I stopped by Sunset Grill while venturing down to the southern tip of Ithaca for some clay wheelthrowing. The location is a bit of a trek if you're without a car (especially in the winter), which probably explains why it wasn't too crowded when I got there. But the people who were there were super friendly and helpful, which made the experience that much better! I went for the Saturday Special Steak, which was around $20, and it did not disappoint. I chose the "petite" steak (because the King and Queen sizes sounded like a bit much for me), but even the petite was massive. I couldn't finish most of it, but I was definitely full. The portions are no joke. Overall, the food was great, the portions were generous, and the staff made it a really pleasant stop. Sunset Grill is family owned, simple and gets the job done. A large group of us came on a Saturday morning, and we were sat down immediately. Their menu is simple breakfast food, and quite affordable. I got the three eggs any style, and my partner got the sausage gravy, and eggs special. Not my favorite home fries as I like a crispier exterior. The sausage gravy was very oily though. Portion sizes are good. They have indoor and outdoor tables, and with great views if you plan to sit outside. The parking lot is on the smaller end. You can call ahead to make a reservation. Breakfast here was amazing! My group had the eggs Benedict's and got French fries which were yummy, thick and fluffy. Definitely recommend the French fries over the home fries. The omelettes were yummy can't go wrong with that. The Bloody Mary's were a good size and tasted good, nice flavor to them. Recommend coming here is even though it looks a little run down and rusty tables outside. Ps: outside the tables are rusty and run down and a bunch of honeybees outside so heads up. They have little cups of jam/ butter on the rail for them- if you are allergic stay inside. But nice breakfast for a fine price. Came midday Saturday and expected there to be quite a few people, which was definitely true. It took a while to be seated, which is okay. The issues started from there: service was immensely slow, even for peak hour standards. About 15 minutes until we got water, another ten before we ordered, and other 20 before we got our food. To top it off, the food was not even that good - my gyro was quite average and something that Peter Griffin could have made at home more times than not. In addition, the menu prices are not up to date. Don't be surprised if you get charged more than the price listed on the menu. Bonus points for having apple sauce as a side! Don't come here unless you're hungry. The kind of hungry that happens after starvation. Portions sizes are insanely huge. As soon as we walked in we were seated. There was no crowd so I assume the bad reviews come from a time when they are really busy. The hostess was very welcoming and our waitress was at our table immediately. Waters, coffee and orange juice were out fast. The juice was very sugary but the coffee was perfect. We ordered omelets and corned beef hash platter. Everything was cooked outstanding. The omelets were even plated in an appealing way. We got a take home box and refills for coffee were prompt. A bit pricey but it's Ithaca and again, I am shocked at the large portion sizes. We didn't sit outside but I can see where the view is pretty amazing. Overall a great breakfast and the staff is wonderful. A great little place where you'll leave very full with extra. read more

Terrible service, I felt like they didn't want me to be at their establishment. The food is average.

This was a walk from campus. The decor friendly, the terrace very solid but the air was very smoky so I sat indoors. That did have the disadvantage of dueling musical radios stations, industry rap and classic rock from the kitchen. The other lone diners indoors remarked on this musical soup too. The servers were busy going in and out doors but were friendly and no-nonsense. The food was done well but wasn't extraordinary, the sauce for the prime rib could have been better, the potatoes could have been improved, but all in all it was a respectable meal prepared with care. By the way, i tried going back the next day on sunday and the place was MOBBED, still only two servers and well, no service. They likely are short staffed. read more

I was here, Sept 2, for breakfast on a windy day. Thus, we couldn't enjoy the view on the deck. The servers were friendly, quick, and knowledgeable about their menu. Bear in mind some of the dishes will be sold out as our table had the last quiche of the day . The quiche were not terrible but the fruits that comes with it could be fresher. The star of the table would be the homemade corned beef hash, plenty of meat balanced out with green, red pepper, onion and potatoes. I had it with 2 over easy eggs and marble rye bread. Will be back for more. My party also had the 2+2+2, which is 2 eggs+2 pieces of ham +2 pancakes. The prices were reasonable and affordable with college students. It is close to Ithaca College and plenty of parking as well. I think they named one of their omelets after the college, Bomber Omelette, which is filled with eggs and plenty of meats. What a quaint brunch spot! We sat on the deck which sort of overlooks the lake (the trees block a majority but the view is still stunning). Our server was attentive and fast which was appreciated. I got the banana waffles with bacon and I wanted to live inside one of those waffles lemme tell ya. Crisp without being burnt and packed to the gills with bananas. Bacon was exactly the way i liked it and tasted fresh. Their mimosas were so good! Our server suggested pineapple juice instead of orange juice. One of worst restaurant experiences I've had. Neglectful and rude wait staff. We left after an hour having received no food while watching tables of eight, two, five and four, that arrived well after my party of three arrived, be served. The waitress and owner clearly appalled by my gall to note these issues rather than working to sort the problem. Wait staff studiously avoids all eye contact lest they be called upon to place an order. First and last visit. I'd review the food, but again, despite an irritating hour spent there, no food was had. read more

My favorite spot for breakfast/brunch in Ithaca, mostly for the superb outdoor seating with a view + hazelnut coffee! The menu is classic diner food, basically everything I've eaten here has been delicious. My go-to is two eggs over easy with fries instead of hash browns. They serve the fries with a russian dressing on the side which we refer to as the "fry sauce" but is almost definitely just a premade salad dressing they put into a container - I don't care, it's so good! Service can be hit or miss depending how busy they are (and when the weather is nice they do get super busy at peak times on the weekends) - but as long as you know this is a casual place and aren't expecting white-glove service, it's totally fine! read more

All around meh. The service is okay, the atmosphere inside is alright and outside you have the view... But you can't see the lake because of the trees on the bluff below. In spring or fall the view *could* be spectacular. The food... is hit or miss. I've been here a few times and remember being mostly satisfied but never blown away. Except that time I ordered steak and eggs medium rare and got a very well done steak. I sent it back and got another well done steak... If it was a good cut it might have been palatable, but it was more or less dog food at that point. read more

Came here with a big group for a Sunday breakfast. I think having the big group was a problem. The waitress was super nice but had a hard time getting everyone coffee and food out on time. Half the people got their food and then we waited for the other half. The other half (except one person) got their food about 10 minutes later. The first half had finished their meals and had their plates cleared by the busboy before the remaining meal came out. The food was good, though. We had breakfast vouchers from our hotel to use here so we came one morning. We got here about 2 hours after they are supposed to be open but the doors were locked and we didn't see anyone inside. Someone came out and said they weren't taking customers for now as they had a bad morning. We got in our car to leave but then several more cars came and several people were let in. We joined them since we didn't have another place to eat in mind. Based on what I heard I'm guessing the server who was supposed to be there didn't show up which is unfortunate. There was one server (who had just come in) and about 3-8 groups of customers during the time we were there. He seemed pretty overwhelmed but he did a great job getting everyone taken care of despite the slow start. We ordered bagels with egg, cheese, and sausage or bagel with cheese and bacon. They both came with home fries. Everything was pretty good! The inside was a little dirty, lots of crumbs on the seats/benches. Took about 30 minutes to be seated on a Sunday morning. Few groups were seated before me just because of where they were standing, even though they came in much after me. Took another 20 minutes to put food and drink order in. I asked four times for a coffee refill and then got it maybe 30 minutes later. No one stopped to ask if I need anything - had to flag down staff which made me uncomfortable. Is it the staff's fault? No, they are extremely understaffed and overwhelmed, they're human. However I did not plan to be here for 2 hours. Outdoor seating had a good view. Great and affordable food that is on the top of a hill in Ithaca. The views on the outside were very nice, although there were many bees flying around my food.
