Our 1940s house wiring can be a bit fragile but they were careful and did a great job! They even fixed a small leak under our sink that I had just noticed a day prior. Later that day I noticed the fan was a bit askew, when I reached out Handyman was eager to fix the problem and set up a time the following week that worked well for me. I was a bit skeptical about raving Yelp reviews of this business but yes, they are that good. Bill ( William) was responsive to the estimates reQuest, asked thank you Igor questions before accepting the job (my house is in the historic district). His crew arrived on time, worked two full days onn my kitchen ( tricky electrical connection of a new stooge hood, building a duct and a buckhead to cover it, hardwire a new dishwasher and moving electrical outlets. Great knowledgeable crew ( gave me gOod ideas to alter my initial design for the buckhead ) that did a good job, exactLy as I wanted it to be done. THe price is not the lowest but very reasonable for the quality of workmanship. The final invoice was in the same amount as in the estimate ( I did provide a detailed lIst of what needs to be done and we stuck to that list). I have had a bad experience with some other companies with five stars reviews on Yelp - you get a quite low estimate but whEn they start working, they find any possible "deviation" to inflate the final price and you end up paying twice. I wish I could give this place negative stars. I got my garage celling fixed that fell, he came and "reinforced it" but it has only been a few months and it's falling apart. I have owned this house for over 15 years and I have never had such a horrible job done on my property. I tried to call him to come fix it but his customer service rep was very rude and said there is no guarantee after three months. It has been 5 months and I just noticed pieces on the floor. It's my garage so I do not look at the celling often but it's summer and the weather has been good. There is no reason his "reinforcements" to fall off after 5 months? I own this house, why would I pay to fix my celling for it to fall apart in a matter of months. His work didn't even last 6 months and he wants me to pay again. He will not even come look at the horrible mess that he has made. He wasted my money and time. I hope no one has to go through this!! William Lopez got right back to me and was able to schedule Miguel for my projects-- a leaky pipe, broken garage door opener and broken sprinkler system. Miguel arrived on time, kept me updated on his progress, and was creative in finding solutions to difficult challenges. He had to do some of his work in the midst of a small event going on at the house: he was respectful of the guests and had an overall wonderful manner about him. Work estimates were provided quickly and the workers who came out did an efficient and quality job of completing tasks. They did a handful of smaller projects for us that my husband and I could just never find the time to get around to doing ourselves. Bob also contacted multiple vendors to help us find some solid wood bifold closet doors that could be cut down to fit a non-standard sized closet in our older home. Some of the price quotes from vendors were much higher than expected, so he went above and beyond in helping us find an option in our budget. I contacted Handyman in the DMV for basic woodworking repairs to my vintage, all wood art house. I was looking specfically for an experienced carpenter, and Handyman in the DMV responded to my inquiry as having such expertise. While they were very responsive, I soon found that expertise and effective communication were lacking. As a result, I ended up worse off than when we started. The two stars above are for responsiveness on the front end; everything else doesn't even register. Problems starting happening when the estimator failed to communicate to the two handymen what they would be doing and supplies needed. They showed up unaware, unprepared and unable to communicate effectively. Due to a language barrier, I found myself monitoring work and interpreting specifications all day, which is not something I had expected or planned to do. Further, one of the handymen's skills was clearly not public ready, yet he was assigned by the other to take on projects that required much more preplanning and knowledge. The end result for me was disastrous. Not only did projects not get done due to inexperience, other projects were made worse due to failure to preplan. When I raised these concerns with the owner (Will) he was not very understanding, but did finally agree to a small discount. It took several phone calls and emails before the $40 estimation fee was applied to my invoice. I was never shown the receipts for supplies, so have no idea if those were marked up and how much. I am now out hundreds of dollars and need to hire a real carpenter to fix the issues. If you need something simple done like installing premade shelves, kitchen tile or baseboard, I think these guys can do that. However, based on my experience, I would NOT recommend them for any technical work, electrical work, or any work on historic or vintage homes. read more

I reached out to Handyman in DMV after seeing the positive reviews on here and was able to schedule an estimate the week of, which I was happy about. I agreed to their terms of a $50 estimate fee which would be used as a deposit to go towards the work if I decided for them to do the the work. They performed the estimate and sent me the estimate via email on 10/15. They asked me to respond back via email if I wanted to go forward with their company and that they would reach out to schedule. I responded back immediately on 10/15, agreed to the terms of the estimate, and asked them to contact my tenant for scheduling. After my tenant has not been contacted for a week, I followed up again via email and via text on a number that I had previously contacted the company with, no response. I have called their phone number multiple times and left a voicemail, no response. It is clear that they did not have any intention of ever performing the work but instead just used the estimate fee as a cash grab. In my opinion this constitutes fraud and I hope no one else is tricked into their scam. I have requested a refund via venmo but am not anticipating getting it back. If I were you, I would certainly look elsewhere before hiring a handyman. Update on 11/2/20: I am thankful to receive a refund for my estimate fee. Henry the technician who worked on the toilet was very helpful, the only downside I would say was he needed to go back out and get some parts. Search no more for a reputable handyman! This company provides excellent prompt courteous service and quality innovative work. I needed someone to first repair two holes in the drywall ceiling (kitchen and living room), due to long ago plumbing work.The second task I needed done was to repair/replace gaps in our roof's cedar shakes (squirrels or birds were trying to get inside. The third task was to inspect our sole gutter for proper operation. RESULTS: No visible trace that the holes were ever there (the technician Gilbert used custom color-matched paint). The shakes were nailed together where they were splitting or separated (or replaced with new shakes if necessary), vertically on the 4 problem roof corners.Plus, he replaced about a dozen shakes in the front which were warping upwards. I was satisfied with his gutter inspection and recommendations (accepting advice from my neighbor). Gilbert arrived about 9 AM each day, and worked a few extra hours in the afternoon. The estimate and final statement of work done was professionally prepared. The cost for the extra shake work was reasonable (copies of material receipts and labor log sheets were supplied). I chose Handyman in DMV because of their high rating on Yelp and the reviews said they did good work and offer great customer service. I cannot comment on their work, but I can comment on the poor customer service they offered. My exterior shutter fell off from the third floor of my townhouse and I needed person to re-install my shutter. I spoke to William and easily scheduled an appointment for Friday morning. It rained on Friday morning so I was expecting William to call to ask if we can reschedule for either another time in the day or for another day. To me, this is not a problem. I understand because it was raining and for safety reasons, it would be best if the technician scheduled it for later in the day when the rain would end or for another day. I called two hours after the scheduled appointment and explained that the technician did not show up and that I was ok with it because it was raining. I just wanted to know if the technician was coming in the afternoon when the weather would clear up or if he wanted to come on another day. He sounded surprised that the technician did not call to let me know he wasn't coming and to reschedule a time or date. William said that rescheduling for another day would be best and stated that the technician is free and could come on Sunday at 9 am. That was fine with me. No big deal. On Sunday, I waited for the technician. He never showed up. I called the office at 11 am just to get a status and when I could be expecting him. I ended up leaving a message. I did not get a call back that day. On Monday morning, William did leave a message and wrote an email apologizing about Sunday and said the technician was "delayed" so that is why he could not make it on Sunday. He did offer for the technician to come by Monday afternoon or later in the week to install my shutter. Whatever happened to calling and letting your customer know, "I can't make it today so can we reschedule?" It's very rude and unprofessional to just not show up. To me, this shows a certain degree of not wanting my business. To me, it is apparent that this company lacks courtesy and professionalism. If you are running late or if something comes up that you cannot make it and need to reschedule then I am fine with it as long as you call to let the customer know. At the very least, I expect that. Professionalism and courtesy goes a long way with customers, especially with first time customers. I'm sure they probably do good work. If professionalism and courtesy is what you are looking for, I would advise you to take your time and money elsewhere. read more

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with this contractor. I found them to be very unprofessional and their customer service to be poor. The business appears to be operating out of someone's home and they did not provide the type of customer service that you'd expect from a real corporate business. I contacted them for an estimate, and while they responded quickly, scheduling the date for an in-person visit required a lot of back and forth. Their phone line has something wrong with it; half the time the phone call doesn't go through. You have to keep calling to get the phone to connect. They took days to respond to emails and calls, or didn't respond at all. Eventually, the in-personal estimate was scheduled. I took time away from work to accommodate the visit, but 9 minutes AFTER their scheduled arrival time, they emailed me to say they were not coming due to illness. They did not call me. I just happened to check my email while I was waiting for them; I feel they should have called to reschedule due to the last minute nature of the change. The visit was rescheduled for the following week and they showed up. I was charged $50 for the estimate, which could be put toward the total cost of the job. I thought they'd do the job on the spot (since it was such a small, easy job), but they said no, they're only there for an estimate, which was unclear at the outset. They had to come back to do the job, which was a surprise. They sent a formal estimate a couple of days later and I said yes and asked to schedule the service appointment. They said they'd call to schedule but they never did. I tried to schedule the service appointment for 3 weeks. They did not respond to multiple calls (when I could get through) and multiple emails. Not even a courtesy notice to say they were busy, had a delay, or simply didn't want to do the job because it was too small and not worth their time (which was my suspicion). I had no choice but to give up and find another contractor. I requested a refund of the $50 deposit (via Venmo), which they refunded almost immediately without any question, which I interpreted as their admission that they simply didn't want to do the job but didn't have the professionalism to say that. I called Handyman in DMV and they were able to come out THE SAME DAY to repair the holes, drywall, paint, etc. While one layer of paint was drying William asked if there was anything else he could help with and ended up fixing two doors. I felt safe enough to leave him in my condo working while I went out to purchase a new doorknob down the street (one of the doors required it).
