They have a couple of breakfast sandwich options, but the Melrose stood out to me right away. It has bacon, over easy egg, a slice of crispy cheddar, garlic aioli, and caramelized onions on a toasted sesame bagel. Usually, I'm not a over easy or sunny side up person because I don't like egg yolk, but this whole sandwich with everything made it work for me. It was so tasty and satisfying. I've never had a crispy slice of cheese like this. I enjoyed the sandwich so much that I got it again the next day. I made the mistake of squeezing the sandwich and the egg yolk squirted on my sleeves. It seems like a popular spot. There was a line of people both days I went. We had the best breakfast on our trip here! The Hound and Mare has such a cool unique vibe and they're obviously a safe space for anyone. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Everything came pretty quickly. They have tons of indoor seating and some outdoor seating, but we ended up sitting around the corner outside on the Commons. The bagels were amazing! Super friendly staff and cute ambiance in this tucked away cafe. There are many savory options, drinks, and baked goods to choose from. Their Apple fritter is decent with a crispy exterior, soft pillowy inside with cinnamony apples between the crevices of the dough, and a sugary glaze on the outside. Their chocolate chip cornflake cookie was on the crispier/harder side, whereas I prefer a thicker and chewier cookie. A Fantastic cup of coffee. Friendly welcoming staff, and they're more than willing to engage with you, and talk about the music playing. Cute atmosphere. I had the Melrose, which is one of the best BEC sandwiches I have ever had. The caramelized onion with the garlic aioli is a perfect complement to the crispy cheddar egg and bacon. I travel for work, I have been to 90 Food Network places in 39 states. This one's a winner. My only qualm would be that I prefer real coffee cups if I am sitting down, but then this place does a lot of pickup/takeout, so disposable cups make sense. Just a preference. read more

Visited Ithica this week and found this perfectly located coffee spot. The coffee was coffee, hot and tasted like coffee, just how I like it. But, the breakfast sandwiches were next level. The default egg on their sandwiches is over easy, which works out awesome and is not as messy as you'd think. They do ask if you're ok with that or would like it cooked any other way. My favorite was the Melrose. It had so much flavor for a breakfast sandwich. The employees are very freindly and the ambiance is the perfect mix of darkness and light. read more

Had a tasty almond milk cappuccino and sat in a lovely window seat enjoy it. Surfer music on the radio, friendly baristas, delicious looking bakery items (nothing vegan tho). They have seating outside in the sidewalk too. Would add that 5th star and make this a regular spot(!) if they served their coffee in real mugs and had vegan cream cheese for their bagels. The Melrose bagel has to be one of the best bagels I've ever had. With the crunchiness of the bacon and cheese and the fluffiness of the inside of the bagel. My avocado toast was beautiful to look at and equally as tasty. I ordered an egg to go with it and it looked like two eggs for $2 or less. Incredible. Seating is limited but great, service is excellent. Coffee is on par for Ithaca, so nice but not what I'm used to. I tried the maple latte. My friend did too but his milk foam was at cappuccino level and not at all microfoam while mine was a little finer. This place was so good that we came back twice in a 4 day stay. They have so many options for breakfast sandwiches - from a "basic b" to more unique options. I kept it pretty simple. Got a sausage, egg & cheese on an everything bagel one day. Bacon, egg & cheese on an English muffin the next time. Both were divine, but the English muffin bears mentioning because it was the superior carb. The cinnamon latte is heaven in a cup and I wish I could drink one every morning for the rest of time. Hmmm... $8-$9 for a breakfast bagel in upstate New York... So I got an avocado bagel.. the bagel first and foremost was not good - dry and stale. I took one bite and despite the cost I couldn't continue. 2/5 However it was redeemed by the sausage on English muffin sandwiches - also $8-$9 it was delicious. Prices were very affordable in comparison to some other nearby coffee shops. It is definitely a more social coffee shop for casual conversation versus studying. Soooo good!!! We came here on a Wednesday morning and there was a small line but nothing too crazy. We ordered avocado toast, 3 donuts and two cookies. The donuts and cookies were SO delicious, and the avocado toast was probably one of the best avo toasts I've had, and I've had a loooot of different kinds!!! It's too bad we live far away, because I'd definitely come back here again - but if you're in town, absolutely visit this spot!!!! Perfect for a grab and go, or a quick breakfast. Stopped by here while in Ithaca for a quick(one night) trip. We were in the mood to get a feel for the town and this showed up first for the highest reviews. It was a little cafe--super cute--but still had a good amount of seating. It was quite busy(sat morning) as almost every chair was filled. I got the NY maple hot latte which was phenomenal, now normally I don't love my coffee too sweet but this was so so good, definitely recommend. I also got the bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted everything bagel; SO yummy and the perfect size. Also got a flat white(pretty average but their coffee beans are definitely above average) and avocado toast. It was jazzed up with some pickled onions, radish and hot sauce(we added)-super yummy. Only waited about 5-10 min for all this and they brought it over to our table. The breakfast burritos also looked really good. Cute spot would reccomend. read more

Yas. I attended SUNY Cortland so I was wary about Ithaca. But the advice for the festive weekend away was "don't sleep in Ithaca". And after arriving late on a Friday night and sleeping IN a Ithaca, we wandered down from the Marriott for a bagel brunch. Do not sleep on Ithaca indeed. Aside from a formative D3 football rivalry, I'm not mad about hanging out here if I can start my day with a bagel sandwich and an iced latte from Hound and Mare. Iced Matcha Latte, with almond milk and I asked the v nice and not pretentious yet knowledgeable barista for "a touch of agave if it's not already sweet". He informed me there was exactly a touch of sweetness already. 5 stars. And not too much ice. You know how that can be annoying. Then my traveling companion and I each ordered a sandwich so we could split them and not have to choose only one. The Pacific was glorious. That honey whipped feta and kale would make my bubbe roll over in her grave from such a departure from the schmear that historically belongs on bagels but she's dead and I'm here and it was delicious. Eat it with a fork to fully appreciate the runny egg. The Cofax had some sesame marinated ribeye steak, fried shallots, cheddar and siracha aioli on a sesame bagel and the meat and cheese on a bagel game should consider itself elevated with a mild Asian flare. Unmatched breakfast sandwich (to-go, of course) -- The Melrose, with caramelized onion, bacon, aioli, and perfect runny egg. The coffee was hot and freshly brewed, and got a thumbs up from my coworkers. Everything was prepared quickly, and it was extremely pleasant to wait in the large and airy space. Looking forward to post-pandemic times when I can visit indoors more regularly and spend an afternoon in the cute window booth. Bonus points that Jackie and Ben (staff) are super lovely. We were staying at the Hilton Garden Inn and this place is just down the block so really convenient, and very good so will be back here on our next trip. I ordered the Melrose sandwich, crumb cake and maple latte. The Melrose was really good although I took it back to the hotel so the egg was not runny. If you like runny eggs I would suggest eating it there. The bacon was super crunchy, which I like and the cheese is more of a cheddar wafer so it is not melted, but it goes very well in this sandwich. The crumb cake was a bit of a miss because it was a little too bready; I like ny crumb cake moist and fluffy. I saw someone recommended the NY maple latte and I really liked it. Warning, the maple makes it sweet so unless you are a sugar fiend, you do not need to add sugar. There is seating inside and a couple of tables outside but it was a nice morning and the people outside looked like they were camped out for a long stay. So if you want outside seating, go very early; I was there at 9am. read more
