This diner was a complete disaster, I came here for breakfast one morning and management is awful. We were ignored for a bit and then eventually acknowledged us. The coffee was a bit watered down and the platter we got. We asked for EXTRA well done bacon but it came out half well done and half soggy. Poached eggs... now this was a first for me. Poached eggs was in a cup with the water...home fries were like mashed potatoes, I understand that different diners do either diced or kinda sliced up but this was completely mashed up. The whole experience was bad for me. The worse was that the owner reached offer my table to tell his busser to give him the rag... EXTREMELY RUDE WHEN HE ASKED his employee. and the fact that he retrieved over my head! how unsanitary! Also, our watery coffee was never refilled. Why four stars? Two words, sausage links. I am a sucker for the kind of sausage you see on tv...you kno huge and link-like. It kind of reminds me of the links you see tony soprano swinging around at his bbqs and not that crap you get at burgerking or mcdonalds. Win. Anyways onto the rest of the meal, I got the hungry man breakfast, w/ eggs over medium, homefries and aforementioned sausage. Surprisingly they cooked my eggs over medium properly!! GASP. This does not happen often in diners as most places just make it over ez and tell you to eff off. Pancakes were also nice. I dont eat pancakes much so im mostly comparing to the likes of ihop, but these were nice. A bit crispy not soggy, win. The only downer was the homefries. They weren't bad, but they just werent good. I don't even like diners but I hadn't eaten breakfast so by noon I was starving. I pass this place everyday but finally decided to try it. I got the country fried steak and eggs and it was amazing. Wow! What a find. We had spent the day on the boardwalk, but the restaurants all looked overwhelmed with long waits, so we hit this place on the way back to the Parkway. Excellent diner food. We all had burgers and they were big, fresh and perfectly cooked. The fries and onion rings were crispy and there were plenty of them. Service was very friendly and food came out quick. It pains me to leave this review. Let's start by being seated in back of unruly loud patrons. Further to be disappointed to find menu items on menu aren't available. I understand restaurants are struggling but not to in some way block out or make it clear which items aren't available is not acceptable. The sauce on the linguine was not a marinara sauce or an Italian sauce at all but rather a red clam sauce which to be honest went bad or something because it didn't taste right. If you plan to go to this restaurant call ahead to see if they have what you intend to eat because they may not have it. I've paid a few visits to this classic diner over the past few weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed it. In my view anyway, I see no basis for some of the negative comments. The weekday early dinner specials are phenomenal and this Saturday nights chicken Oscar stuffed with crabmeat in a lovely cream sauce over rice was sublime. A velvety cream of turkey soup and custard bread pudding rounded out the meal. It would be nice to see the diner get a bit more support than they seem to. This is my second time coming to the sunset diner but the first time was many many years ago with a friend and I don't remember my experience. However, this morning I ordered through doordash for myself to pick up on my way to work I got a breakfast quesadilla with salsa and sour cream on the side. I picked it up and the man at the counter was very friendly and my order was ready on time however once I got to work and I opened it to eat it I dipped my quesadilla in the salsa and it was so acidic that it was tingling on my tongue and tasted like vodka. It was so soiled that it made me gag. I spit it out in the garbage and decided to try the sour cream to see if I could at least have one thing to dip my quesadilla into and it was clumpy and cheesy so I had to spit that out as well, once I took a bite of the quesadilla on its own I noticed that the cheese inside of the quesadilla tasted funky so in the end I had no meal and now I don't feel good. Looks delicious and I wish that I could say the same for how it actually taste but I can't. It's one thing if a restaurant gets an order wrong or some other silly mistake that can be fixed but when something has gone bad and you are serving expired or spoiled food to customers, that's when there's an issue. I'm not only out $10 now but I have no breakfast at work and I feel sick to my stomach because I was served food that had gone bad. read more

Bagels, pancakes and eggs Oh my! Placed in a small strip mall type thing on crowded Sunset Ave the Sunset Diner is a no frills place to stop and eat when coffee and a bagel on the run just won't do. Don't get nervous though, they do have bagels, yummy chewy ones and their coffee is not too shabby. Their pancakes are great and their servers have just the right amount of attitude to make you feel like a regular. *sigh nothing like some fresh cooked diner food to make you miss mom yelling at you on Saturday morning. read more

Just had breakfast here and I was pleasantly surprised. My wife and I are down in the area for a friend's wedding, and while I had some time to kill, I needed a spot for a solid breakfast. Yelp fixes all. I ordered my usual diner request: a nice omelette with egg whites, ham and cheese. A side of home fries was also in order. Topped off with a side of toast and a big glass of OJ, the meal was spot-on. Done well, extra hot, and the home fries were fantastic. Felt like getting dinner, just not sure what I was in the mood for. A diner has EVERYTHING!! So I looked up diners & came upon Sunset Diner, the reviews sounded great. I am SOOOO glad I went. Had the prime rib which was tender, juicy, super flavorful (no condiments needed!) & cooked to perfection! The mashed potatoes are real & also delicious. Salad is made when you order it, they use all fresh veggies. I like to sit at the counter, I'm glad I did. There was laughing & joking amongst the staff & customers. I felt right at home & among friends. The waitresses are just the right amount of attentive, engaged me in conversation, plus are very friendly & welcoming. Definitely will be back! read more

My 3 friends and I randomly picked this place to eat lunch yesterday on our day trip to Asbury Park Beach. It wasn't that crowded, the service was very friendly and quick, and most importantly, the food tasted great. Breakfast can be a smoothie, full on eggs, meat and pancakes 9r a great salad. Big booths and tables with quick service. Just off 35 and easy in and out with large parking lot in the back. Ordered from this place 3 times. They only do Uber eats and door dash. All 3 times they have got my order wrong. I ordered a cheesesteak all 3 times, clearly making the cheesesteak selection and not the chicken cheeksteak selection. And all 3 times they send chicken. It's literally on the receipt they put on the bag! Uber doesn't want to cure it except give me basically what I paid for, I'm not eating it, it's absolute trash when I tried it the first time. 2nd two sandwiches got dumped right in the garbage. This is the GARDEN STATE and it's understood that this is a diner, but at the very least get fresh vegetables! The low lights: Burnt omlete no fresh vegetables on any of the meals chicken was chewy bland beef in the goulash fruit bowl looked old didn't offer/mention the rest of the dinner special items (vegetables, dessert) Returned goulash, kitchen staff came out to look at us Made the wrong pancakes, staff ate them in a nearby table Whole wheat pancakes were cut open Highs: Decent French toast The worst meal in a very long time. This place looks very small from the outside but it is pretty big inside and there is additional parking in the back. came here for brunch and was pleased that they had healthy options on the menu for those watching what they're eating. I ordered broccoli and cheese with egg whites and instead of home fries I had a side of fruit. the food was good and even though my meal was healthier and less calories it still left me feeling full and satisfied. for my sister who had your typical eggs with cheese, home fries, sausage and toast, she loved it and said it was good food.
