My bathroom renovation took almost a YEAR because every affordable contractor bailed on me, and all of the other contractors who gave me quotes wanted an outrageous amount of money. (I have a 30 sq. ft. bathroom, and just wanted new tile installed, along with a new vanity and new toilet--and I provided all of the materials myself). I finally found a plumber to install the toilet and vanity, but still needed a contractor to do the floor. I received estimates up to $2600 for labor only. It was insane. I was seriously considering watching a bunch of YouTube videos and DIYing this (which would not have ended well) when I stumbled on DC Handyman. I sat on this review, and debated about posting it, but my interaction with Israel rubbed me the wrong way. I am researching for a series of improvement projects around the house. I sent DC Handyman an inquiry in the afternoon, received an email response from a female colleague about an hour later and a call from Israel around 8pm. Awesome follow-up. To make a long story short, I shared with Israel that my primary project was to have a TV feature wall installed (pre fab shelving/floating console or a custom option) (I believed he only skimmed my inquiry and did not understand the full jist). I also shared that if that project went well and I trusted the contractor/services I'd be interested in focusing on a kitchen/bathroom and other/misc (electrical) work (but I wanted to get seprate estimates for those services). I am also a single woman and have experienced a number of 'shams' ( Side note: a few years ago I got a paint job done and its AMAZING how many contractors tried to overcharge me for the service. I eventually found a great painter (see: Hill Custom Decorators) but I also learned that many folks unfortunately lack integrity.) in the DC area so I proceed cautiously with these sort of services and make it a point of not tackling a large project (from my perspective) at once unless I have a solid trust/relationship in place or a personal reference. Israel took offense (apparently) to my inclusion of the word 'trust' and decided to share that I should "check his reviews" (Of course, I read the reviews! That's what prompted me to send an inquiry in the first place. I was very hopeful.) and that my job "was a very small job" for him and that he has "$220,000 jobs and builds homes from the ground up". Now, those words offended me and I shared with Israel that I was offended and the reason I contacted him in the first place was because of the reviews on work he'd done on various small projects. Now, after our call I went back to Israel's/DC Handyman's Yelp page to make sure I didn't make a mistake (because sometimes I do and I'd been reading up on a number of potential contractors so maybe I mistakenly sent an inquiry to him by mistake not noticing that he "builds houses" and doesn't work on small jobs) and earnestly looked for reviews on projects where he has "built houses from the ground up" or "$220000" type contracts. And this is a sampling of what I saw (I read ALL the reviews): 5/16/2016 "Israel and Henry did a great job sealing the shower and fixing the cracks in our new home. Sir, every single review on your Yelp page is for so- called "small projects". The gall! During our phone call, Israel did acknowledge the "mis-understanding" of my inclusion of 'trust' and I shared that I appreciated his acknowledgement and that I am well researched because I don't wont to waste my time either. Still, I wasn't going to write this review but after re-reading his Yelp page I think I'd be remiss if I didn't. I'm not sure why in the world he needed to "grandstand" for me. The quote he shared for the other services was actually quite fair and within my budget. Moshe walked me through every step of the process from buying the floor, deciding on stairs, and even helping me pick paints. I am a touch OCD about detail flaws and, honestly, I noticed very few. So after 2 new set of stairs, new flooring on two levels, painting throughout the house, I am having DC Handyman back to do a new back splash in the kitchen later this week. Superb professionals! We asked DC Handyman to remove all the textured ceilings in our new house. Our first contact was with Chasity, the secretary. She gives a great first impression of DC Handyman! She is very friendly, helpful and responsive. They sent us Miguel and his team, Ronaldo, Alex and Jamiro. Miguel was very nice, super accessible, answered all our questions (he even participate in a conference call with my in-laws to explain some of the issues of the project), and kept us always informed about the progress of the project. The project was specially challenging because we were only able to start it after we had already moved in. The team made all possible efforts to minimize the disturbances to our normal day life. That meant, for instance, every day, by the end of the day, cleaning up all the area they were working on - clean the floor with a wet cloth, remove all plastic that was covering the furniture, and move some furniture - so we could use that area during the evening. The people who spent more time in the project were Ronaldo and Alex. They were very friendly and with a cheer disposition. Ronaldo gave us advice and taught us some techniques to address other issues we have with the house. I was super impressed and I would recommend them without any reservation! read more

They promptly responded to my initial inquiry within a day, and over the next few days kept the ball rolling in providing an estimate and scheduling the work. Gil has done quite a few jobs in my home and I've been satisfied every time! Ranging in jobs small- large, he always does great work. The first few times I used DC Handyman was for minor jobs like running wires for the TV (from basement to upstairs), assembling a large, entertainment center, etc.). After seeing his great work, I hired him and his team to remodel 2 bathrooms, and paint the interior and exterior walls of my home. The guys have been outstanding! If I could give a 0, it would be too generous. We hired these guys to fix water leaks on our threshold and the roof and paid thousands of dollars. Less than 6mths later the leaks got worst. I called to report the problem, Israel showed up to look at it. When he left, he said someone would be back that wknd. That was a yr ago and no one EVER answered the endless voice messages and emails I left. They charge us by the hour - when they worked here, the crew disappeared for 3hrs. When they came back, I asked what happened, I was told that they were at home depot looking for materials even though they showed up empty handed. I made sure that we were not billed for that 3hrs. These dudes are bad news - I started calling again because I'm looking a the damaged ceiling from the roof leaks so I decided to call because I honestly thought they went out of business because of no answer all previous attempts. This time, someone answered to tell me the work was out of warranty. Beware consumers, this is their game - crappy work and disappearing act until the warranty is over. I thought the price exhorbitant to put up a range hood, install faucet ( plumbing already present), install 3 floor transitions and one short baseboard- over 1000$! Mind you, the materials were not included in this price! I can see needing 2 men to install range hood as it's heavy, but the second guy just stood around most of the time.
