Love love love me some Sunset Grill! This is my favorite breakfast spot in Ithaca and it had never failed me yet! You might think about skipping out, because the outside looks like nothing special and its next to a gas station/Rogan's and a liquor store. DON'T BE FOOLED. it's fantastic. (Also, don't be cooked by the name. While it's called sunset grill, the restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch. Apparently it used to be open for dinner back the day.) The view is fantasticand if it's one of the two days out of the year when Ithaca had nice weather, sit outside! Things to try: Bomber Plate. I forget what's on this, but I remember it being something like, eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage, gravy... and some other things. Either way, IT'S GOOD. corned beef hash: YES. so delish. ANY OMELETTE! I've never had the pancakes, but my friends have. The portions are big and they say they're good. Service is always good, just watch out for Saturday and Sunday mornings during the academic year, otherwise there will be SO MANY IC students (I would have been in this crowd myself) so if you don't like loud college students or crowds, stay away on those dates. But I wrote recommend just waiting it out, because this place is that awesome. read more

Poor quality food with hardly any vegan options. Staff are unaware of what is vegan on the menu. Food was bland and overall not good. Staff was speaking inappropriately, loudly, within a distance we could clearly hear from. Would not go to again. read more

Surprisingly okay. I'd never even heard about this place and luckily I checked Yelp before heading off to this place. It's quiet and the food is decently priced with large portions. If you're just looking for some classic diner food in Ithaca, this is definitely one of the places I'd check out. Service was good too. Just don't be creeped out by the fact it's in the middle of nowhere forestland in some random and slightly sketchy looking log building right next to a liquor store. read more

This was our second time at Sunset Grill. The first time was great, but unfortunately I cannot say the same about my experience today. I understand that restaurants are trying to regain crowds after COVID, but it seemed to be more than that. We were told to wait in the sun for over 15 minutes while someone "cleaned our table". There were only 2 other tables in the outside area, and no one ever went outside to clean a table for us or came to get us afterward. We decided to move closer to the outdoor seating area thinking someone would see us and have us seated, but the waitress made eye contact with us on 2 separate occasions and never acknowledged us waiting. After about 15 more minutes of waiting with no one acknowledging our party, we decided to go to another diner down the street with EXCELLENT service. Needless to say we will no longer be eating at Sunset Grill. read more

A busy destination for Sunday brunch, Sunset Grill has a great atmosphere and a killer view if you're seated in one of the booths along the window overlooking Ithaca. The service was friendly and we were seated in a short amount of time given how crowded it was. I ordered the steak and eggs and must admit the food was not very good. The steak was incredibly overcooked and the home fries were flavorless. Dishes around the room looked much more appetizing so I wouldn't oppose to coming back for another try, but I would definitely not order the steak and eggs again. read more

Went there a couple weeks ago for breakfast. Full house. We should have left. It felt very unsafe with poor ventilation. No plexiglass. Just tables and booths right next to each other. People all with masks off the whole time they were sitting there which could be ok except the seating was tight. No wonder covid is still raging. read more

Pretty standard diner food. We ordered sunny side up eggs, toast, pancakes, and home fries. The eggs were done well, and the home fries were okay too. The pancakes and serving sizes in general are quite generous, and they also gave us a whole pitcher of coffee for refills, which was a nice bonus. read more

This really needs a NEGATIVE 5 star review. Horrible, horrible, horrible. We had a reservation 3 months in advance, and arrived 10 mins early with 3 out of 6 in our party. (We explained the other 3 patrons had my handicapped mother in the car, was parking, and would be in momentarily.) The male greeter sternly told us he would not hold the table until all were present and then, gave our table away! Our complete party arrived within 10 minutes of that conversation, at 5:28p for our 5:30p table, including my mother, with her walker. A table did open up, and we sat, and waited 20 minutes for said greeter/waiter to arrive with water, who then proceeded to dump the tray of 6 water filled glasses all over my son and me, soaking my clothing and our table! He then did the EXACT SAME THING with his NEXT tray of water! (Picture hundreds of ice cubes spilled out on the floor - at the dining room entrance. (This was NEVER addressed, with patrons crunching their way over the cubes, heading to tables) ...sparing you the rest of the horrible meal and experience.. except, it then took 1.5 hours to receive cold burgers, fries, and a chicken parm (think ice cold cheese over ice cold tomato sauce). NEVER an apology, except our waitress seemed to be trying. When leaving, we noticed the counter section piled high, with dirty, food filled dishes. Gross is an understatement. Understaffed, poorly trained, and ZERO campassion. And I paid over $100 for this experience! read more

Here's the thing. I love sunset grill. This was my go to throughout all of college. I went there every other weekend and they have great diner food. BUT I have had two terrible experiences, which have completely ruined my good times there. Yesterday, I went with a group of 6 people. It is the day after slope day at Cornell, so we knew it would be busy. We were told it would be a 25 minute wait. We waited over an hour to be seated. When we were finally seated, we were ignored for 15 minutes before a server came over to us. We were so frustrated that we just left. I really hope that the wait staff can pull things together, so I can go back and enjoy it again. read more

We used to go fairly regularly. The staff used to be friendly. Unfortunately, things have changed there, including the loss of a really good cook. Last time we went in for breakfast the music was very loud (and bad). When we asked the waitress to turn it down, she said "a little", making it sound like we were the problem. I had a very bad experience there =(. I heard it's a nice place to have brunch, so went over with friends this Sunday. It did look like a very popular place and we waited for 20 minutes to get a seat. The service was very very sloooowwww... I waited forever for getting one set of silverware... The food came way too slow and the waiters just barely served us anything at all... The food was okay but we just couldn't enjoy it after waiting for so long.We got the Bacon Mushroom omelet, sausage bagel sandwich and a banana pancake. My two collegues and I were visiting Ithaca for a memorial service and decided to have Sunday brunch at the Sunset Grill based on the reviews here. We put in our name, waited about 20 minutes and then were seated on the lovely (but quite chilly) deck. Within 10 minutes our waitress came over, brought us water and coffee and took our orders. We waited for the next 60 minutes and did not see our waitress. We got no coffee refills, no one stopped by to say sorry we're really busy, nothing. One of us went to the hostess station and told the hostess that we had been waiting for an hour and could someone please send our waitress over. Ten minutes later, still nothing. So we grabbed another waitress and her to please send over our waitress and/or the manager. Another 10 minutes and out comes the waitress with our food along with the manager. She set our plates down and asked if we were all set. We said, no, we didn't have any silverware or coffee. While one of my companions explained to the manager that we had been waiting for well over an hour without one word from our waitress, I realized that my food was ice cold and the eggs had a dark yellow dried crust over them. When I told the manager that my food was cold he said to us: Have you ever been here before? I said no, we're from out of town. He said well we're usually not like this. I said so? ?? We just want warm food in a timely manner. He then began to yell at one of my companions, really loud. We walked out of the resteraunt. Once in the parking lot, the waitress came running out after us wondering why we were leaving. It was just the worst expereince I have ever had in a resteraunt anywhere. Never once did with the waitress or the manager apologize, not for waiting so long, not for no coffee refills, not for cold food and not for yelling at us. Just terrible customer service. Never got to taste the food. Must be good because the place was busy, but jeeze! read more

My husband and I went here for breakfast. The servers were very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. I got the special apple cinnamon french bread and my husband got eggs, bacon and pancakes. Wonderful place to eat. I would have like to sit on the deck and enjoy the view but it was a bit too cold for that. At least they have lots of windows over to look at the scenery from inside. read more

This restaurant is a must go to for breakfast. I ordered the steak and eggs and the steak was surprisingly cooked to perfection. It was seasoned well and the whole nine yards. I had been here before and loved it but this time we sat at the counter and watched them work! Now not only do I love it but I have a real appreciation for their fresh ingredients, homemade dishes and their attention to detail. My friend had the homemade corned beef hash and declared it the best! Not too salty, real homemade roast beef. Perfect marbled rye toast to accompany. I had the eggs Benedict. Perfect poached eggs, lovely asparagus and ham. I had the hollandaise on the side which was cold but excellent. We told them that it was cold and he said he was afraid to reheat it because it would separate. We told him to just nuke it but he lovingly gentle heated it in a pan. Don't let the fact that the Grill shares a parking lot with a gas station and a liquor store cause you to go elsewhere. Went on Sunday afternoon for a late breakfast. It was still a 20 minute wait. Food was excellent. My son loved the bacon waffles and said the cinnamon role was fantastic. I had the corned beef hash and I have to say that I have had better. But the eggs were perfect and the blueberry pancake was really good. In the warmer months, the view from the porch must be awesome. read more
