When we decided to build an ADU, we had no idea where to start, but working with Marks-Woods Construction was the best choice we could have made. Greg Marks, one of the owners, walked us through what was and wasn't possible with the City of Alexandria's zoning requirements, and explained every step clearly -- a real relief for our first big construction project. His brother Drew Marks, our project manager, visited the site daily, kept everything on schedule, and always kept us in the loop. He responded quickly to every question, and his patience was remarkable. The crew was respectful and left the worksite tidy every day. Now that it's finished, we couldn't be happier. The ADU is beautiful and incredibly functional, and details like the custom cabinetry and thoughtful layout show the care they put into their work. If you're looking for a team that truly cares about their clients and delivers quality, Greg and his crew are the way to go. read more

In our experience, Marks-Woods Construction LLC are dangerous and dishonest contractors. I won't bury the lede: Marks-Woods lit our house on fire and abandoned it to burn, cut a live 240 volt wire and left it exposed in our yard where children play, mis-wired an outlet so that it threw sparks and molten copper onto our attic insulation, and allowed a gas leak to persist in our occupied house for at least a month. They exceeded their three-month contracted timeline by five months and left the project incomplete. If those facts are not enough to convince you of their unsuitability to earn your business, please continue reading. The red flags came early and often: Marks-Woods demanded a HUGE down payment to begin work, which began later than promised and faced delays from the outset. As other reviewers have noted, workers would show up infrequently (initially less than 60% of the time) and do very little work (for example, we caught them napping in our garage, watching videos, and playing with paper airplanes). Marks-Woods' work failed and continues to fail Fairfax County inspections (our deck for example, was built at great expense and not even remotely to code) and of hit-or-miss quality (we could not confirm some of their subcontractors' licenses either). They wasted time and resources via sloppy workmanship (e.g., leaky roof, broken tiles, unlevel floors), failing to follow building plans correctly, and misordering supplies etc. etc. Marks-Woods' communication was erratic and inaccurate regarding scheduling, work to be done, work completed, and invoicing. You can verify in other reviews (note the lack of historical ones on Google: Marks-Woods' business profile suspiciously disappeared for a while) and public court records that they allegedly pull financial shenanigans such as failing to pay their creditors and subcontractors. For our project, they unilaterally (and likely illegally) demanded changes in our payment terms in violation of the contract and created false invoices requesting payment multiple times for the same line items while sprinkling payments among various unrelated line items to help their "cash flow". I could continue our litany of documented complaints ad nauseum and appreciate your reading this far. My only goal is to spare other homeowners from the financial and emotional trauma our family suffered at the hands of Marks-Woods; avoid them: they do not deserve your or anyone else's business. read more

Marks Woods has been working on a house on my street for at least the past year for what, based on the permit, seems to be a fairly small project. 132 ft.² bump out and kitchen renovation. Certainly,I don't have the full story of what's going on, but I can tell you that their work crew seems to show up intermittently for a few hours here and there, make a ton of noise, disrupting the neighborhood - impacting people a lot of people with an inordinate amount of jackhammering and drilling - and then disappearing for days at a time with Little to know discernible progress. Repeated calls to the company simply to ask for a timeline as to when this project might be completed go ignored and unanswered. Between their lack of response and the fact that I've seen entire houses be stick built in less time than it's taken them for this small project, I would caution anybody looking to utilize them, despite the fact that the work itself seems lovely. Honestly, I'm hoping this review at least gets a response from the company so that we can plan accordingly as we would like to know if this is gonna drag on for another year or if there's any end in sight so that we can get back to working from home, recovering from illness, putting kids down to nap, etc., read more

Worst experience I've ever had with a contractor. They essentially walked away with our money after extensive delays to the project and never came back to fix their mistakes. They left many things incomplete and unsafe. A nightmare company. Seems like they are Ponzi scheming the work. Stay away and if you get persuaded to work with them be very careful not to put too much down. read more

I had Marks-Woods give an assessment on a large remodel I was thinking about. They were able to schedule things super fast and walk me through all of the different things that need to be considered when doing a remodel in old town. I ended up not being able to do the remodel, because I was at my Floor Area Ratio Limit (which he explained to me) but overall it was great service and I would definitely recommend them to other people. read more

I reached out to Marks-Woods in August 2020 since I am renovating my two bathrooms, powder room, kitchen and Attic. They were responsive and came out within a week. During the meeting, they seemed very professional and knowledgeable. They said I would receive a quote after two to three weeks. After several attempts to receive a quote and two months later, I have received nothing. It has been over three weeks since they promised I would receive a proposal and have received nothing- not even an email. I am not able to provide any details of their quality of work since I haven't even received a proposal after two months. I would not waste your time contacting them because I have wasted two months and could have gone with another builder. I understand it's Covid, but I can only imagine what type of communication they provide once they have you sign the contract. Very disappointed. Beware. read more

These guys did a great job remodeling a bathroom in my house. Quick, efficient, good work, and reasonably priced. One person came to the house, looked at the bathroom, and came back with an estimate. The estimate was really clear, even breaking down the costs by demolition, drywalling, products (toilet, tile, sink, etc.), and other work. The workers put down protective covering in the house to avoid damage from coming in and out of the house. Every day, the workers removed the resulting trash from my house, which was substantial on demo day. The only downside I found is that there are three levels of people to a project: the estimate/organizer guy, the middle guy, and the workers (who use colorful Spanish words and phrases while working that could offend some but amused me). It took a while to figure out why the middle guy was coming in and out of my house once a day and what the hierarchy was. While the three levels communicate well, it's not perfect and there were some communication gaps once in a while. read more

We remodeled 2 upstairs bathrooms that our kids use and a large kitchen including an attached mud room. We also ended up replacing all our main level flooring with LVT. MW was easy to work with from adjusting the budget and schedule to fit our needs to providing design help and making changes to our plans on the fly. The project manager, Matt, was always professional and helpful and made many suggestions to solve problems we ran into along the way. The designer Danielle had terrific ideas about color and cabinetry and kept our project on budget with her suggestions. We got 6 quotes for this project and MW's proposal was on the lower end, but we never felt like we compromised quality of service or products. Very pleased with the result and will likely be calling them again for our next exterior project. read more

We used MW for a partial renovation of a bathroom in our townhome in December and had a wonderful experience. When we initially interviewed contractors we asked all the companies the same list of questions, on this particular project the SCHEDULE was important to us and MW really came through in terms of getting the project completed within agreed upon timeline. The bid was competitive for the required work--do your research for similar projects in your area; the estimates for the materials were also close. If the price is a consideration for you, take down the names of the recommended vendors and go check out the selection in person. Researching majority of the details ahead of time greatly improves communications. Once we had our decisions made, the project manager took care of the process details. Staying in touch was very helpful because at any given time we were clear on what was going to be done and when. The crews were well-trained guys, they were efficient and pleasant. In particular, I want to mention how pleased we were with set up/protection and clean up. Our home has a large amount of electronics and much of the renovations on other floors has been completed by us so it was fairly important not to have other areas of the house be destroyed in order to fix one bath. The crew really took the time to set up protective covers on everything and when the work was completed our place was thoroughly tidied up. If we had questions and asked the crew, there was either somebody who knew the answer already or they made sure they found out the answers. I did not find communications to be a sticking point at all. Personally, I really like the tiered payment approach when the money is due upon completion of major deliverables from the established timeline. We found this arrangement to work well. We worked primarily with Greg Marks who was wonderful to work with, very knowledgeable and very professional. He answered all our questions, he listened when we enumerated concerns prior to contract signing and he was very forthcoming with suggesting solutions. More specifically, Greg made some style and materials suggestions that worked out very well. If you invest the time to do the research and to check out the selection before making your final selection with the project manager--it makes a world of difference for the project timeline. Taking advice from a professional really made sense on some of the details and that is the course we took. The end result speaks for itself--the look and feel of the remodel is "top notch". read more

MW Construction Services is a huge rip off company. They say there bid is very competitive, but it's not! Pls make sure you do your research and home work before you sign the contract. They made a proposal for my addition for $32000, and next contractor doing the same job priced me $21000. The guy name Greg Marks will sweet talk you to get into the contract then rip you off. And once you sign the contract and pay the 1/3 as initial deposit as they require...you can not back out...so pls be careful with MW Construction. read more

We hired MW Construction to renovate our kitchen and master bathroom. Greg Marks guided us through the design and construction process along with his assistant pm Joe. Both managers were very professional and provided great ideas throughout the project. The MW team kept the project clean and quality high. We were new to the area, so we were extremely thorough with the contractor selection process. This firm is honest and ran by a group of people that redefine the contractor stereotype. The finished product is magazine worthy!!! We highly recommend MW and constantly refer them to both friends and family. read more

We started out our contractor search by interviewing multiple contractors. After meeting with Greg Marks with MW Construction, we decided to stop interviewing other contractors. After reviewing MW's very detailed proposal, we had Greg Marks come back out to the house to review the proposal and discuss our budget. Greg provided cost saving ideas that still provided the final design and quality that we were desiring. We signed a contract a week later for our renovation, which included my new dream kitchen, spa inspired master bathroom, hall bathroom remodel, and new trex deck. Greg suggested I take a look at the HOUZZ website for ideas (my new favorite app). Greg took us to his suppliers and designers to select cabinets, tile, fixtures, and other materials. I was originally really stressing this part of the process, but MW made it painless and actually enjoyable (Greg was very patient with me through this process :0). Once construction was under way, we dealt with Drew Marks and his assistant project manager Dyer Rothrock, who were both very knowledgeable, responsive, and respectful. I joked both Greg and Drew (brothers) that construction is in their blood and that they should have their own TLC/HG TV show. In summary, we couldn't be happier with the finished product and highly recommend these guys. Great firm ran by great people! read more

My husband and I found Marks-Woods Construction (MW) online and went with their Yelp, HOUZZ, and Angie's List reputation as a guide. We were looking to remodel a house we just bought and wanted an entirely in-house design and build team to handle the project. After consulting with other companies, we were drawn to MW because of their progressive approach to the design-build process. We are a young couple and other companies didn't take our needs very seriously thinking we wouldn't have much business to offer, but the MW team treated us with respect. Greg Marks initially greeted us with a friendly smile and extensive construction knowledge. Greg sent a very detailed proposal days later and we signed the contract a week later. Less than six months later we were moving into the house of our dreams and they still keep in touch with us to make sure everything is looking good! read more

Excellent. These folks do top-notch work. They don't cut corners, but really do the work right. The result is a finished project that looks great and keeps working well for years to come. They are also really easy to work with. Everyone is really nice and polite, and respects that this is your house. Greg Marks has great design ideas and Drew Marks is very responsive as a project manager, and great at problem-solving. They really go out of their way to be helpful. I realized on a Saturday morning that I'd forgotten to ask them to touch up paint on the kitchen ceiling, which had water damage from the old bathroom (which was why we started the remodeling project when we did). They knew I had an open house planned for that afternoon, so they sent someone over to paint it right away, on a Saturday morning! A couple of years ago, when we had our kitchen remodeled, they worked overtime to finish early because we had a baby shower scheduled. This is my fourth project with them and I would be happy to work with them again. read more
