MANASQUAN: Squan Tavern has been a staple in town since the 1960's and is a local and tourist favorite ever since then. A few blocks from the beach and right in the downtown area, they offer dog friendly seasonal outdoor seating and serve up Italian food and drinks from a full bar. We spent a beautiful day sitting under the tent and it was very comfortable and full of tables. The pasta with marinara sauce and a glass of wine really hit the spot and was so fresh and delicious. The service was fast and friendly too. A five minute drive away is Fisherman's Cove Conservation Area where dogs can be on-leash on the east-side of the beach at the Manasquan Inlet. read more

The restaurant has a neighborhood jive; noisy and filled with diners who in all likelihood knew each other. The food is basic Italian and well prepared. However, with the many choices of Italian fare at the shore, this would not be at the top of my recommendation list. read more

This place has been in the same location since 1964. It is a testament to longevity, but, you need to be careful on what you order. First, the inside has not changed at least in the last 20 or so years. That is not a bad thing, the place is neighborhood nice. The service is very good, whether you are at the bar or in the dining room. The last time I was here the pizza was very good, but the marinara is too acidic and slightly bitter. So, I had a pizza, which was excellent, thin crust and flavorful. The pasta fagioli was all pasta, just a few beans, and much too much garlic that overpowered the tomato base. Then the absolute worst was the shrimp francese. The shrimp were over cooked and the francese sauce was a watery totally flavorless mess. Totally without lemon, wine and olive oil. If you cannot make it correctly, it should be taken off the menu. The cook should see below for a recipe: 1 pound large raw shrimp (14 to 16), peeled and deveined, tails on 3 large eggs (beaten) 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (preferably on a Microplane) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging) 1/2 cup chicken broth 1/2 cup white wine 2 lemons (1 juiced and 1 sliced) 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil (plus more as needed) 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (plus more as needed) ¼ cup fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves (packed ) So, to sum it up: come only for pizza. read more

First time here this past weekend. As we heard it gets crowded , we got there by 5:30pm. Saw a few seats available at the bar but we decided to get a table/booth. Nice that the wait staff came over promptly. I opted for ice tea but they had a full bar available with several craft beers on tap. The menu is quite extensive - primarily Italian. We decided to split a burrata salad & the hot pot pizza (medium)- toppings were pepperoni, hot honey & hot peppers. Table was served bread while we waited for the food. The bread was the BOMB! Crusty outside and soft , tasty inside. Even brought home 2 pieces that we didn't finish - a first for us. Burrata salad served with tomatoes & arugula- balsamic & white vinegar along with oo on the table for the salad. Nice touch was that the tomatoes were ever so slightly seared. Pizza was delicious also, if you like thin crusts, and we do. Very generous with the toppings. Cooked just tight so the bottom did not get soggy from the toppings. Lots of pizzas to choose from as well as many main dishes, if pizza was not in your thoughts. I'm looking forward to our next visit but will have a tough time making a choice as I think you can't go wrong at the Squan Tavern! read more

Yum, can't wait to return. Came here early afternoon on a summer Friday. Place was busy, but not packed. We got seated at a table for 5 right away. Our server was friendly and attentive. The pizza was thin crust and tasty. I had the Squan salad and chicken nicole. The salad was good, but loaded with olives and chickpeas. I would get a regular house salad next time. The chicken nicole was tasty (garlic butter sauce) but the chicken could have been pounded flatter. Eggplant rollitini was a nice size and my husband enjoyed his shrimp parmigiana. Ate here for the first time tonight, a Friday. It was very busy with diners as well as take out orders, but we didn't need to wait too long to get a table. As we observed so many people with pizza, we decided to give it a try and ordered the Deluxe Pizza which had sausage, peppers and mushrooms. It was delicious! The crust was thin and crisp. The sauce was delicate and just right! The toppings were plentiful but didn't weigh down the pizza. Our server was attentive and polite. There was outdoor seating available too. My only issue was that the bar was too small! We love to sit at a bar to eat and drink but it was packed and not enough seats for everyone who would like to be there. But, I guess they were limited in space so we'll just have to go there in an "off time"! We will definitely go back to this family owned tavern. read more

We came in on a Friday night and there was a 45 minute wait. We luckily scored some stools at the bar and had a few drinks. My friend was somewhat unnerved that they have carpeted floors. The more I thought about it I began to think yeah maybe not the best for a restaurant. We were seated at a booth and had the most amazing server and I cannot remember her name. I'll update if it comes to me. We started with calamari which was tender and the sauce was good. The bread was warm and we devoured it. We ordered 2 pizzas... one cheese and one Starting Six which had sausage, peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni, meatballs, and onions. They were both very good. What else is there to say about Squan Tavern that hasn't already been said. My family and I ordered a few pies from our go to spot the other night. Hint: they did NOT disappoint! Walking into Squan Tavern you know it's gonna be the old school kind of Italian restaurant you're gonna love. A quaint older bar room welcomes you upon entry and then continues on into the dining room. This place is always packed; one of the best signs of a good restaurant is good traffic flow. As for the pizzas themselves and if I may quote Dave Portnoy, the crisp is absolutely TO DIE FOR. Whatever they do with their dough and sauce recipes, don't change a thing and tell no one! Perfect under carriage on all pies with the perfect crisp. I'd describe this pizza as a mix between bar pie and a classic NY slice. You have a choice of minestrone soup or house salad with the lunch specials. The shrimp parmigiana was very well prepared and the sauce was flavorful. My friend ordered the chicken parmigiana and he enjoyed it very much. We all loved the complimentary bread as well. Very fresh and hot of the oven. The staff were so nice and very accommodating. Went last Friday. Party of 7. We waited 30 minutes or so. Place was packed for off season. We grabbed a few beers from bar.
