Jose was the contractor who came out IMMEDIATELY to give a quote, and he was probably one of the most honest contractors I've ever had. He was very careful to indicate that he didn't want to add anything unnecessary to the point where I was like, no no... please tell me all the things that need to be fixed. In fact, I wish we had fixed even more unnecessary parts of the fence, but he cares deeply about the budget and savings and pointed out which things are great to fix now and which can wait. He was incredibly honest. To make matters better, he came in at a lower price than the other quotes I received, AND he was willing to schedule work immediately (pending mandatory utility checks). My house is in Vienna, VA, and his brother Edwin, who partners with him, came out and did most of the work. They work together. His brother is super kind and patient, and even decided to work on a day with temperatures surpassing mid-90s. Pro-tip: Leave out some cold drinks for your contractors on hot days. In fact, they even added a few extra bonus fixes for me since I had a few rotten fence caps, and he made the broken fence posts look perfect. Our yard is an odd shape plus we had had several trees removed so we could put in a privacy fence along one side (but there were still some roots and large privacy 'trees' along the fence line). Universal did such a good job building a new fence while dealing with our remaining trees, the odd shape, plus putting in an oversized new gate and side fencing along each side of the house. They cleaned up after themselves, arrived on time, and gave us the best pricing (I researched extensively and got numerous estimates). We discussed various designs and worked out a great plan.  After letting him know I had a bad experience with an unlicensed contractor Jose put my mind at ease by confirming they are bonded, insured and are a licensed contractor in the state of Virginia (always verify licenses on the DPOR website). Universal Fence did a great job on affordable repair and partial replacement for the 6-foot wooden privacy fence in my back yard. I saw their name and number on some neighbors' new fences so called for an estimate. Jose called me back the same day, and Elder stopped by later that afternoon to take measurements. Jose emailed an estimate that evening for both a very affordable repair and a full replacement option. I went with the repair. They coordinated the call to Miss Utility and we scheduled by email. Universal Fence is hands down the company to use for fencing. Our nearly 20-year-old fence was in desperate need of replacement. Jose gave me an estimate lower than estimates received from three other companies. Even though the quote was more than fair, we had to put off replacement for several months due to budgetary reasons. He was professional, courteous and knowledgeable. We communicated throughout the day and, after my final decision, agreed to sign a contract on the Monday. These guys did a great job. One interesting thing that happened: we had request double fence gates; only one side typically has an easy opening slide piece that locks it in the ground. When I said that I wanted a second one, they sent their guys back out to come and do it even though it wasn't standard. They made an extra visit just for that. The fence looks great! read more
