Sun Design delivers exactly what they promise. We live in a wonderful neighborhood, but our family room was only 11 feet wide. It felt claustrophobic and left little room for family activities or entertaining. A few of our neighbors had hired two other builders to remodel their homes. Knowing well that construction was going to be disruptive to our daily lives, we weren't sold on hiring the other companies. Prior to the pandemic, we worked with Sun Design to remodel our bedroom wing: three bedrooms and two baths became three bedrooms with two and a half baths. The design team listened to our ideas and needs, and we had a wonderful working relationship. The build crew, headed by our project manager, was terrific. We had weekly progress meetings, open and candid conversations, and were delighted that the project started and ended timely. And then we were thrilled with the couple of years of follow up to be sure that everything was still working well. Pay attention to the "$$$" in their Yelp header. We inquired about a kitchen remodel and, during a pre-screen telephone call, after providing my budget and high-level description of the project, was politely informed that their kitchen remodels typically run $75K-$90K. This was above our budget and they, again politely, offered to refer to me to a "lower-cost" provider. This is, of course, their prerogative to position themselves as a higher-end firm that only takes higher-end jobs but to provide the quote sight unseen as to the dimensions of the space, the type of work that would need to be done, struck me as a bit hoity-toity. I'm probably doing their screener a favor by saying this: don't bother inquiring unless you have a generous budget. read more

Had an initial phone appointment to discuss a modest renovation (kitchen, custom closet) Roger in sales. It was rather obnoxious and unpleasant. First Roger warned me that any job will take 5-6 months to begin. Then he jumped into how expensive sun design's LEAST EXPENSIVE kitchen renovation job ran which was $150,000. All of this was to warn me in 5 minutes that he was looking for a super wealthy client with a 200k plus budget to even justify speaking to them. The phone scheduler told me that I could get one intial consultation in the property for redesign ideas to see if there was even a connection or if I felt Sun Design had ideas that I even liked. The consultation never happened. In fact the scheduler lady was fabulous and classy. Roger killed any interest in the company. He made it all about how much money he could get as the priority. I prefer a warmer, less predatory company where people are the priority. being rude about middle class incomes and their hard earned budgets is a turn off. read more

This business is very strange! They advertise screened porches so I called to schedule someone to come out to give us an estimate. They told me that they needed to ask me some questions so they could send out the right person. They started asking me how long I lived in the house,; how many people live there, do I have a wife; what's her name; do I have children, and what are their ages, etc. When I asked what any of this has to do with building a 20 x 20 screened porch, I was told it's important that they get to know me. When i pushed back as to why that was important on the initial call, they said bc we want to know if you need 300k worth of finishes or something simple. When I asked if they had built screened porches with $300k worth of finishes, the lady said no but you never know. The conversation was so uncomfortable, I had to end it. I ended up calling Jendell in Potomac,. They were much easier to communicate with about the project. read more

Live in a modest house. Sun Design stated that the lowest cost kitchen they will do is 65,000 and that is considered bottom of the line. Our house does not need nor should it have a $65,000-100,000 kitchen. Sales (project management) was insistant and showed us many beautiful kitchens, but none that would meet our budget or requirements. Have discovered that Sun is only an upscale design/remodeler, and really is higher priced than a lot of equally qualified organizatons who have the same designations from many organizations. The design team was willing to work within our budget, but not the project manager.... Looked through their cabinet samples, they did not have any maple, or oak. All were quite high end (I want quality, but not necessarily top of the line.) sun was not interested in what I wanted, really interested in doing projcet their way (you will be happy when we finish. ) This is not acceptable to us. read more

I was so pleased with the result and how they managed their three year guarantee that I hired them again in the fall of 2015. This time they did two bathrooms, the garage and various other odds and ends, including some outside work and replacing all the floor coverings in my lower level. The designers, Erika and Morgan were great. They continued to help me throughout the project after the initial design had been approved. Fahad, the project manager on site, did a great job. My husband and I worked with Sun Design on a complete kitchen renovation for our 1991 home. There were several unique challenges including: shortening a wall, creating a pass-through on a load-bearing wall, closing an access doorway, relocating all of the utilities, expanding the electrical capacity and removing an intrusive bulkhead. We hired Sun Design to remodel the kitchen, which is the main project. Our family room, laundry room and basement were also renovated at the same time simultaneously. The whole project took almost 3 1/2 months for completion. From the start to the completion of the project, we were very happy during the duration of the renovation. Expensive, be wary. We had Sun Design give us an estimate for a modest update to our very small master bathroom in Alexandria. I'm talking new tile in the shower and on the floor. They wanted $2,200 up front for "design work" even though the only "designing" involved expanding the shower stall by 9 inches. The shocker, though, was the estimate: $31k-$43k! Aside from the enormous range, it was four to five times more than what the other contractors (all reputable, licensed and experienced) bid. It was bizarre. The estimate was so divorced from reality that I can only assume that they didn't want our business because the project wasn't big enough. read more

After six months of researching home remodelers in the Northern Virginia area, we decided to contract with Sun Design. We live in a 4 bedroom colonial and wanted an open concept with a new kitchen. We based our decision to go with Sun Design on several factors such as affordability, quality of work, professionalism and experience of design team, friendliness of staff, and recommendations of past clients. We attended several of Sun Design's free monthly seminars that we found very informative in educating us in their remodeling process. In addition, we attended many of their Open Houses at local homes that Sun Design had remodeled. There we had the opportunity to talk first hand to the home owners and see the excellent quality of work. . All Sun Design clients were very satisfied with their remodel and the Sun Design team. As far as cost, we gave Sun Design a dollar amount that we had budgeted for the remodel and they successfully stayed within those limits. We were impressed and delighted with all the checks and balances Sun Design provides to insure a quality product to their client. We were shown how to go on line and create an electronic photo album of all the design features we wanted in the remodel. Then the design team used this album to build a 3-D model of what our home would look like when completed. Changes could be made right up until the construction started. This feature was very helpful in visualizing what the finished remodel would look like. Sun Design projected 2 months for the completion of the remodel and they met their deadline. The weekly walk throughs with the project manager were a great feature because we had weekly opportunities to actually see the work . We also appreciated Sun Design's 3 year warranty on all work completed in the remodel. Sun Design showed us that redesigning our existing space created better function, flow, and light in our home without adding more square footage. Sun Design performed a remarkable remodel for our house involving turning a dated split foyer into a contemporary two story design by building an addition onto the front of the house. The result was both functional and aesthetically beautiful inside and out.
