They made their OG breakfast bagel with a gluten-free one and it was a complete hit with my teen. So much so that we had to come back the next day as well. Hound and Mare is one of the cafes that I visit regularly when I'm staying in downtown Ithaca. I usually am getting either drip coffee or an espresso-based drink, but they also offer a food menu including baked goods and pastries. I tried a tasty chocolate donut recently and learned that their donuts come from an source in Elmira. The coffee drinks have been solid, and the staff have been consistently welcoming when I've gone. I've also seen people working on their computers, so I imagine it's a good place for studying or reading. read more

We stopped by Hound and Mare for breakfast and coffee on our drive back from a weekend in the Finger Lakes, and it was a satisfying meal without breaking the bank. Clean minimal interiors, service is quick - order and pick up at the counter. There is ample space in the cafe to dine in. I ordered the avocado toast, which came topped with pickled onions and radish. It was fresh, flavorful, and I especially liked the addition of the radish--it's not something I would have thought to add to avocado toast, but it worked really well. I'll definitely remember that idea the next time I make one at home. My husband ordered the egg bagel sandwich with crispy kale. The kale added a nice texture and flavor, although he felt it was a little oily. We also had an Americano and an espresso, both of which were freshly brewed and made for a great start to the drive home. If you're looking for a good breakfast and coffee spot in Ithaca, Hound and Mare is definitely worth a stop. read more

They have a couple of breakfast sandwich options, but the Melrose stood out to me right away. It has bacon, over easy egg, a slice of crispy cheddar, garlic aioli, and caramelized onions on a toasted sesame bagel. Usually, I'm not a over easy or sunny side up person because I don't like egg yolk, but this whole sandwich with everything made it work for me. It was so tasty and satisfying. I've never had a crispy slice of cheese like this. I enjoyed the sandwich so much that I got it again the next day. I made the mistake of squeezing the sandwich and the egg yolk squirted on my sleeves. It seems like a popular spot. There was a line of people both days I went. A Fantastic cup of coffee. Friendly welcoming staff, and they're more than willing to engage with you, and talk about the music playing. Cute atmosphere. I had the Melrose, which is one of the best BEC sandwiches I have ever had. The caramelized onion with the garlic aioli is a perfect complement to the crispy cheddar egg and bacon. I travel for work, I have been to 90 Food Network places in 39 states. This one's a winner. My only qualm would be that I prefer real coffee cups if I am sitting down, but then this place does a lot of pickup/takeout, so disposable cups make sense. Just a preference. read more

We had the best breakfast on our trip here! The Hound and Mare has such a cool unique vibe and they're obviously a safe space for anyone. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Everything came pretty quickly. They have tons of indoor seating and some outdoor seating, but we ended up sitting around the corner outside on the Commons. The bagels were amazing! I tried to go here twice while in town. Each day they ran out of most items by 11am. The second day I even went and stood in the long line up until two people were ahead of me and they took the last cinnamon roll. i wonder if they could make more of their most common items if they consistently run out of them early. the inside ambiance is small and tight id recommend getting items togo. read more

Their Apple fritter is decent with a crispy exterior, soft pillowy inside with cinnamony apples between the crevices of the dough, and a sugary glaze on the outside. Their chocolate chip cornflake cookie was on the crispier/harder side, whereas I prefer a thicker and chewier cookie. Visited Ithica this week and found this perfectly located coffee spot. The coffee was coffee, hot and tasted like coffee, just how I like it. But, the breakfast sandwiches were next level. The default egg on their sandwiches is over easy, which works out awesome and is not as messy as you'd think. They do ask if you're ok with that or would like it cooked any other way. My favorite was the Melrose. It had so much flavor for a breakfast sandwich. The employees are very freindly and the ambiance is the perfect mix of darkness and light. read more

Had a tasty almond milk cappuccino and sat in a lovely window seat enjoy it. Surfer music on the radio, friendly baristas, delicious looking bakery items (nothing vegan tho). They have seating outside in the sidewalk too. Would add that 5th star and make this a regular spot(!) if they served their coffee in real mugs and had vegan cream cheese for their bagels. This place was so good that we came back twice in a 4 day stay. They have so many options for breakfast sandwiches - from a "basic b" to more unique options. I kept it pretty simple. Got a sausage, egg & cheese on an everything bagel one day. Bacon, egg & cheese on an English muffin the next time. Both were divine, but the English muffin bears mentioning because it was the superior carb. The cinnamon latte is heaven in a cup and I wish I could drink one every morning for the rest of time. My avocado toast was beautiful to look at and equally as tasty. I ordered an egg to go with it and it looked like two eggs for $2 or less. Incredible. Seating is limited but great, service is excellent. Coffee is on par for Ithaca, so nice but not what I'm used to. I tried the maple latte. My friend did too but his milk foam was at cappuccino level and not at all microfoam while mine was a little finer. I took one bite and despite the cost I couldn't continue. 2/5 However it was redeemed by the sausage on English muffin sandwiches - also $8-$9 it was delicious.
