The entire process from first contact, to scheduling a craftsman to come to the home, to the completion of the agreed upon work, went very smoothly. Tom, the scheduler, explained the entire process and answered all of my questions. The followup communication was excellent. David, the craftsman, did an absolutely outstanding job and thoroughly cleaned up after he completed the dry wall replacement and painting work on the kitchen ceiling; and the cauking of the 2nd floor bathroom tub and the base of the toilet. Both Tom ands David were quite friendly, and really knew their business. The final price for everything that I agreed to have David complete was acceptable and well worth the cost. I appreciated the strong communication from the scheduling team, the fact that our tech was timely, professional, and did good quality work. But, I felt like the company exploits the hourly fee by including unloading their car, loading it back up (in multiple trips) and whatever the hell paperwork is happening on the ipad. I'd estimate that we paid an extra $300 or so for things that they do to try to add time. Some of the work took far longer than it should. Somehow our tech spent two hours installing less than 2 feet of floor molding, when we already had it. So, we paid like $400 something for what should be maybe a $150, or max $200 project. Plus they look for other ways to make a project take far longer. When we had to order a door, the staff was like "we'll pick it up for you from the warehouse" -- it was 45 minutes away from our home and would have cost us hundreds, when it turns out the company they purchased it from could easily deliver it for $7. Hambelton didn't even give me that option til I fought for it. I also told our tech not to bother doing certain things (like clean), and since he insisted, I offered our own shop vac, and he refused to use it, instead going down to his car to get more of his own tools/supplies. So cool, another $50 for some cleaning that would have taken me like 2 min. There was even dumb stuff, like the company made me pay for our tech's parking meter because the contract (which you don't sign until after paying the non refundable deposit, says that you must guarantee parking for your tech). It wasn't necessarily about the money there, it was just annoying that they cannot accept the cost of doing business. For that reason, I'm not sure I would use Hambelton again. I don't mind paying for good work, but, again, this just felt exploitive. But, if you truly don't care about price, Hambelton was reliable, and did good work (which, admittedly is rare for handymen). read more

What started as a straightforward $1,600 roofing and siding project turned into a $4,300 invoice filled with inflated charges and incomplete work--and they never informed us we were going over estimate. Major Issues: Questionable Charges: * Billed for 17 bundles of shingles for a 5x7 shed roof patch that required only 1 bundle (~$1,000 overcharge). They claimed it was a supplier error rather than catching it themselves. * Charged for 8 hours of "high ladder" work (at double-time rates) that was never disclosed in the estimate. The only ladder work was a half-hour to reattach a gutter that fell off. Incomplete Work: * Did not replace trim pieces on the shed as quoted * Did not reattach siding as quoted Poor Quality & Communication: * Shoddy workmanship throughout * Left trash scattered across the yard, then demanded an additional fee to haul it away * Never communicated that costs were skyrocketing--we only discovered the massive overages when they handed us the bill Bottom line: Run, don't walk. We never actually hired them. When I called to inquire and spoke to their sales rep, I made it clear we had 6-7 small jobs to get quoted, but we needed someone for sure on a certain date to come and do some painting. All other projects were flexible on timing but this one day had to be on a certain date for painting, and if they could assure me of that, then I would go ahead and schedule someone to come look at what needed to be done, review the estimate and go from there. I was then told I had to pay for someone to come do the estimate. While reluctant, I did agree after again confirming the importance of someone being on the job to do the painting on a specific date and after being reassured that this was not a problem, I paid. Fast forward to waiting for the estimator to come out, spending the time to detail all the work on the various projects I wanted done, reviewing the estimate and agreeing to it. Then, several days later, the same sales rep calls to get all the jobs scheduled but then says "we don't have anyone to come paint when you need them". I said this was part of the original qualification and I was told this wouldn't be a problem. He ignored me and wanted to schedule the rest of the work. To which I said, if the company lacks integrity in keeping their word before I even get work done, I don't think I can trust the company at all, so will not be scheduling any work. He was ambivalent and indifferent, so I just hung up. No attempt at all to salvage the sale, nothing. Hard pass. Void of integrity. read more

It took weeks to schedule an appointment after I paid a non-refundable $180 just to have them come out. They charge $140 per hour for one "craftsman" to work on your home. If they need to go to the store to pick up supplies it's still $140 an hour. I had 2 rooms painted with ceilings and primer for one room. I also had some baseboard installed and window trim scratches sanded out. He did a very good job but it cost over $5700! Way too expensive. read more

We recently purchased an older home and had a number of odd jobs that needed to be done. We should have walked away as soon as we found out that they won't give estimates in advance, but rather that you'll get your estimate during the obligatory $180 first hour that you have to pay in advance to have someone even come out. We were given an initial service date over two and a half weeks out. They called less than a week later after 5pm to see if we were interested in being moved up the schedule to the next day since they'd had an opening, then cancelled the next morning due to a personal emergency on their end. Once rescheduled back to our initial date of service, we were told one arrival time, which was then bumped. Then the tech we were waiting on was switched out with another tech who only had limited availability, nowhere near enough to complete all of the tasks that we had listed to the company with our initial call and was unable to complete the tasks in one day even though it was estimated at 4-6 hours upon arrival. We were given a window for a follow-up the next day to complete the work, which they then bumped, and then ultimately cancelled. While the handyman that came out was fine, the scheduling experience we had was a nightmare. We have cancelled any follow-ups at this point and are currently searching for a new handyman to finish the work that was not completed. We can not recommend using Hambleton Handyman for any services as a result. read more

I was charged over $2000 (13.75hrs at $140 per hour, plus $180.00 to show up fee) to paint two 4x6 bathrooms, hang curtain rails, and straighten the dishwasher. I would never usually hire someone to paint but I have a 5 month old baby that doesn't let me put him down long enough for projects. I needed two bathrooms painted (due to moisture issues as the previous owner used flat paint) and ceiling mounted curtain rods hung. I was surprised when the technician said this was going to take 8 hrs, ended up taking 13.75 hrs over two days. The technician was a very nice man, but he worked so slow that it took him two days to do this work. The first day he showed up at 0800 but disappeared and didn't start any work until 10:00. I was charged for that time. By 2pm the first day he had painted two coats on the ceilings of the bathrooms and hung one of 4 parts of the curtain rods. By the end of the first day he had painted one coat on the walls of the first bathroom. The second day he completed the curtain rods, and painted one coat of paint in the second bathroom. It took him an hour to reattach the towel bars and switch covers in two bathrooms. I then had to paint another coat of paint in the bathrooms after he left. It took me less than 30 mins to put another coat (including taking down the towel bars and switch covers and brush work) in each bathroom, I timed it. I also charged for paint rollers and plastic sheeting, which had provided but he chose not to use. Lesson learned. read more

If you have a minor carpentry job, I advise against contacting Hambleton. I paid them upfront to complete a small carpentry job. However, I received an offer from another carpenter to complete the job for free. I decided to take him up on his offer, and it took him about 10 minutes to complete the job. I then called Hambleton to cancel the service request and was told by the service rep I could not receive a refund, but a credit for the service fee of $130.00. I argued that I should not be charged for a service that had not been completed, since I was canceling a week before the service date. He promised to investigate and get back to me. The following day, he called back and agreed to refund the upfront service fee. He then asked me not to contact Hambleton again, stating that I was not the right client for them. I concur with his decision. I do not think it is a good idea to pay upfront for a job that has not yet been completed, and their hourly rate of $100 is too high for my budget. read more

This company was referred by a roofing company to do the rake flashing and it has to stop. It took Hambleton 7 hours to tell me that it's too high and too dangerous. They have the evidence of my call when I told them over the phone that my roof was a high roof. Yet, on the day of they were suppose to send ONE technician, they sent two. Again, they reviewed the phone recording to prove it was one technician. Why it matters? Because they charge $180 for the first hour just to review what the work has to be done, then it is $96 per hour per technician, which in my case, only ONE technician was to be sent not two. Remember the 7 hours to tell me they could not do the work. Oh, and by the way, the office doesn't care that they made a mistake, they still hold the homeowner responsible for their mistake. That really pissed me off when I heard that on speaker phone. I told them I would have never contracted them if that was the case. Anyway. The technicians were very nice people and I am sure they do excellent work in other areas. But BEWARE, if you need work on your roof and you have a high roof, stay away. And make sure they tell you how many technicians they are sending. Additionally, their office originally said they make their money on the work they do. Guess what, going to get parts at home depot and taking 3.5 hours, with 2 technicians, yeah, I don't think so. You do the math. I am really mad at myself for hiring someone, but they said they were professional and they could do the job over the phone specially for high roof. Well, I learned my lesson. The work was not complete, still paid a lot of money for the job not completed. This company is for rich people who is willing to pay $500 for changing a light bulb. It's no joke, $180 to check what the problem is, then go to home depot for a few hours, then start the real work. But hey, you have money to burn, the. this company is for you. BEWARE!!! Hambleton Handyman is the most unorganized company I have ever dealt with. I will not use this company again. They took 3 1/2 months to screen-in a simple two sided covered porch. The cost exceeded their estimate by $600. They screwed up the materials order four times. They don't return phone calls. They lied about the status of the job when I would ask. They have lots of rules to protect themselves. I finally accepted install of the wrong screen just to get this fiasco over. We used them in the Spring of 2023 to replace a small 40 x 40-inch corner shower. We paid for an estimate which they conducted on-site and showed the craftsman, Oscar, the subway glass tiles and selected the pattern for them to be laid which was a standard subway. The estimate was 52 hours or approx. $5,900 plus materials which are billed later. They were to provide copper pipe, PVC drain pipe, fittings, nails, Durarock, mud, 2x4's, and red guard waterproofing. I r provided everything else. Understandably, you pay for the time to get supplies. However, they don't get everything all at once for your job so you wind with several hours charged getting supplies. They made 7 trips during the 9 days they were on my job. If you want to control cost, get as much for them as you can or insist that they provide a list of everything needed and have them buy it in one trip. Also be aware, they charge you $30 for every trash bag they haul away. Other than the first day of demo, the trash fit in our garage. Our craftsman took 3 full days o to tile and used double the amount of the thin set specified in the instructions. I have used handymen in the past and a shower double the size was done in glass tile and grouted in 2 days. (I would have used him again, but he retired to Florida.) The quality of the work is good. However, based on the time and the number of tiles on the wall after the first day, it worked out to laying a single tile every 4 minutes. They did not take care when using materials that drip or fall. There was a trail of adhesive across my bluestone walkway, doorknobs, hose and faucet that was used for mixing. When shown the spots on the blue stone walkway he was able to get something to clean it with and said he would not charge me for it. After this, he did put tape on the doorknobs but still areas were left unprotected. I had to request to put a drop cloth over my marble foyer and he sanded the wall above an open vanity without covering it causing a mess underneath. At the beginning of the project, it was covered with a drop cloth which for some reason disappeared. Cement buckets were being cleaned out into my front lawn until I asked him to stop. Red guard spots were on the closet doors outside the bathroom. Expect to have to be available to babysit to avoid damage and clean up after them to avoid additional hours. Our craftsman did not communicate well and seemed to have trouble understanding me. He patched and painted the entire bathroom when only two areas adjacent to the shower needed to be touched up. He patched holes where I needed to reinstall a medicine cabinet and pictures and now I have to remeasure, costing me more time. However, he did provide 1 courtesy hour for the misunderstanding which was appreciated. When I called the office to provide feedback and concern about the communication 2 days before this happened, I never got a call back despite being assured I would. I called twice more and finally spoke to Matt who told me I could call the office anytime if there was a communication issue. To which, I told him I had called two days ago and never got a call back. Their systems also don't work properly. I never received change orders via email. Receipts for supplies were also not properly sent to me during the job since the tech did not know how to do that. The system that tracks their arrival at your house says they have arrived when they are getting supplies so you don't know when they are showing up. Overall, the project ran almost $2K over budget and took a couple days longer than expected. This was after the 5 complimentary hours the company agreed to credit us with. They never were able to provide a satisfactory answer why there were unforeseen circumstances that led to the overage. The reason given was that the tile needed a lot of adhesive to get it to lay right. It was a smooth glass subway tile that was provided to them at the time of the estimate. They also told me that $8K is still less than you would pay for a bathroom with a contractor. While that's true and why we went with a handyman, it was significantly more than expected to replace a small shower, not the entire bathroom, and the majority of my day was spent managing them and running to get more thinset rather than working! If you use them, make sure to add 35-50% to the high end of their "estimate" and take time off from work to monitor the project(s) and get supplies. At the end of the day, we have a nice looking shower but their estimating, project management, communications, and cleanliness could all use improvement. read more

I had a good experience with Douglas from Hambleton Handyman. He was prompt, efficient, and professional. I've hired other services by the hour (like movers) and felt they took advantage of the hourly billing, but Douglas didn't waste any time and I felt that what I paid was a fair price. I had him patch up the drywall from where I had previously removed a wall, and he let me check on his progress every few hours. I had also asked to have my floor repaired (from where the wall was attached to the subfloor), and I was impressed that he recommended I hire someone with more experience in flooring rather than try to do it himself, do a sub par job, and leave me footing the bill. He also gave me advice on what pieces of wood to keep for the repairs once I had them done. I am much more likely to use a company again if they are willing to admit their limitations. I needed a light fixture changed on short notice, so I was willing to pay a premium for someone who could do it the next day. Without going into a long story; despite sending photos, the two (they said I needed two) handymen weren't prepared for the job. In the end, the simple request to have a light fixture swapped cost me $1600!!!!! Like another reviewer said, they don't estimate upfront. And they don't communicate. (The trip to Home Depot for supplies, less than 2 miles away, took him 3 hrs! I had no idea where he was, and frankly, assumed he stopped for lunch or something and I wasn't be charged) But from the moment they show up, until you sign the invoice, they charge you every single minute, based on my experience. And because they said I needed two people I was charged double for the time. (And yes, I understand there is a certain responsibility on my part to manage the situation, but there becomes a point where you're invested--they charge $180 for hour one before they even show up, so I kept thinking it will only be a little while longer, "they'll be done this hour....no, this hour...." When do you cut them off and get nothing for your money???) The work they did was good. **Update** I did receive a call from the owner, who wanted to understand more about dissatisfaction and gain the opportunity to try his business again. Although he wouldn't admit that $1600 was an unreasonable price for the job, he admitted that his guys didn't give an estimate upfront and frankly should've turned down the job if they weren't comfortable estimating or doing the work. Yes, agree. He's offered to have a future job quoted for me w/o the initial first-hour fee, and I will take him up on that. I would not recommend this company. On day 1 we showed the technician the work we needed to be done with pictures of the HOA violations we needed fixed, including shutters and a rake board 4 stories high. He said he would try, and got another guy out to try. The ladder was too short, and I got charged for the extra guy (who by the way then "painted" the garage door in random areas, NOT where we had showed we needed). He told me he would try with another taller ladder the next day he could come, which was about 5-6 days later. He showed up and forgot the ladder. He doesn't know when he can come next, maybe a few days later, when he said he would try again. The afternoon the day before, 3 days later, they call to say he will be coming (be ready for very last minute notifications) and I ask, can you remind him to bring the ladder? Wouldn't want him to forget again. And he says, actually, we're not going to try at all, we're not doing it. (Apparently I was going to be notified about this upon arrival of the contractor?!) So now I've completely wasted a solid week and a half when we are trying to get our house listed asap and have to scramble to get contractors who will do it. On top of that, on the first day we showed him rotted wood that needed fixing. He fixed up a bunch but forgot to do parts on the stairs so I reminded him. He finishes up around 4pm so I go out to look at the work. Instead of fixing up the rotted wood on the stairs (it's HOA policy to have it returned to the same form or as close to it as possible), he simply hacked off 7 out of 8 of the pieces (one was inexplicably left there, still rotted), with the nails that had held the pieces there still sticking out, and did not replace it with anything. I told him this was not going to work and he said he was just "trying to finish up." As in, get out of there as fast as possible even if work was not completed and clearly half-assed. I asked him how long it would take to add non-rotted pieces back, and he said about an hour. So I'm thinking, you could have done this and still finished at 5pm, but you're "done" now? I think, whatever, he still needs to try to do the 4th story rake board and shutters, so it's fine if he has to come again. So of course, imagine my frustration when I get blindsided by the news above. On top of that, on this day, he came out at 9:30am when I was told he would be there at 7:30am. So when he stopped at 4pm, I said, so around 7 hours? And he says no, 8, because he "went to get supplies" (mind you, this was a continuation of the previous work we'd requested, where he already went to the store to "get the supplies" needed). I say fine, then find out later I was billed for NINE hours. I call about this and the first thing they tell me is, he was "getting supplies" during that extra hour, and they get antagonistic with me for questioning it. No joke. I tell them, there's no way, I talked to him about this already. It took one more day of phone calls and e-mails until they finally admitted they were wrong and refunded the hour. But anyway, good to know that is their go-to excuse for overcharged hours! read more

The office worked with me to make it scheduling possible around my busy days. Had been really pleased with the first project but on their return, I encountered many problems. Grout was installed immediately after tile, despite time needed for the tile to set. The worst was the use of a plumbing valve that no longer meets code. The valve broke down and clogged refrigerator, leading to almost $600 in diagnostic and repairs. read more

We had quite a "laundry list" but Paddy and Jose took care of everything from a wall repair to light installations to rebuilding the floor under the kitchen sink (we had a leak).
