Jose was the contractor who came out IMMEDIATELY to give a quote, and he was probably one of the most honest contractors I've ever had. He was very careful to indicate that he didn't want to add anything unnecessary to the point where I was like, no no... please tell me all the things that need to be fixed. In fact, I wish we had fixed even more unnecessary parts of the fence, but he cares deeply about the budget and savings and pointed out which things are great to fix now and which can wait. He was incredibly honest. To make matters better, he came in at a lower price than the other quotes I received, AND he was willing to schedule work immediately (pending mandatory utility checks). My house is in Vienna, VA, and his brother Edwin, who partners with him, came out and did most of the work. They work together. His brother is super kind and patient, and even decided to work on a day with temperatures surpassing mid-90s. Pro-tip: Leave out some cold drinks for your contractors on hot days. In fact, they even added a few extra bonus fixes for me since I had a few rotten fence caps, and he made the broken fence posts look perfect. Jose responded quickly to our request for an estimate. He came out, evaluated our project and gave us a very reasonable quote. After get county approval for our project, we had Jose come back out to requote for added scope of work, which he did promptly. Jose is excellent at communicating, and we felt he was very honest and transparent about the project. Once we had HOA approval, Jose was able to schedule his crew to come out within 2 weeks. The crew was exceptionally hardworking, and they did a wonderful job in just 2 days! They even set the fence around a large tree right on our property line that we didn't want to cut down. I can't say enough good things about this company! Jose and his crew were great to work with and they did an excellent job for us! Our yard is an odd shape plus we had had several trees removed so we could put in a privacy fence along one side (but there were still some roots and large privacy 'trees' along the fence line). Universal did such a good job building a new fence while dealing with our remaining trees, the odd shape, plus putting in an oversized new gate and side fencing along each side of the house. They cleaned up after themselves, arrived on time, and gave us the best pricing (I researched extensively and got numerous estimates). We discussed various designs and worked out a great plan.  After letting him know I had a bad experience with an unlicensed contractor Jose put my mind at ease by confirming they are bonded, insured and are a licensed contractor in the state of Virginia (always verify licenses on the DPOR website). When we decided to make some design changes to the plan we reached out and Jose accommodated all of the prospective changes and updated the plan. I saw their name and number on some neighbors' new fences so called for an estimate. Jose called me back the same day, and Elder stopped by later that afternoon to take measurements. Jose emailed an estimate that evening for both a very affordable repair and a full replacement option. I went with the repair. They coordinated the call to Miss Utility and we scheduled by email. On the day the work was scheduled a team of 2 arrived and got right to work. Jose called to discuss one clarification by phone. They checked in a few times, and worked quickly. These guys did a great job. One interesting thing that happened: we had request double fence gates; only one side typically has an easy opening slide piece that locks it in the ground. When I said that I wanted a second one, they sent their guys back out to come and do it even though it wasn't standard. They made an extra visit just for that. The fence looks great! read more
