We interviewed 6 different contractors to renovate our basement for aging in place, designated as an ALU( Accessory Living Unit) in Fairfax county. We chose the Northwood construction, Inc. Their fee was reasonable, not the lowest nor the highest. We did not have to pay up to 10K for the designer fees as in other contractors' proposal. Tran, the Northwood designer, worked fast and diligently with all the drawings,dimensions,selections of cabinets,counter top,tiles,etc. We texted Tran very late in the evening or weekend with our concerns, questions. She always replied right away. To her, client's satisfaction is very important. Thumb up for her work. Charlie, the Northwood main staff for my basement project, is a conscientious, knowledgeable and hard worker. He meticulously put in all the needed wood blockings during the framing of the bathroom walls so he could install all the grab bars and the wall hung shower seat. So, as we get older and we must use the grab bars, we will feel safe because they were installed correctly to the blockings behind the walls. Our ALU passed all Fairfax county inspections. We truly appreciate Charlie's workmanship. Our basement project started and finished on time as planned. We are very please with the results. read more

Outstanding service and quality workmanship! From the moment I called Northwood Construction every person we dealt with was incredibly personable, knowledgeable, and focused on our kitchen remodel. Bob Benedict, the owner of Northwood, has an extensive background in construction and is thoughtful in his approach. Whitney Simons is an incredible designer and problem solver when it comes to designing around tricky spaces. She is super organized, has a great design eye, and very responsive to any questions/concerns during your project. Dan Clark was our dedicated project manager and contact throughout construction. You would be hard pressed to find a more conscientious, detail-oriented, thoughtful, and experienced project manager/carpenter. Our project was a kitchen remodel and reconstruction of our back kitchen stairs leading to our basement. The remodel involved removing a wall between our old kitchen and dining, replacing the entire kitchen floor and weaving it into existing hardwood, replacement of 90+ year old stairs and reconfiguring our stair landing, installation of a full-house generator, and full replacement of the kitchen cabinets and appliances. Bob and Whitney spent a lot of time at the beginning of process talking and listening to me and my husband about our needs and wants for the new space as well as our expectations for the experience. They were genuinely interested in learning what our priorities were to ensure that their design and budget met our needs. Once we had a working plan for the kitchen and stair designs, Whitney and I met regularly to make product selections and finishes. Following the selections, Bob and Whitney provided us with a final budget and plan. Northwood's over all approach and process make it stand out from other design build firms. Firstly, they do not start work until all of your materials are delivered and in their warehouse. As a result, there are no surprise work stoppages because an item is back ordered or was late in being ordered. Secondly, they have a dedicated project manager for your project during the entire build. From soup to nuts, the same PM will be at your house every day and communicating with you regarding the daily work and upcoming schedule. If a sub-contractor is on-site, your PM will be there facilitating the entire appointment. Thirdly, the quality and professionalism of their sub-contractors is bar none. The electrician is incredible--he is so knowledgeable and really works with the homeowner to troubleshoot potential issues and make sure the final electrical plan really fits the homeowners' needs. The tile installer is an artist. His attention to detail and meticulous cuts really made our backsplash shine. We installed wallpaper on our ceiling and the installers were so gifted. Our house is nearly 90 years old, and the ceilings are not close to being square, but the installers did an amazing job. Finally, the Northwood team are so friendly and genuine you will be sad when the job is finished. It is clear they take a ton of pride in their work and strive to make the remodeling process as smooth as possible. For instance, they provide an induction plate and pots/pans to use during your remodel. We are over the moon in love with the final work product and kitchen. While we are glad to have a new kitchen, we do miss seeing and talking to the Northwood team. Without any hesitation, I highly recommend for any remodeling project you may have. read more

We've found that Northwood Construction is not "your average construction" company. Here's why: After about 15 years of weather, the four columns on the front of our house badly needed to be replaced. We absolutely hate the prospect of dealing with construction companies and procrastinated to the point that the columns were about ready to collapse. We spent months talking to (and rejecting) various highly-rated construction firms - and then we found Northwood Construction - and we are extremely pleased with both the work and the process. Bob Benedict patiently worked with us to get the exact look we wanted. We were impressed that Bob spent as much time as he did to get the exact look and "low-maintenance" results we wanted. He provided design recommendations and drawings that let us select exactly the style we wanted and he precisely matched the existing paint color of the porch. Don and Chris started and finished all work exactly as they said they would, cleaned up the work site better than it was when work began, and the final price was exactly the price quoted (which we already knew was a good, competitive price). We felt that everyone at Northwood put us first in designing, scheduling, and completing the work - and we could not be happier. We're so impressed with Northwood that we want them to convert our carport into a garage - a project we've put off for years. Our basement flooded due to a sump pump that stopped working. We went from a dry basement w/ up to a few feet of water (up to the legs of our pool table and a man's waist). I called Bob at Northwood and he immediately came over to provide "triage" advise. Subsequently, the Northwood team helped us navigate the basement re-do process, dealing with the insurance company and considering all the options -- including mold and mildew care. Mark and Don were tremendous with the communication of progress, pre and post attention and the work was completed without a hiccup. So pleased with the Northwood team that we recently started a master bathroom renovation with them. We recently purchased an old farmhouse, which had a poorly insulated barroom that we wanted to convert to an in-law suite with private bathroom. We wanted the renovation to stay in the style of the farmhouse look and to make the transition from the original part of the house to the renovated room look seamless. Northwood, with Bob, Don, and Morgan, were exceptional. We could not be happier with the room. Bob was straightforward and clear, from beginning to end. Bob explained that he may be more expensive than other contractors, which we were concerned about. But we stayed with them and are definitely glad we did. The best part of hiring Northwood was getting Morgan and his son, Jonathan. They were professional, courteous, and just wonderful. We were anxious about having people in our house everyday, often when we weren't home, but they quickly earned our trust. Our kids were sad to see them go when the project was done. Morgan always kept us updated, told us what he was doing, and even told us if he needed to step out to go get some supplies during the day. He would tell us if he ran into issues, and objectively told us what our options were (such as finding water damage behind the wall), without ever trying to up sell anything. We'll be sure to hire Northwood again for future projects, with the condition that Morgan does it again. read more

He introduced us to the best subcontractors who guided us in selecting materials to use for our renovations. * Bob has a very calm way of explaining what our options are in moving forward which was paramount during the coronavirus. * We were first impressed by the technology Bob used in showing us what the renovations would look like using a computer program. This tool was amazingly informative b/c we could visualize what the end product would be. * Another technology device Bob used was the co-construction where you could not only discuss issues of the current situation but view the calendar with upcoming dates for each subcontractor, update your change orders and view the financial part of the project. * His staff whom we interacted with composed of Whitney and Dan plus Anthony were extraordinarily helpful. Whitney always found the products needed and guided us in responding to change orders on the computer. Dan is a superb foreman, who coordinated the subcontractors' jobs and made sure everything was done properly. We completed a total renovation of our kitchen in the summer of 2017. We selected Northwood based on a recommendation from family friends. Bob Benedict, the owner, came over to our house, got to know us and our ideas, and sent us a pretty detailed estimate, along with a few layouts for us to consider. His was far and above the most thorough and detailed estimate that we received. During the planning process, Bob personally assisted us with selecting countertops, cabinets, appliances and fixtures. Northwood used software planning tools which Don Claeys updated and which kept us informed of all project steps, including costs, on a weekly basis. The project was completed on time and within budget. Morgan Shorey was the lead on our job, and he was terrific. He is professional, fastidious and highly skilled at what he does. Morgan was excellent at coordinating all the different trades, and the job went very smoothly with minimal delays. We feel that he was totally on our side, as he carefully monitored the different work crews, quality of material, and installation of appliances. We were quite comfortable leaving him in charge of the house on his own. The cabinetry that he installed is seamless and beautiful. It looks like fine furniture! We particularly appreciated the care he took to ensure that minimal dust made it into the rest of the house, and he always cleaned up at the end of the day. After years of dreaming of a new kitchen, and searching for the ideal place to retire, we decided to stay in place and remodel our existing kitchen and update the surrounding areas. We chose Northwood after preliminary meetings with three contractors. Bob Benedict demonstrated patience, knowledge and skill in helping us develop a vision that was customized to perfection. Attention to detail, expert craftsmanship, professional staff and remarkable character - those are the terms I would use to describe the Northwood Construction team! We've had Bob (the owner) and his team do major renovations to two of our homes. The Northwood team created an amazing living space and bedroom in our previous home's basement. One of the things that differentiated Northwood from other contractors is their creative view of construction. Bob made a number of suggestions that we hadn't considered - remove the pole in the middle of the basement, for a much bigger open space and cutting a window next to the walk out for more light. Bob was not upselling; he was exploring options with no pressure. Most recently we had all three upstairs bathrooms redone. A major remodel to the Master Bath and a refresh to the two full baths. Again, the Northwood team presented a number of design ideas that had not occurred to us. Some we embraced and others weren't a good fit, but there was never any pressure either way. The fact that Don (the site supervisor) was onsite every day to manage the expert craftspeople gave us great piece of mind. We knew Don was ensuring that everyone that came into our house "never forgot it was our home". By doing all three at once there was a major disruption to the upstairs, but we saved quite a bit by having the trades quoting a single large job vs. three smaller quotes over time. The craftspeople Northwood uses are experts at their trades - there is no DIY or make due. Besides the top-notch craftsmanship, Northwood was on time and on budget!!
