A few days later, his workers showed up, unannounced, asking what they needed to do. I told them I have no idea, and my husband is not home, and to coordinate a time with him. A few days later (on a Sunday), they showed up unannounced again! My husband was out again! They asked me to pick a paint color and I asked if that is included in the price we were quoted and they said they didn't know. As I was trying to figure that out, it came out that they don't think repairing the stairs is a good idea and they can't even guarantee they won't break again for even 3 days. I asked if it would be a lot more expensive to redo the whole thing and they said it would be exponentially more expensive. I told them we'll talk to Alex and get back to them. 30 minutes later, Alex calls my husband screaming at him! He told him that we shouldn't ask his contractors about prices and that he doesn't work that way and that we should find someone else to work with and hung up the phone on my husband! He was literally screaming at my husband on the phone. And then hung up on him. There are so many issues with our experience starting with the fact that the workers kept showing up without prior notice and asking a lot of questions as if they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. And then of course the fact that he was trying to scam us into doing something that he knew might not even last the week. And then finally, calling my husband and screaming at him and hanging up on him because his workers were asking us a lot of questions?! It's just been an atrocious experience. I recommend avoiding him at all costs. UPDATE: Alex is now threatening my husband over text messages because of our review. We are just stating facts. He said we are inappropriate to contact him on a Sunday when it was his contractors who showed up at our doorstep, unannounced, on a Sunday, and we were just calling to clear things up with him because they had no idea what they were supposed to do and were asking me a lot of questions. He also accused us of trying to strike a deal with his subcontractors, something that didn't cross our minds for one second. We were just trying to figure out if the paint his contractors were making me choose was included in the estimate he provided us.

Lofft was not the cheapest estimate I received but based on my meeting with Alex and previous reviews, I decided to hire them for my work. Very happy with my decision. The project began and ended exactly on schedule. Eric and Freddie were easy to work with, dependable, did a fantastic job and kept the worksite clean during the project. Tran, the Northwood designer, worked fast and diligently with all the drawings,dimensions,selections of cabinets,counter top,tiles,etc. We texted Tran very late in the evening or weekend with our concerns, questions. She always replied right away. To her, client's satisfaction is very important. Thumb up for her work. Charlie, the Northwood main staff for my basement project, is a conscientious, knowledgeable and hard worker. He meticulously put in all the needed wood blockings during the framing of the bathroom walls so he could install all the grab bars and the wall hung shower seat. So, as we get older and we must use the grab bars, we will feel safe because they were installed correctly to the blockings behind the walls. Our ALU passed all Fairfax county inspections. Our project was a kitchen remodel and reconstruction of our back kitchen stairs leading to our basement. The remodel involved removing a wall between our old kitchen and dining, replacing the entire kitchen floor and weaving it into existing hardwood, replacement of 90+ year old stairs and reconfiguring our stair landing, installation of a full-house generator, and full replacement of the kitchen cabinets and appliances. Bob and Whitney spent a lot of time at the beginning of process talking and listening to me and my husband about our needs and wants for the new space as well as our expectations for the experience. They were genuinely interested in learning what our priorities were to ensure that their design and budget met our needs. Once we had a working plan for the kitchen and stair designs, Whitney and I met regularly to make product selections and finishes. Following the selections, Bob and Whitney provided us with a final budget and plan. Northwood's over all approach and process make it stand out from other design build firms. Firstly, they do not start work until all of your materials are delivered and in their warehouse. As a result, there are no surprise work stoppages because an item is back ordered or was late in being ordered. Secondly, they have a dedicated project manager for your project during the entire build. From soup to nuts, the same PM will be at your house every day and communicating with you regarding the daily work and upcoming schedule. If a sub-contractor is on-site, your PM will be there facilitating the entire appointment. Thirdly, the quality and professionalism of their sub-contractors is bar none. The electrician is incredible--he is so knowledgeable and really works with the homeowner to troubleshoot potential issues and make sure the final electrical plan really fits the homeowners' needs. The tile installer is an artist. His attention to detail and meticulous cuts really made our backsplash shine. We installed wallpaper on our ceiling and the installers were so gifted. Our house is nearly 90 years old, and the ceilings are not close to being square, but the installers did an amazing job. Finally, the Northwood team are so friendly and genuine you will be sad when the job is finished. It is clear they take a ton of pride in their work and strive to make the remodeling process as smooth as possible. For instance, they provide an induction plate and pots/pans to use during your remodel. We are over the moon in love with the final work product and kitchen. J&E Modern Construction renovated both our unfinished basement and outdoor breezeway of our almost…read more100-year-old rowhouse in NE WASHINGTON, DC. They did a FANTASTIC job! The job included demolition of existing non-weight-bearing walls, new framing, insulation, sheetrock, ceiling; new flooring, doors, windows, overhead lights/wiring; upgrading the stairway to 1st floor; building "mechanical room" for boiler; plus framing, screening, ceiling, tiling back breezeway; installing breezeway fans;; plastering & painting; and other finish work. We did NOT need the full bathroom done; it was already done. We also purchased & J&E installed stackable washer/ventless dryer. The finished basement includes a guest bedroom with private back entrance and private access to bathroom, a small room to be used as a recording studio, hallway/general access to washer/dryer, and small sitting area at base of the steps. Breezeway now provides a screened in patio. Importantly, J&E discovered some structural decay in the brick support pillars and beams/crossbeams at the back of the house in the breezeway and were able to repair the issue quickly and attractively for a reasonable additional fee. While J&E was not the least expensive bid we received, the quality, timeliness, and thoroughness of their work was first rate! Additionally, the communication channels (via WhatsApp) connected all the team leadership easily and efficiently. The response time was speedy. Yair Delayahu spent considerable time assessing the job; his estimates were incredibly detailed & parsed out financially.
