Responded very quickly and offered to come the same day, on a Saturday, no less, so we appreciated that. We needed curtains hung. I had started the job myself but got an anchor screw stuck and figured I should have a pro step in so I didn't wreck my new walls. All the supplies were here, placed where they needed to be, holes were measured and marked for custom made rods and drapes. He charges by the hour and moves very, very slow. He didn't have his own step ladder or anchor screws. In the first hour, he managed to put in 3 screws in holes that had already been marked. He claimed he "needed to remeasure" and that's why it took so long, but he used the holes that I had already marked. He also said it was too hard to do with custom cut rods. He also said it wasn't his fault because I had an anchor screw stuck in the wall already, which was the whole reason I hired him. This is what pros do: they come prepared, know the required materials and techniques, and advise the customer on the best way to proceed. I knew we needed to cut it off when he asked me how to use an anchor screw. He didn't know if you needed to pre-drill or not for a very basic and common anchor. I cannot imagine a professional handyman not knowing that. He used a level to stare at the pre-marked holes for what seemed like an eternity, just eating up time. 3 screws = $200. Seems like a nice enough man, but handyman may not be the profession for him, and that's giving him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't just trying to take advantage of someone he assumed was too naive too know how long the job should take. He became very defensive, making excuses when I said we'd need to end the job at one hour. Im sure judging by other less than 5 star reviews here (that I really wish I'd have taken the time to read) he will post a very defensive response here as well. Please just don't take a job you don't have the required expertise to complete, and I don't want to hear defensive excuses when I'm still out $200 for almost no work completed. read more

I reached out to Phillip on Friday about installing 2 large bar shelves and a large bar mirror. He said he could do it Saturday morning after 9am. I am writing this review expressing my total satisfaction with Philip's Design and Mr. Philips himself. Project: Replacement of Attic Stairs When I was first looking for a Handyman I was scrolling through all the Handyman that where close to my area. I was specifically looking for someone who would respond quickly with an interest to take on the project within the same weekend. Mr. Philip answer my email within minutes and he made himself available that following weekend. We schedule an appointment the following Saturday at 1:00pm, he arrive on time with all equipment on deck ready to start working. Mr. Phillip immediately assessed the situation upon arrival and started working on removing all pieces around the attic stairs and the stair themselves. The entire work took roughly about 3 1/2 hours, and it where beautifully done. I will tell you that he continuously clean before, during and after leaving no mess at all, very clean individual. I do want to add that his process consist of $170.00 for the initial visit and $90.00 for any hour after that. As I sat there next to him he never gave me the feeling that he was killing time, he was engaged the whole until the project was complete. I strongly recommend Philip Design has a Handyman. This review is for Philip's designs. He showed up at 8pm and went straight to assembling my Ikea Frihetan Sofa that came in three boxes. He then fixed my besta cabinet doors because I assembled it originally but the doors came out crooked. Philip then anchored my shoe cabinet to the wall. Some screws came out of my shoe cabinet drawers and he helped himself to fixing that by screwing in the necessary hardware. Another great plus because I had no idea-I'm a huge dumb dumb when it comes to assembling furniture. Philip then attached a magnetic catch to my cat's litter box cabinet so now the door shuts. Previously I had hurt my back dealing with the besta cabinet so I now leave moving and assembly to the professionals. I really do not understand the good reviews on this site. We hired Philip to install a weather strip and a hinged door closer on our front door. I specifically told him that I wanted to fix two problems: 1) Cold air coming in through the bottom of the door 2) The door not being able to close properly due to the missing door closer He quoted us $200 to do both jobs. He arrived with one door closer. At the end of the job, he told me that one door closer should be fine, but it would be better to have two -- one on the top and one on the bottom. He hadn't mentioned this before when he saw photos of the door, nor did he offer to pick up another one (at my expense) and finish the job. Based on all of the good reviews on this site, I assumed that since he only installed one closer and said it should work, that it would do the job. He did not at any time say that the closer would probably break. If so, why would he leave it like that and not finish the job? He is supposed to be a professional. He left my house in total disarray and did not clean up the mess from the installation (there were screws, sawed off weather strip pieces, pieces of plastic, wood/dust, etc. all over my couch and floor). I was caring for my newborn twins at the time and could not believe how unprofessional it was for him to leave my house like that. Nevertheless, based on the YELP reviews, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was in a hurry. Less than three months after the installation, the door closer broke off. My husband tried to screw it back in, but it had completely come loose and the holes were now too big for the screws. I contacted Philip and asked him to please come fix it, and told him I assumed it would be at no charge since his work broke within 3 months. He replied that I should have installed two door closers, not one, and that one alone was insufficient in an area with wind. (? - I live in Chevy Chase DC, not Chicago.) If it was the case the two closers were necessary to fix the second problem I hired him for, wouldn't a true handyman, who cares about his work and reputation, come and fix the job that he did not do correctly the first time by his own admission? Laughably, he offered me a "discount" of $150 to install a second door closer on the bottom of the door. The first door closer job could not have been more than $100, since the weather strip was by far the bigger job, took longer, and required more labor (it was $200 total for both of those jobs). In short, do NOT hire Philip if you want a job done professionally and correctly for a fair price. read more

While I can't speak to Philip's (Phil) actual work, I'm leaving this review to speak to the customer service I received from Phil today. I sent an inquiry to Phil late last night regarding some repairs I want made to a dry wall (did not previously know that was the appropriate term for my request) and bathtub/tile reglazing (again, another term I wasn't aware applied to my needs) in my DC condo. Not only was Phil extremely timely with his replies (usually within about 15 minutes), but instead of just agreeing to take on the job he was honest and suggested I reach out to dry wall contractors and tile refinishers who would be the best people for the work. This is not to say that other handymen would take on a request that doesn't quite fit their skills and do a lackluster job, but if Phil had I wouldn't have known any better (let's just say I wasn't born with the gift of fixing things). I really appreciated Phil's truthfulness and recommendations for utilizing other contractors who are more suitable to complete the tasks needed, and I think that speaks to his professionalism. I hired him to replace the bottom of a kitchen cabinet that had rotted out due to water damage. He brought a piece of plywood that was too thick and just cut it to overlay the bottom of the cabinet. Meh, good enough I guess but not quite what I had in mind. That should have taken all of 10 minutes for a professional but Philip dragged it out for an hour. He was meticulous with the job, prepared, and capable of making adjustments when things weren't straightforward. He hung two curtain rods for me; addressing complications when the window arrangement meant we couldn't have a middle bracket and the apartment complex construction limited where we could place one of the brackets. Project one: Microwave - our microwave wasn't installed correctly and he was able to help install it the right way and get it up and running perfectly.
