The winter (April) winds on the boardwalk can hurt your ears, but an Asbury Park off-season weeknight offers an easier chance to get into the classier joints. The fanciful menu certainly would have provided fodder for my internal monologue, but I was lucky enough to visit Talula's with someone who thoughtfully analyzed the offerings and was unfraid to accept the riskiest dare: the vegan crab cakes. No, you won't be thinking crustaceans, but it was closer to the Yacht Rock Revue's remake of "Baker Street" than the vile Joss Stone cover of "Fell In Love With A Girl." With an unexpectedly strong performances by hearts of palm, it was a reasonable emulation of the paradigm even if it could have been a tiny bit crustier and more Old Bayish. The Yelp consensus gets it wrong with the ricotta toast, which was fine but not essential. I assume the brunchier brand extensions are more notable than the flagship. Don't miss the fermented chili carbonara. I'm not even going to paraphrase the wild list of ingredients: "hand-cut ramen, house fermented fresno chili paste, garlic, ginger, tamari, benton's bacon, sous vide egg, parm, chive." Less shocking but still enjoyable is the Beekeeper's Lament pizza. After the above feast, this dessert agnostic tried to nope out, but the teacup brulee had an impeccable citrus vibe. With other desserts promising fennel ice cream and cardamom cherries, a glance at the menu feels like a Marvel closing credits bit that compels one to anticipate the future.

    Spudz McKenzie and Beekeeper's Lament

WOW. I'm speechless. Here to talk mostly about the Spud McKenzie. We were stuck between ordering this or the special spinach & artichoke square pizza and man are we happy we chose the potato pie. Flavors are insane - potato, buttermilk, cheese, scallion, bacon just insane. It's so good and I'm SO glad I got to experience it. Will be thinking about that pizza for the rest of my life. Beekeepers Lament also fire but to me was a classic. Can't go wrong with it. Great pizza but overshadowed by the wow factor of the Spud.

It's been awhile since I've been here. But again I have to say it was phenomenal. The staff was great and the food was beautifully done. The decor was so open it was inviting and family friendly. We got the Beekeepers lament and the date cake. Un real it's to die for. And a great Bloody Mary.

After several visits to Asbury Park throughout the past few years, my husband and I finally made it to Talula's, and I'm kicking myself for not checking it out sooner. It's such a delicious experience. The pizzas are so well executed, and I really appreciate the thought and care that they put into their specialty pies. We shared the Super Mario and the Beekeeper's Lament, and both were so tasty! Their crust is the perfect texture: crispy and chewy yet light and airy. The service was also fantastic, and everyone was really sweet to our dog (who sat with us at a table outside). I will definitely be back and can't wait to sample more of their menu.

Favorite pizza in nj!!! Everything was so fresh and delicious and slices are HUGE. I went during lunch on an off peak day so it was pretty empty and we got our food fast but normally you would need a resy Also just love having an excuse to go to asbury park, it's a must visit when in the area

We took a day trip to Asbury Park over Labor Day weekend, and planned dinner at Talula's after seeing it pop up on my Insta. I love all things sourdough and Talula's uses a homemade sourdough for their pizzas, plus they're very vegetarian and vegan friendly. Clearly, Instagram's algorithm is working. I ordered the Esquites pizza, which was truly unlike any pizza I've had. It's essentially Mexican style corn on a white pizza, which may sound strange, but is actually a delicious flavor bomb that I almost single handedly polished off. Despite eating almost an entire pizza, I (obviously) still had room for dessert. Their dessert menu has since changed, but we ordered a chocolate cake with a caramel sauce that was slightly too sweet and overpowering. Their fall dessert menu looks amazing though and even includes a vegan cream pie! They also have a good selection of regular and seasonal cocktails plus a wine list that includes reasonably priced natural options. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Cocktails and pizza were spectacular. The vegan Caesar salad is a must. Service was great- we walked in and opted for an hour wait rather than a high top immediately. We got a text within 35 min for a cute inside table. Loved everything about this place.

Great little pizza place tucked in the "downtown" of asbury. A spacious restaurant that offers a variety of different things but their pizzas are the go to's & best sellers. Snagged a last minute table on Resy & was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the pizza is and got great the staff treated me. A family friendly restaurant that seems to get really packed for dinner thur-Sat. I may have overheard someone say bar is usually for walk in's. So if you want a table make sure to get a reservation. Tried the Marge with pepperoni & burrata & it was delicious. The marinated olives were a miss for me. The tree leche was ok, lacked moisture but the blueberry compote was a nice touch. Would definitely visit again in the future.

When I told the Millennial Chum that I wanted to try this place, her reaction was a shrug and an "it's okay." Yup. Accurate. We came here for lunch yesterday on a nippy December afternoon, which somehow still required several minutes of searching for a parking spot in downtown Asbury. Even when you're visiting at the least beach town friendly time of year, you can't keep Asbury down. Despite several open tables, we were told that none were available (we were naughty and didn't make reservations - a true adventure) and had to sit at the bar. It looked like a few of those tables ended up becoming occupied later on in our meal, and again, any issues in this regard are on us for not calling ahead for the reservation. I decided to get the Ginger Hot Toddy and a Margie w/ the $6 burrata/garlic chip add-on. The drink was mediocre at best, and its only selling point was the temperature. It came with a tea bag, which isn't mentioned in the description and honestly would have likely been a dealbreaker if I'd known ahead of time since I wasn't in the mood for the steeping drama that comes with it, along with a strange chewable ginger garnish. The main problem with the cocktail is that it contains a lot of lemon and ginger, and not enough honey and bourbon; the overall taste profile is overwhelmingly sour, which for me took away from the drink. Not really getting the thought behind any part of the execution there. The pizza was honestly a little underwhelming, which it shouldn't be for the price. It wasn't bad but the direct/obvious comp for me is the buffalo mozzarella pie at Fresco Da Franco's in Montclair, which is excellent and actually cheaper than this option. The key to that one at least is that about 10 or 15 seconds before the pizza is done, they quickly add the mozzy to warm it up. I don't know if the burrata just doesn't have the consistency or structure to do that, but it's not great to just have this random hunk of cold cheese in the middle of the pizza - definitely wouldn't bother with the add-on again. The garlic chips were fine, but it just felt like they were trying too hard to add flavor to a pie that should have already been fine in that regard. Wasn't impressed, and the crust might have been the best part. For what it's worth, the Millennial Chum got some type of brussels sprout salad and enjoyed it. She is welcome to write a more positive review if she has the time. As a pleasant palate cleanser, I got the chocolate gelato, which was as delivered and a nice portion. Initially I side-eyed it thinking I'd just spent $9 on a miniscule hunk of ice cream but given how heavy/rich gelato is, I think it was the perfect size. Maybe don't go so aggressive on the sea salt on the top, since it's difficult to mix in so you end up with one or two really salty bites and that's it, but that's arguably a nitpick. The service was the most disappointing aspect of this experience, and a surprising one given that we were at the bar, where you may sacrifice a little comfort but should make up for it on the hospitality side. Our bartender/waitress was just not very good. She was not personable - she literally didn't smile the entire time we were there and seemed legitimately annoyed in fact when we decided to order dessert, literally writing down what we wanted and walking away with no comments - and rarely stopped by to check in. There were a decent number of customers throughout the restaurant/bar, but I would not say it was packed or crazy in any sense. She was just very slow and deliberate with no sense of urgency. It took a long time for her to come by to take our orders initially, and it was unfortunately a pattern throughout lunch. We almost bypassed dessert because of it, and probably would have if we were on any type of schedule. Maybe we caught her on an off day, but compared to her co-workers, who all moved with a sense of purpose, it stuck out and marred the experience. Overall, the Millennial Chum got this right. I've been to much better places in Asbury. I'd probably come back but for sure I would avoid the bar area, and I'd likely check out the availability of a few other nearby spots first.

Newarker pizza with the most delicious vodka sauce
    Renata G.

If you're in Asbury Park, carve out time for Talula's. It's an unpredictably supreme pizza experience that hits all the right notes--killer crust, gourmet toppings, fun drinks, and an outdoor scene that's both relaxed and lively. Came here after a toasty beach day..with a worked up appetite. There were both indoor and outdoor tables available right away but we went with outdoor to continue soaking up the sun. There are no umbrellas or roof so no shade! Beware. But it's perfect for people watching:) We tried the Newarker pizza. The sourdough crust is just perfect. Vodka sauce absolutely delectable. I didn't expect it to be THAT good. I'm one of those people that leaves the crust behind and this time not a crumb left. Mostly because we got meatballs and I was dipping the crust in the leftover marinara sauce. On point! Drink wise, they have such a wide variety of options. I was very happy for a healthy tonic. I'll choose that over soda any day. Not many pizza restaurants have as robust of a drink menu as Talula's. 5 stars for that, and 5 stars all around. Must come back!!

This place SLAPS! We waited about 2 hours for a table which sucked but it's so worth it. It's also in the best location you can go grab a drink elsewhere while you wait. I finally got to try Talula's GF pizza dough and boy this did not disappoint one bit. If you put this side by side with a regular pizza you'd never tell the difference. Would highly highly recommend the beekeepers lament and the gin and jam cocktail.

    Brianna W.

The Gin and Jam drink is to die for. The space is tight but they make it work well. Lovely staff and great food. I get the Beekeeper's Lament and Rocket pizza every single time. Cozy vibe and a cute beach town aesthetic that never disappoints.

Right now they have a tiki theme, however, that's it in my opinion as far as draw to keep going there. The drinks are an overpriced smoke screen for people who want to waste money on a sugary drink. And it goes along with the whole Asbury Park eclectic vibe but most of the drinks have a 5 or more ingredients I never heard of (which is fine) but it waters down the drink. I don't want to have a drink (or pay $15+ for a drink) that tastes like a fruity cup of juice. As far as the limited food suggestions on the menu- only 2 or 3- this is the third time we've been there and they said they were out of food -so then take it off your menu if you can't be consistent!!! We're not just going to keep drinking without anything to eat to go along with it. As far as the service it's inconsistent, when we sat down there was only two of us- The server was very nice but we waited too long for our drinks. A party of 7 came in about 1/2 hour after us and they had their drinks within 5 minutes- that should never be. After one drink we got the check and we left, we are completely scratching it off our list, we will not return there. It does bum me out because it has such potential and there's nothing like it around but I'm not going to visit an establishment where I walk away feeling it was a waste of money.

The restaurant was located in a multi-floor home on Wesley Lake, just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of Cookman Avenue. The first floor was more of a bar and lounge, and they had a live jazz band on the evening we visited. We checked in with the hostess and were escorted up to the second floor dining room, which was a charming spot that was breezy and comfortable, yet refined. The floor also had its own bar. Our server was on top of things, but was also clearly newer to the place. Regardless, once we got settled, she took our drink orders, which had taken us some time to decide on since the menu was creative and vast. I went with A Sidecar Named Desire, which included Courvoisier VSOP, Cointreau, Chinola passionfruit liqueur, and fresh lemon juice. I adore passion fruit and had always liked sidecars as well, so I figured it was worth a try, and I loved it! It had a good balance of tart sweetness and smokiness. My friend similarly enjoyed her spicy margarita, and we both imbibed while picking on some bread and herb butter. For our meal, we decided to start by sharing the Greek Salad, which was a massive bowl of romaine topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, red onions, and Kalamata olives. We left off the feta cheese, but enjoyed the seasoned dressing made of red wine vinegar, honey, salt, oregano, and olive oil. It was a fresh and flavorful mix of vegetables that was a pleasure to eat. The entree options were endless and offered something for everyone. I wound up going with the Chilean Sea Bass, which was served over sweet onions and potatoes in a tomato herb reduction. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked. It was a light and tasty dish that seemed perfect for the Spring season. After our meals we were a bit too full for dessert, but we decided to get a second round of drinks, mainly because I was dying to try their Pistachio Espresso-Tini. Wow, was that drink delicious! It blended Ketel One Vodka, Mozart White Chocolate Liqueur, natural pistachio flavor, and fresh espresso. The coffee notes were not super prevalent, but the creaminess, nuttiness was the real highlight. It was a decadent way to end a delicious meal. After we settled the bill and headed downstairs, I noticed several bowls of after-dinner mints, which were a nice touch. From the relaxed atmosphere to the interesting and expansive menu, Moonstruck was a terrific option for our Asbury dinner experience.

Our server, Michael, provided by far the worst service we've ever received. He appeared to be under the influence of something, as he spent long periods simply standing around making odd faces while our table and several others waited and waited for him to acknowledge us. We were left wondering if anyone was going to take care of us. When my husband politely asked about our meal, Michael became rude instead of apologetic or helpful. The food itself had good flavor, but it arrived cold, like it was not served right away, which was disappointing. To end the meal, we ordered a cappuccino, but it was so poorly made that it tasted like nothing but warm milk. It was completely undrinkable. What makes this especially disappointing is that I've always loved Moonstruck. It's been one of my favorite restaurants because of its excellent food and outstanding service. If this is the level of service the new owners are willing to accept, I worry about the restaurant's future. I truly hope management addresses these issues because Moonstruck has always been top notch!

They provide alcoholic and non alcoholic mocktails for those of us not interested in consuming liquor.....the mocktails are fantastic. The only thing that made me rate 4 instead of 5 stars was the staff needs a bit of work on serving. We ordered an appetizer and were also given two additional small plates since we were sharing this item. When we were done with the appetizer our specialty sushi plates were bought out and the same server left the three empty plates from the appetizers on the table instead of removing them. Dessert was absolutely decadent and moist (I omitted the whipped cream since I don't like it) but the shortcake was perfect without it. I look forward to returning to Taka and trying more items on the menu.

LATE NIGHT STOP!! Work compete, hungry, need to relax…read morebefore heading back to MD. Found this spot open with a late night bar and grill. Now what I will say is make sure you have your cash ready this is a cash only establishment which is not bad at all what you saw as a price is what you paid. Plus the specials that they had were cash only as well and they were worth the bucks. Nothing was too expensive great pricing I don't think I saw anything over $20. Plenty of drink options in the best little glasses that are complimentary of Ball, if you are familiar. As we arrive we met this really nice security guy super cool even came to check in on us at some point through the night an amazing bartender super cool great conversation great tattoos. Sorry I was tired so I didn't get a name but when you see him you will know it. So we did a little late night dipping and dabbing just got something light sweet chili wings perfectly cooked perfect flavor and adjust the right amount of sauce with the freshest celery and carrots! My partner was looking for something heavy so he indulged in the burger and the sweet tater w Pico queso. Delicious .. We remember seeing this place over the summer and all we remembered was a lot of people standing outside so we didn't realize what the bar was but this weekend we stopped in and were pleasantly surprised we will definitely be back and looking forward to it!
