Just had to write a review for this company. My toilet needed fixing - constantly running or making a consistent whining noise when flushed. Not cool. Reached out to several companies - only DC Handyman called me back. And thank goodness they did! First of, their desk is run by Chastity. Whatever they are paying her, they should pay more. Having dealt with several home repair issues this summer, I've called several specialty repair shops, and none of them have someone as professional and customer centric as Chastity. From that first interaction, she gave me confidence in the company. The estimate was more than I was expecting ($425 for 2 hours of work), but Chastity was able to explain costs and expectations so well that I decided to just have faith. You get what you pay for, right? Next, I met Avishay and his crew. They took a look at my toilet and thought that a replacement of the tank hardware would fix the problem. Except when they tried to remove the parts, it turns out this particular toilet is an all-or-nothing type, as in the tank part that was the problem can't be removed. It was looking like my only option was a full replacement of the toilet. Yikes! I was busy researching how much does a new toilet cost, but Avishay continued to work on the part. He figured out how to open the part and tried a variety of fixes (cleaning, tightening, etc) to get it to work. After about 40 minutes of work - it did! He was able to take my very finicky and specialized toilet and work some magic. I would expect the average repairman would have just said it wasn't worth it, and advised me to just get a new one. But Avishay was determined, and I am very grateful. Chastity followed up with me after the work was done to confirm my satisfaction and confirm final cost. At the end of it all, I was charged $250 for an hour of work, and my toilet is fixed! I am delighted, and I will definitely be keeping this company on file for my next repair job. read more

I went with DC Handyman because I trusted them when they said despite higher than market prices, the quality would be assured. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The job was quite simple, replace kitchen flooring with material provided. The team at DC Handyman confidently said they could do this then proceeded to butcher my floor. There were large gaps, ripped sharp edges, curved lines. The workers used no straight edge, no measurements, and no wood filler while destroying all the material. They could tell we were appointed with the job and left anyway saying there was not much they could do. I requested someone else complete the work, they said someone would come out but after follow ups, this never happened. I requested a partial refund then sadly they stopped responding. I gave them plenty of time to reach back out to me, instead they moved on and ignored my messages. read more

Our previous review of this business was highly complimentary. Sad to say, further experiences proved to be very much a mixed bag, and although I rather like the company owner (who does the estimating) and some of the workers whom we have met, I feel I have an obligation to other Yelp users to be candid. We had them do some very typical handyman jobs involving carpentry, tile work and reglazing a tub, and that work was done quite well. On the other hand, redoing the wood floor in an entire apartment turned out less well - although we had asked for laying down a clear coating, showing the wonderful color of the wood, for some reason the workman who had done a great job on a previous floor sanding job used stain on part of the floor, perhaps permanently changing the color of the floor. In addition, the floor was left a bit rough, as if the sawdust from the sanding had not been sufficiently swept up or vacuumed; the result is that the floor will be harder to clean. And some of the stain was splashed up on the lower part of the apartment walls that had just been repainted. To its credit, the company came back to clean up the splashed stain; it also offered to redo the floor, but by that time it was too late before our new tenants were supposed to move in. We also asked the company to recoat a leaking porch roof, and first they used the wrong material -- different from what had been discussed -- and then they did such a poor job that the leaks continued and we had to recoat the roof properly. So we might well call this company again, but with serious reservations about the breadth of services they can provide well. DCHandmyman owes me $2,000 and I will have to take them to court to try to get it back. Beware of "paying for half of the job upfront". In my case they took my money 7 months ago and never did the work. This business is run by someone who apparently doesn't live in US and when you call you can never get a straight answer. It is clear to me they have used the Pandemic to their advantage by using it as an excuse for their malfeasance. It turned out to be pretty simple - the windows hand't been properly locked (despite my thinking they were). Ben taught me how to lock the windows, which requires getting on a stool and applying way more pressure than I would have thought. I did a request where it sent to maybe six different companies or so and I started getting a bunch of responses. I chose DC handyman not that they were the cheapest quoted they were actually one of the more expensive ones and the reason why I chose them is because of the great reviews they have. I loved the fast initial response and quote that I received from the company, as well as how understanding they were when I needed to change my appointment time at the last minute. They are accommodating, have excellent customer service, and really make you feel that they value your business. My job was to fix a sort of dent in a hollow-core wooden door. These guys came and within an hour my door looks brand new! They were even so kind as to return a replacement door that I had purchased (but they did not need) on their trip to Home Depot for supplies, and made sure that I got my refund. I arranged for DC Handyman to do work remotely. They worked with me to get the estimate done, and be there when I was. They sent three great people to do the work, and were done much quicker than anticipated. The work included vinyl flooring, drywall and ceramic tile repair. Hard pass - advice to other homeowners, just find an independent guy to do the work. Had a small job; a shelf was falling down and needed a L-bracket to lift it up. Explained this clearly on the phone call, and decided to play a flat rate of $250 rather than the hourly so I could get one other fixit done. Pretty rich fee for a small job, but figured it was worth the hassle of doing it myself. The contractor that Israel sent was perfectly nice, but didn't come with the L-bracket needed. He offered to go a mile down the street to the Home Depot, but after checking with Israel, said I had to call his boss (Israel). Israel said in a NOT polite way that I should have had the bracket and all parts for repairs ready, and it wasn't enough money to have the repair guy go to the Home Depot (again, a mile down the road). First off, if I knew what sort of L-bracket the shelf needed, I probably would not have hired a handyman. Second, it was never communicated I needed to have all the parts for the repairs, something no other contractor has demanded. Third - $250 for an hour of work and the very minimal repair of fixing a shelf is MORE than enough to pay anyone. Israel was insulting and more or less holding me up for more money on the phone, so I cancelled the work. read more

Avoid this business. I experienced all the headaches you hear about contractors with DC Handyman...and so, so much more. Even their receptionist/assistant said to me, after the project had hit many bumps and was over a month late, "I don't know what's happening. I just don't even know what to say..." Not only did they take 9 weeks to finish a 2 week project, but they made multiple mistakes in measurements that caused huge delays and wasted time, didn't know where to find quality materials, came late, often didn't come at all, installed damaged doors and then promised to replace them and then never did, didn't finish parts of the project they had committed to, charged us $500 for things Israel verbally committed to "throw in", had terrible communication (we told Israel in writing that we wanted a closet one way. He never told his workers who did it the opposite way and then had to destroy and redo all that work), etc. But the most frustrating part of doing business with them was that they failed to take responsibility for mistakes. For example, they said the project would take 2 weeks. After 2 weeks past and almost nothing was done I called Israel. He said the project was slow because I was hard to get a hold of (I travelled for 5 days). That week my husband had met with him IN PERSON and I had called the office twice. When I pointed that out to him and noted that I was home now ready to meet anytime, he made up a different reason the work was late. Things are sometimes late. It's ok. Why not just take responsibility and move forward? Why blame the customer? Another example: Most contractors will cover furniture or go outside if they are going to cut wood with an electric saw so that your home isn't covered in sawdust. Not these guys. The workers cut a ton of wood in our garage- where we had put a lot of our photos and furniture- and never covered anything so our stuff was COVERED in thick dust. OK- everyone makes mistakes. Not a huge deal. I sent a picture of the mess to let them know. But I didn't get an apology or an offer to fix the mess. In fact, they never even replied. I think many of the good reviews here asked this business to do a simple thing: hang a shelf, fix a door, etc. If you need something VERY simple, they might be fine, but I'd still avoid working with them if you can. Save yourself weeks of frustration and find a better business. read more

There is something inherently frustrating about calling a handyman service and admitting that you don't have time/ability to figure out how to do some types of home repairs yourself. So it was with a heavy heart that I reached out to DC Handyman to do some little projects around the house that had been piling up and I had been putting off and just needed to get done. Update** I had to get more work done and called Israel back to do more drywall work and tile installation. He was very prompt and his guy were incredibly professional and did a really nice job. (9/23/16) Israel was very quick to respond - called back within an hour and came over to give an estimate that day, and provided an estimate on the spot. He estimate wasn't the cheapest, but I went with him because his crew was able to do everything I needed, including: carpet padding replacement (which other handymen I called didn't do), drywall repair, replacing some door looks, getting an outside light working, and repairing some door hinges. The door that got re-hinged really needed a new frame (a very expensive job, that I wanted to avoid), but Israel said they could seal it better than it was sealed currently. His team did an ok job of this, but I had push them to do a bit better than they did when they first showed it to me, and it felt a bit rushed as they were wrapping on at 5:30 on a friday afternoon. Wow, what a mess. Twice they have canceled on me at the last minute - today after I spent all day waiting at home for the handyman to show up. The one time I successfully used this service, the guy spent the whole time talking about (another) dissatisfied customer who refused to pay because they did such a bad job painting and wallpapering. I would seriously recommend trying elsewhere. This place worked okay for me in the past (mediocre wallpaper job, wall-mounted TV in my old apartment that actually started pulling away from the wall) but seem to have gone pretty far downhill pretty fast. read more

I hired DC Handyman last month to replace and paint water-damaged wood on the columns of my porch. They did a very good job replacing the wood with PVC. I hired Miguel, Alex and Rolando again to replace and paint water-damaged wood on the front of the my home, redo crumblig grout on my front porch and walkway, and drill and replace cement in large cracks in front of my garage. This review is a couple of months overdue, but still relevant. Moshe from DC Handyman was super responsive and had great suggestions for our project. We were able to schedule a time for him to come to our place so he could see the space and a couple of odd furniture configurations that would have been hard to explain over the phone or via email. We needed to paint the walls of our place and retile the backsplash in our kitchen. The cost was fair and the work was done professionally and in quick fashion. To paint our two bedrooms, our living room, and retile the kitchen backsplash took two days. We were concerned about paint fumes, but there were none!
