Talula's was festively decorated for the holidays! I was meeting a group here of 6 here and several were late and 1 was a no-show. Our server was so patient and understanding. We started with the beekeepers lament pie. The sopressata was so crispy! I sometimes worry that these types of toppings would make for a greasy pie but this wasn't the case at all. I was in town for 2 days and researched the local restaurant scene before arriving. I settled on Talula's because they pickle and ferment everything in house - Calabrian chiles, Sourdough, Pastrami, you name it. I like it so much that I came back a second night. The first night I went in for happy hour, sat at the bar and had a couple Gin and Jam drinks for $7. Very refreshing. I wanted to try the pizza but since there were so many other things I wanted on the menu I settled on the Naked Pizza with a side of house hot sauce. It's essentially like a Mediterranean-ish garlic bread that you rip and dip into the sauce. I wish I could describe the sauce but it's so unlike anything I've had - so flavorful and complex. Hopefully on my next visit they'll have it for sale in bottles. I also had the warm marinated olives and and a vegan caesar salad. Fried capers on the salad were a nice touch. 10/10 The next night I ordered Shaved Brussels and Fermented Chili Carbonara to go. The maple mustard dressing was sweet and tangy, perfectly complementing the shaved parmesan. The carbonara is made with hand-cut ramen, which essentially leaves out the egg from a traditional noodle. Since there's egg in carbonara it's a downright brilliant idea. Executed perfectly with the house fermented chili paste. A very comforting dish. This is quite possibly the best food I've had in the 50 or so times I've been to NJ. I'm definitely coming back for the sandwiches and pizza. read more

Came here for a casual weekend lunch and it reminds me of austrailian brunch places you can find in NYC but without the long waits and city traffic. Sitting outside was refreshing and I liked it a lot more than the inside, which is a first for me. The food, service, and ambiance were so nice I'd like to come here again for dinner or breakfast. This was my first time coming here, and I can honestly say I'm very excited to come back. I'm sad I didn't get the chance to sit and dine in. We ordered the pizza here to go. We ordered a rocket pizza, and it was yummy. I have a very high bar for pizza because I'm big on New York pizza. This place has that crispy pizza with the right amount of char. I really liked it. The gouda on the rocket is subtle yet delicious. The lime and the arugula add that freshness factor that ties it together, in my opinion. My only criticism is that it could do with less arugula. At times, it can take over the pizza. Regardless, it's great pizza overall. The service was okay. We ordered our pizza 30 mins out, and we still had to wait another 15 minutes when we got there. I got to say, I come from a great pizza town (Detroit) where we are known for delicious square, deep dish with the most wonderful sauce but I think I have found a new obsession: sour dough pizza. We were in a group of 8 so we ordered a few different pies (oh that's right, east coast speak) so we could try different styles. First of all, let me say I was immediately intrigued by the 4 hour tomato sauce. Why does it take four hours? does it cook out the acidity more and give it a smokier taste? Or does it increase the acidity? Well come to find out it balances out the sugar and acidity, who knew? (Well I guess it's commonly known but ok, whatever). It brings out the umami flavor... like I even know what umami is?!!? But come to find out I love it. So the pizzas we ordered: Margie: obviously a version of a margherita which is usually one of my faves anyway. New Yorker: three types of cheeses (gouda, mozzarella and provolone I believe) Nduja: like a spicier chorizo pizza plus pepperoni and pepperoncini. Sweet and spicy all in one. Beekeeper's Lament: honey, some sort of ham type and mozzarella then the White pizzas: I'm a Really Fungi: Mushroom pizza obvi Birria: shockingly interesting take on a taco pizza except not a taco pizza. It was a deconstructed birria taco and oddly worked. Midwinter Lemon Aid: by far the most unique pizza I've ever had. Vegan BBQ Show: Shockingly good! Normally I don't like vegan cheese but this was... what was the word I used... shockingly good! Now I'm not going to lie, put cilantro on almost anything I will give it a positive review, so maybe take me enjoying with a grain of cilantro. We also ordered the Vegan Caesar, but i don't want to bring the convo down with salad talk (but it was awesome). Talulah's is a farm to table pizza restaurant. All the ingredients are in season and fresh. The dough has a nice chew to it and is perfectly cooked. We had the mustard and cheddar pizza and the smoked mushroom pizza. I loved the mustard and cheddar pizza! It was very unique. Under the layer of cheese it had a layer of Dijon mustard, and it was topped with kale and apples. The smoked mushroom pizza was very good! It was topped with potatoes, goat cheese, and fontina cheese. It wasn't as cheesy as the mustard and cheddar pizza. That's another reason I preferred the mustard and cheddar better. All the desserts are house made even the ice cream. I had the apple cider donut cake which was AMAZING! The cake was so moist and layered with salted apple pie filling. Drove 50+miles to celebrate my birthday. Food and service were both lukewarm. Waiter took the wrong order. I had asked for the Newarker with toppings but got the Margie. I didn't notice because of the toppings (arugula) and not to mention all the pizzas were too salty. The other was Buffalo cauliflower which was just salty + vinegary. When I mentioned it to the waiter that he got the wrong pizza when paying the bill, his response was 'Okay. You need change?'. We wanted to eat inside, but the music was ridiculously loud so we ate outside, which wasn't awful because it was a beautiful evening. There were several items on the menu that had sold out, which was disappointing. The pizza looked ridiculously overpriced, so I opted for the kale salad, which was OK, but nothing to write home about. Delicious brunch! Came here on a freezing Sunday and didn't know what to expect. We were seated without reservations thankfully and were impressed by the thoughtful menu. Although known for its pizzas there were various options of biscuits and other brunch fare. We went with their brunch specials of lamb and fennel pizza. It was delicious! This is our 4th time coming and despite the 1.5hr of driving we always get super excited to eat here. This time we came for lunch which offers slightly simpler menu. We ordered kimchi grillee cheese with fried egg and their seasonal and limited peach pizza. Grilled cheese (4/5) was surprisingly just ok. Kimchi flavor was very subtle not spicy at all which might be appealing to many and provided a slight hint of sweetness. It was not greasy and not too cheesy either. Sourdough was perfectly crunchy as well. Only reason i gave 4 is because the first order came without the egg and we had to wait for another sandwich to be made. Pizza (5/5) OMG this pizza was mindblowingly good!! Slices of sweet Jersey peaches worked really well with housemade mozzarella, garlic and jalapenos. It was sweet, savory, and slightly spicy and hint of fresh garden with their herbs. Im so glad we ordered this new limited pizza rather than sticking to our usual, Beekeeper's lament which is just amazing. We were full to the max but decided to get their limited peaches and cream tres leches cake to finish off the meal. 5/5!! It was def a fresh and less sweet version of the usual super sweet tres leches! Talula's version is with olive oil sponge cake and mascarpone whip and of course with jersey peach. We went for dinner, and we all were so disappointed with the food. First, the waitress was awful- standing around talking and not checking on our food for long periods. She said they were out of sourdough so that they couldn't get the ricotta app. (But it came with our meatball app that she could do with other breads). But we went with the flow. Let's talk about the meatballs, which we all generally love. They weren't good. I personally couldn't eat them, and they had pieces of red pepper in them so that I wouldn't order them again. Mozzarella sticks were coated with heavy breadcrumbs and panko- nothing special. We tried two pizzas- they were ok. Service was awful- but I think it was primarily due to our MIA server as others had to pitch in on the LONG lulls waiting- while other customers came in after us and got all of their food way before ours. They unexpectedly added honey to the olive oil -- it was a super unique flavor/combination that I've never had before. The housemade sourdough was the bomb. Entrees: the Margie (red sauce, fresh mozz, olive oil, basil, sea salt) and the famed Beekeeper's Lament (red sauce, hot calabrian soppressata, fresh mozz, honey). Totally worth the hype.
