Part of our side fence was falling apart, and our back fence was dilapidated. We were interested in fencing in the whole yard so our dog could run around freely without danger of getting lost. Stuart Carter was able to come a couple of days after I called for a visit. He assessed the side fence and determined that a few pieces could be replaced and we could thus get a lot more years out of it. He also advised various styles and ways we could fence in the rest. He was friendly, helpful, and prompt. The install day came quickly after, and the only hitch was the work crew's truck getting a flat tire. They were swift and efficient in getting rid of the old fence pieces and putting in the new ones. They ran out of daylight (because of that flat tire in the morning), but came back early the next day (on a Saturday morning, in the snow!) to complete the job. My only ding on the company is for never responding to my initial inquiry, via their website, several weeks prior. By contrast, they were extremely responsive once I talked to them by phone. These guys didn't even get to show up at my house but instead waste my time waiting for them. I called the number and requested an appointment everything was good to go. The next day, Josh called me and said your appointment was done incorrectly so I'll be the one coming to your house, even though I'm not sure I'll come at that time. So I said ok...give me a 2 hour window and I waited. The day he was supposed to come, he never showed up and never called. Daniel called me the same day and said he was supposed to come instead but couldn't make it. I told him Josh already called and was supposed to come but didn't. Extremely poor craftsmanship and customer service. Carter installed a wooden fence for me in 2015 and indicated that their fences last for 10-20 years. Four years later, the fence is rotting and dangerously leaning towards my property. They couldn't explain why this happened and offered to remediate for several hundred dollars, which I naively took them up on. Two months later and the boards have rotted again. Daniel is blunt, straight-faced, and can come off a little irritated, but after receiving several bids for this work I really felt that of everyone I spoke with he seemed the most knowledgable. He seemed like he really knew what he was doing which was important to me. His bid wasn't the lowest but it was reasonable, and I was looking to pay for a quality fence and a quality experience. I'm not sure I really got either. As some of the other people have remarked, communication can be spotty. I left our deposit on my front porch to be picked up and had to follow up after not hearing anything for a week to make sure someone else hadn't stolen the check and to inquire when they planned to start the work. However, they quickly responded and immediately scheduled the work which was great. The crew arrived on time and I appreciated that they spoke to me ahead of time to talk about which plants might be lost when they put the fence in. It was a kind gesture. At about the midday mark I looked outside and realized the fence looked REALLY TALL. We have a small one story house and the fence outside looked huge. I couldn't even see any part of the street it was so tall. We had agreed on a 3.5 to 3 ft scallop cedar picket fence, and I realized they had put in 4 ft posts. In fact, during our initial estimate it was Daniel who raised the issue that a 4ft fence was really tall for a front yard. When I raised the issue I was met with objection that "sorry we already put them in concrete, you're stuck with it." Apparently when Daniel rewrote the contract (to exclude the backyard which we originally considered) he changed the contract to say we wanted a 4 ft fence without my telling him to. I showed him our original contract and he simply stuffed it in his pocket and huffed off. We talked about possible options (including cutting off the gothic finials we PAID for) and Daniel was stern in reinforcing that they would not change the price if they cut off the finials we paid for to accommodate for *their* mistake. He would not change the price if they installed a fence I didn't ask for. He was hostile and irritated that I was asking for the work to be corrected. After some back and forth they agreed to do something... cut the posts? put them back in? I'm not even sure exactly what they did. I asked if it would impact how sturdy or reliable the fence was and was basically met with blank hostile stares. It was as if I had inconvenienced the crew by asking them to perform the work we had agreed upon. Within the first week the spring on the front gate broke. I called and left a message for Daniel but the phone call was never returned. Magically the fence did get fixed (perhaps he stopped by and fixed it?) and it broke again within a week. Now about 6 weeks later the springs on all three gates are broken. One of the planks on the front gate has split down the middle as well. Unfortunately I cannot recommend doing business with this company. read more

We had a fantastic experience with Carter Fence. While we had to wait some time for other companies to come out and give us quotes, Stuart (the owner) came out promptly and had a quote in our mailbox just a day or two later. Once we decided to move forward with him, we requested an expensive upgrade to the design of our fence (trellis on top). Stuart was honest with us that he did not think it would look good due to the uneven nature of our land. That made us immediately trust him, as any vendor who turns down the opportunity to make more money is a keeper. When installation day arrive, his crew was clean, quick, efficient, and diligent. They completed the job over a two day period (we have a big yard!) in a 6' vinyl, privacy fence. Overall I am completely dissatisfied with the work performed. They came out right away to give an estimate. In fairness, they ran pretty cheap compared to their competitors. We decided to give them a shot and are still paying for that decision, unfortunately. I guess my list of complaints is as follows: 1. Part of the fence was installed backwards and they had to come back out to make the repairs. 2. Boards were wet when installed and shrunk, warped and twisted as a result. They had to come back out AGAIN to replace close to 60 boards. Now a couple of years later there is an inch gap between boards in some ares of what was supposed to be a privacy fence. And further boards have, of course, shrunk warped or twisted. 3. Boards were installed without leaving the agreed upon gap between the ground and bottom of the fence to allow for weed whacking and to prevent bowing. Several boards have since bowed, warped or twisted. Some weren't even nailed. 4. Every single gate is a struggle to open because of the inferior hinges they used, the fact the wood has shrunk and split where screwed into allowing the gates to drag on the ground and the fact they did not leave a proper gap between the ground and the bottom of the gates. There are several more things I could point out about the inferior work performed at my home, but these are the main complaints. I wish I could post pictures. All in all, I would avoid this company. read more

Mike Carter is rude and nasty to me on the phone when he failed to show up to replace my fence on the day and time we agreed to via e-mail. When he was 20 minutes late, I called his office (where they hardly ever pick up and you always wind up playing seemingly endless games of phone tag, by the way) and had to leave a message asking where he was. The receptionist called me back within 10 minutes to tell me that she, "has nothing to do with scheduling and there are multiple crews," and that I would need to call Mike directly. So, I called him and left a message saying that it was 9:20, he was 20 minutes late, and that I would have appreciated a phone call to let me know that he was running late. When he called me back shortly thereafter and told me that I was on the schedule for tomorrow the 28th. I chimed in and said, "Yeah, today is the 28th...." He retorted with, "Well, I have you on the schedule for the 28th and you didn't give me your deposit until yesterday." When I paid my deposit, I was NOT told that this would push my work date back by 24 hours. No one communicated this to me by phone or e-mail. So, Mike then told me that he didn't appreciate my tone or attitude when I left my message, "telling me that I am 20 minutes late. I'm doing the best I can." That, sir, would be an excuse. It is not my problem that you got your date's confused and failed to notify me of the scheduling change. That's on you, buddy! He went on to say angrily, "I am happy to give you your money back or I can do the work tomorrow, but you were way out of line with what you said to me." I replied with, "No, actually you are out of line with me right now. So, yeah, you're fired. Give me my deposit back." This man will talk a good game at your estimate, make you a deal whose price tag will lure you in, and then treat you like dirt when he makes a mistake and tries to make it your fault. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Their lack of professionalism, rudeness, passing the blame, customer-shaming, failure to follow-up or confirm receipt of payment of scheduling dates, and then failure to show up at the expected time have permanently lost them mine, my family's and my friends' business, because everyone I know will be told this horror story. Work completed: removed chain link fence, and installed a 6 ft solid board wooden fence. The first call i made was a voice message, and they were extremely prompt about returning my call. i made the appointment to get the original estimate within a couple days. they came out, took all the measurements and gave us the estimate right away. based on what we wanted, and the other barriers in our yard, the Dani recommended that we do solid board instead of board on board since we had several neighbors whose fence line was also really close. plus this was a cheaper option. this was also the cheaper quote we got back. We asked 4 companies total for quotes. After we sent the deposit, they made the appointment right away. they said they would arrive between 9 and 930 am. and they were there RIGHT AT 9 am, and started working to remove the chain link fence right away. they worked fast, and efficient, and had the entire fence up by 2 pm, which is when we did they walk through inspection before handing them the rest of the money. couple things that kept me from giving them an A. I saw on holmes that fence gates are supposed to close automatically due to weight and how you build it. while my gates look great, they dont have the auto-close feature that i was really hoping for. Also, after they left we were taking a closer look at everything, and there were a couple of nail heads that seemed to have not been placed correctly and didnt go all the way through. very minor, and not a lot. overall, they were very professionally, worked really fast, and managed to not kill the flowers near the edge of the yard, which i told them they didnt have to worry about since it was wild flowers anyway. they even filled a hole that our dog dug in the backyard. we've had the fence for exactly one week now, and I love it as do the dogs. there is no way the dogs can get out of the yard so they've been having a lot more freedom to go in and out of the house as they please. read more

I was actually looking forward to working with this company, but unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the customer service. I kept having to follow up on when the project would start, etc. I was told to send a check to a PO Box, which seemed shady, and I didn't hear from anyone for 2 weeks after payment was sent to confirm receipt, follow up about next steps, etc. When I called the main line and left messages, NO ONE called me back (over 3 days). Luckily, I found the number of my contractor, who called me back after a few attempts. If I didn't find his number when I did, I would have cancelled everything. I was also given a start date on a work day, which was pushed back the day of. Not the best customer experience. The 2 stars are for the work.. We hired them to do a 6' privacy fence in the back yard, along with a 4' privacy fence with two gates (one walk-through and one vehicle) in the side yard. Well Mike Carter came out and looked at the fence. He gave me excuses for the issues. He felt that my issues were minor and didn't warrant the review I gave. He agreed to fix the gate, the one section of cap board and one fence panel that was too short. Again he felt the other issues were minor and wasn't going to do anything about them. He just played them off as not a big deal and I was being too picky. While I appreciate that Mr. Carter made a visit to my home, I did not appreciate his attitude that the issues were too minor for him to deal with. As the homeowner and the customer, if I think the issues are a problem, I would assume that any company would want to address them. I can understand, after having him at my house, why others have written the reviews that they have. He was less than ideal to deal with in person. I was prepared to rewrite my review after the work was fixed, but I won't do that after basically being told I needed to change it. read more

There's no point repeating all the glowing remarks others have offered except to say that I'd concur completely, and Carter Fence deserves their high ratings Carter came recommended to me by a contractor. They were top notch from start to finish...and start to finish didn't take very long! My first call was returned within minutes, the very personable (not the least bit pushy) Stuart Carter showed up as scheduled within days and, after walking the property with me, gave me an estimate that was significantly below what I'd received from Long Fence last fall. Days after I returned the contract with a deposit, Stuart called to give me an installation date, less than two weeks out. The four person crew arrived precisely as scheduled and went to work removing the old fence. Stuart stopped by before the new construction began to make sure everything was going well. Six hours later the crew (the very hard-working Tito, Miguel, John, and a helper whose name I didn't get) had finished the job, cleaned up, and were ready to leave. The fence is beautiful. The workmanship is absolutely first class. This fence should last forever...or at least a lot longer than I'm going to be living in the house...and definitely improves the look of the property when it comes time to sell. Carter used ten foot 4x4's so they could sink as much post as possible into the ground before filling the holes with dry concrete. These posts aren't going anywhere soon! The cap and trim finish is so much better looking than the stockade fence that had slowly become an eyesore over the last twenty years Kudos to Carter Fence for a beautiful job, well done. About a year ago, a vehicle damaged our fence in our back yard in Fairfax Station, VA and we hired Carter Fence to replace a 60-foot section. At first, the fence looked like it was well installed. However, within a year the fence started to lean in towards our yard. It became apparent that they did not embed the fence posts into the ground enough. We contacted Carter Fence to report the problem and they refused to repair the fence at their cost, even though it was an obvious installation problem on their end. We had Mike Carter meet us out our property for an estimate on a fence while our house was under construction. Mike was very personable and answered all of our questions regarding the construction process. Upon moving in, we called Carter Fence to move forward with the work. Mike also showed up halfway through the job to check on the progress. The work was done within a day and we were very satisfied with the finished fence.
