? 20/15... I could read a few of the 20/10 characters... but it took a bit of squinting. It feels weird to have functioning eyes. The process: You have some meetings, they check your eyes, and walk you through the procedures. If you're the nervous type, this may help you. This was maybe tmi for someone like me, since I prefer to trust the experts/doctors... that is, after doing hours of research and settling on SMILE and Dr. Malihi. However, tmi is better that no info, and many will find comfort in the "behind-the-scenes" tour. The actual surgery takes about 20 minutes... and it's uncomfortable, I mean it's your damn eyes... So, I just tried to relax and think about how this will all be over in no time- and it was. They do offer a chill pill of some sort, but I didn't take it... kinda wanted to feel it all... and it wasn't bad. You do feel a bit of scraping... because there is scraping. Again, worth it. They talk you through the whole thing... tell you when your vision is about to go cloudy, etc. There were people updating me on everything that was happening and there wasn't any mystery or reason to worry. The next day, my vision was kinda there... but after a few hours it got blurry... My partner had almost perfect vision after a day... but I was about 20/40 at best. I ended up working on tons of music, since staring a computer screen was doable but difficult. I traveled a couple weeks later, and my vision was still really blurry... SMILE does take longer to heal... but it's really worth it. After a couple of months, my vision is so good it's ridiculous. Just get it.

I got an answer to every one of my questions and didn't feel pressured at any point throughout the whole experience. I was a candidate for SMILE, LASIK, and PRK and was walked through the differences between the 3 and pros vs. cons. Ultimately, I decided to go with SMILE to correct my myopia (-4.50 and -5.0 with slight astigmatism) because I already had dry eyes and was concerned LASIK would make it worse. I was able to schedule the surgery for the following week, and the surgery itself was pretty quick and painless! My vision was blurry immediately after, but was 20/15 and 20/20 by the following day. Fantastic! This was, by far, the best medical experience I've ever had. I just wish I would've had Dr. Mahili do it sooner!

From the initial online consultation to the 2 hour in person consultation and day of every staff member was amazing. I appreciate Dr. Deal's frankness when we discussed I had a prism in my most recent rx, she was not shy about telling me if that correction was necessary, the Lasik procedure would not get me where I wanted to be. She didn't badmouth my Dr. she acknowledged it may have been a short term need and helped me get an updated rx without to wear for several weeks before surgery to make SURE I would get the results I wanted. I am a very anxious person, never wore contacts and eye drops were a challenge, I don't like things touching my eyes. The entire team was supportive and calming. Procedure nurse Amanda talked me through the process. Providing another update as I had another Lasik surgery to correct the remaining prescription I had…read morein both eyes after my first surgery. I waited the minimum 3 months to see how things would heal, then waited an additional 3 to see if things progressed. The latter portion was partly my decision and my scheduling challenges, but the touch-up surgery was worth waiting for. They say that this can be a common thing for about 1 in 10 patients. While going through this again 6 months after my initial surgery wasn't the idea I had going in, it was even easier than the first surgery, plus it didn't cost me a cent. I had my full vision almost immediately following and now have better than perfect vision. Had some of the same team treat me this second time around, including Dr. Madsen, but again everyone was really comforting and helpful. I love not wearing contacts or worrying about driving at night!
