The walkway leading up to our porch was sinking, the edge of the porch was falling off and we had spaces under the garage where animals were digging holes. Our back patio also had some sunken areas. Tom is very experienced and hands-on.He tries to figure out the best solution for his customers, and supervises the project personally when necessary. Our drainage problems along the front of our house were fixed, as was the back patio. The front of our porch was rebuilt, a new path installed. I found Thomas Young while looking for a contractor to back a 203k renovation mortgage. The house I ended up buying needed just about everything. Thomas was there for almost all of it, either contracting the work directly or offering me professional advice on the best approaches to meet my goals. Thomas helped manage my expectations and came up with a realistic plan that met my many needs. By the end of the project, he had: -established goals and budgets for my 203k renovation loan -installed, replaced, built, or repaired the HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, floors, cabinets, wash room, windows, and a laundry list of smaller details. -provided practical advice on a number of related projects in the house -organized or located all the labor (trash removal guys, electricians, plumbers, etc.) -and most importantly, completed everything he said he would in a timely, on-budget fashion. This was my 1st house, 1st mortgage, and 1st time working with a contractor. I was very nervous about making such a big leap into the world of home renovations and didn't have a lot of trustworthy references. I'd read a lot of horror stories about contractors under-bidding, bailing, or running off with money. Thankfully Thomas came through for me. T.R. Young services did literally everything they said they would, at the price they said they would, and in a timely fashion. I am always hesitant to hire someone when I didn't get a personal recommendation from someone I know and trust. No one could recommend a general contractor in the area, and I had a very difficult time finding one that did repairs and not just expensive remodels who actually returned messages. So, we called TR Young Services based on the couple of Yelp reviews. I called on a federal holiday and spoke with someone in the office. Within a couple of hours we received a return call and a couple of hours later, the owner came to look at the problem. He gave us a VERY reasonable quote and there was a work crew here the next morning at 8am. This company is WONDERFUL and we have definitely found our new handyman/repair/remodel company. The crew was on time. Actually, they were early - we saw the van parked out on the street 10 minutes early, but since it was before 8am, they waited until the scheduled time to knock. We had a kitchen pipe that was leaking into the finished basement below. They tried fixing it from below, which would have been cheaper and quicker. Once they realized that they couldn't reach the issue that way, they requoted us and scheduled a different crew to come out the next day. I don't want it to sound like they did a "bait and switch" because we had been warned and were prepared for this possibility by the plumber we had come to look at it earlier. We hoped it would be easy but were prepared that it wasn't. When all was said and done, the crew was quick, cleanly (they laid down tarps and protective plastic throughout the house and were on the floor mopping on hands and knees when they finished), professional and incredibly accommodating. They suggested different ways to approach the work so we could keep costs down. They dealt with my curious, gigantic (125 lbs.) and hyperactive dog. They dealt with our annoying home warranty company and all we had to do was ask. Nothing seemed to bother them. I can't recommend these guys more. We will definitely continue to use them. read more

Thomas and his crew recently finished a substantial repair to our house. The second floor bedroom (formerly a sleeping porch that was converted to a bedroom many years ago) on our newly-purchased house turned out to be failing structurally and had to have its support posts replaced (yes, we knew about it from the inspection, but no, we didn't know how big a job it was going to be -- we would never have bought the house if we had). We shopped around with several companies and chose TR Young because of the good reviews. I'm glad we did. Thomas handled all of the details (getting engineering plans drawn up, pulling permits, keeping us updated on the progress of the job). Ron and his team are outstanding. We had them install a ceiling fan, do all of the ductwork and electrical work for a new bathroom vent fan, change all of our exterior door locks, and install a banister in front of an open staircase. Ron promptly responded to telephone calls and emails. He had a crew available within a few days of my first email. The workers arrived on time, were professional and courteous, put down protective covers, and cleaned up after themselves. A master electrician handled the ceiling fan and vent fan, while a separate crew installed the banister and changed the door locks. By doing multiple projects at once and working efficiently, they completed everything within a couple of hours. You may be able to find a handyman for a little less money, but Ron gave us a fair price on a per-project basis. In light of Ron's great communication skills and his crew's fantastic work, it's worth the few dollars extra to use T.R. Young. We will certainly use them for additional jobs in the future. read more

Tom and his team finished a beautiful renovation of my historic condo this Fall. He invested time and interest in considering the things I wanted done and eagerly provided many ideas. Once we got started, he was very quick to return phone calls like when coordinating on fixtures that I had to pick out. His talented and careful crew got right to work and essentially were on the job full time except for holidays and when permits were being pulled. Because my place was old, there were lots of different little things to sort out and work around like varying wall thicknesses, old windows, missing trim, etc... and they made it all work! They also patched 15 ceiling holes that an electrician had done and those came out perfect. Because you will discuss many ideas, get the final ideas you had in mind in the contract. The short: I hired TR Young Services to completely re-do the floor of the bathroom in my DC rowhouse (new joists, new plumbing, reconfigure, add floor heat). Some of the work was great, but many details were missed and nearly three years later, when they finally finished, the floor tile looks atrocious. And my standards are not particularly high. The long: here we go. When I was selecting a contractor, one thing Thomas emphasized was the fact that T.R. Young had employees do all of the work - they didn't subcontract. I liked that. When the work started, we learned that the guys doing the work had just gone from being employees to being subcontractors. That didn't set a good tone, but we liked them and the work they did. In fact, we liked a lot of the work they did. They were nice, they cleaned up after themselves, and much of the work they did was great. So what were the problems? As they finished up the project, lots of details got missed. They left gaping holes (¾") in the floor tile at the radiator pipe penetrations. When I mentioned that, I was given two escutcheon plates, and I had to stuff and caulk the holes and install the plates myself. Other pipe penetrations got no escutcheon plates. The shower curtain rod was never installed properly. The shower plumbing got very scratched up. They didn't use an elastic grout along the walls, so the grout there cracked immediately. And then there is the electric floor heat. I wanted hydronic heat for the floors, but Ron, the one who handled my project, convinced me that electrical heat would be great. And it was great, except for the cold spots, in front of the commode and the sink, where one tends to place bare feet. I asked if it was fixable or if it was just something we would have to live with. Ron said he could fix it. So he tried. Over the course of well over a year, they took part of the floor up, tried to fix the heating mesh several times, and failed. Then they tried to order some sort of patch kit, but after months abandoned that idea. At some point, one of the workers broke the leveling foot on the sink console. This was never mentioned to us - we discovered it ourselves. And when we called Kohler, we were told that the leveling foot cannot be replaced, and that the entire console ($300) is therefore a loss. At another point, I got an email from Ron asking if we could make an early progress payment because he was having cash flow problems. After about a year of back and forth on the floor heat, Ron finally said that it couldn't be fixed, so they would have to take up the entire floor where the heating mesh was and re-install it. The result is abysmal. It is the worst tile job I have ever seen. The tile is a simple pinwheel pattern, and the little squares and rectangles now stick up all over the place, making it very lumpy. In addition, the grout lines go from about a half of an inch wide to next to nothing. And the new tile doesn't match the tile they used earlier. Grout was left not only on tops of the tiles, but also in random spots around the bathroom. And, again, they used non-elastic grout at the wall border, and it has all cracked. As for the heat, when I went to test it, I learned that the new controller that they installed isn't programmable like the original one. It takes about 45 minutes for the heat to kick in, so normally you set the controller to heat the floor to a temperature by the time you wake up to use the bath. No way to do that with this controller, making it not particularly useful. I have tested the floor heat, and found it wanting. Even after 45 minutes or more, there are cold spots. I told Ron about the uneven tile, and he said he would come take a look. That was over two months ago. I guess it doesn't matter anymore, because I really can't trust them to do the job right. We are so, so disappointed. And we are stuck with a terrible-looking bathroom floor that doesn't heat up properly. read more

We've had Thomas and his crew out to the house for projects twice since we moved into our fixer upper home in July 2015. First we had them repair a very decrepit deck and fix a floor joist that the previous owners had cut out to install some pipes. Then we just had him back to resolve some issues we were having with water drainage under the house. At first I thought the price seemed a little steep but after talking to Mr. Young and seeing the professionalism of his crew I am extremely pleased with all the work they have done. These guys do NOT take short cuts or cut corners. Everyone is friendly and hard working and stuff gets done right the first time, on time and on budget. Thomas is extremely personable and knowledgeable and comes up with very creative solutions to difficult problems. He is also very prompt to reply and courteous when answering questions or acknowledging concerns. I will continue to use this company for any and all work I need done in the future. I recently purchased my first home in Arlington, and it needed quite a bit of work on it. I found Thomas on Yelp and instantly emailed him. He is great and I am extremely pleased. He worked well with my budget and offered plenty of insight. Since I am a first time homeowner, I really had no idea what I was doing. But Thomas was able to guide me in the right direction. He installed a full bathroom, kitchen counter tops, new appliances, a breakfast bar, tiling in the basement floor, removed a wall and even managed to extend a bedroom. I was so pleased with the inside of the house that I hired him again for the landscaping of the front and back yards. He repaired my deck and put in a parking pad and a patio in the backyard. I had quite a bit of bamboo, so he created a barrier in the ground so that it would not return. I am sure that I will hire him again for future projects.
