Martin, the installation angel! We moved into a new place in Capitol Hill in the beginning of August. The place was adorable as most Capitol Homes are but also quite tiny. We didn't have any storage so our entire premise for moving in was built around being able to hang our bikes on the room in our den. Upon moving in we quickly learned that the walls were a mix of plaster and brick and too difficult for us to work with. I was completely distraught not knowing what we'd do. We found Martin and he was like angel sent from above and solved all of our installation woes. I called him and got his voicemail which instructed me to email him. I emailed him, left a voicemail the next day as a reminder and then he got back to me by email. His prices were around what others were charging (a little less which was a perk) but what sold us was that he had availability a few days later. He confirmed he was coming the day before and let me know by text when he was on his way. He worked quickly and cleaned up each room when he was done. We had him install 3 bike shelves plus 7 other things in total. Along the way he found plaster, dry wall, wood, cinder block, and brick. Martin made our home exactly how we wanted it to be. Is it possible to give more than 5 stars? Martin was the consummate professional, very knowledgeable and easy to work with. My wife and I hired Martin to complete a marble tiled back splash in our apartment in Adams Morgan. The job was somewhat involved and required Martin to visit our house twice (one day to hang the tile and the second day to grout the tile). After an easy email negotiation, Martin arrived promptly on our agreed upon day. After some discussion and Martin measuring the area to be tiled we concluded my wife and I had under-bought on tile required to complete the job. Instead of increasing his fee or becoming visibly frustrated Martin re-scheduled and assured us we weren't the first people to fall victim to such a bone headed rookie mistake. Once we were able to procure the correct amount of tile, Martin returned and executed the job to perfection. Despite some issues with the original construction of our apartment (increasing the degree of difficulty for the back splash), Martin was able to hang a level and visually stunning back splash. The tile vendor recommended a saw blade that left a jagged chipped edge along the cut. After Martin determined the vendor recommendation wasn't producing an acceptable cut, Martin tried four saw blades on two saws before he finally figured out how to make the cuts without any chipping. Martin clearly takes pride in his work. I'm very thankful that he was persistent enough to figure out how to perfectly cut my glass tiles. Martin is professional, polite, easy to work with and does great work. I found him on here after deciding that I really wasn't ready to handle tiling the kitchen by myself. The only negative reviews where about him not returning calls, so I chose to email him. He responded later that day and was very flexible and willing to work with my crazy schedule and his being busy to set-up two days that worked for both of us. He even came out early in the morning so he could be set up before I left for work. He locked up when he left and I came home to a beautiful new back splash in the kitchen. Martin also noticed that the cabinets in my kitchen were crooked, so for an extra small fee, he rehung them. It's amazing how great the kitchen looks now! My boyfriend and I live in a condo that we rent from an owner. It's a lovely place with big windows taking up almost half of the outer walls in the living room and bedroom. We look down onto a park and people watch from the comfort of our couch. Plants line the sills, drinking in the morning sunshine. Unfortunately there is also a street light directly below our bedroom window and the morning sun that our plants love gives us nothing but angst at 6am. Blinds do very little to mitigate the frustrating, constant brightness. Sleep masks are only a partial solution as they tend to be torn off and thrown mid-sleep. We found construction-paper blackout "blinds" that taped to the window frame. Those fell down the first night. Yay for condensation. We thought that we couldn't DO curtains because of how little wall there is surrounding the windows. There is nowhere to anchor the curtain rods (or so we thought). Our attempts to hang curtain rods from the ceiling were laughable (also:messy). We'd just about given up when I idly stumbled across Martin's Yelp page here. All of the reviews are true (except for the guy who says Martin doesn't call back. He does!). This guy is great. I don't know what ninja skills he used to install our curtain rods, but they were up in less than an hour. Then Martin fixed a light fixture in the bathroom. For funsies. Now my boyfriend and I live in luxurious, velvety darkness, courtesy of Martin and our blackout curtains. He's a good one, folks. Martin is a family-man who is currently working as a handyman. In my experience he is friendly, knowledgeable, physically strong (necessary for some jobs), easy to work with, prompt and reliable. In my previous apartment I had my heavy Plasma TV mounted on a Peerless PLA-1 articulating arm. The mounting plate that the arm comes with is for 16-inch wall studs but my new apartment has 24-inch studs. I ordered an adapter plate from Peerless (which has great customer service BTW) and it arrived with all kinds of hardware. I stared at it for a bit and then threw my mental hands up in the air. Finally I hit up Yelp for some help and found Martin. I sent him an email and a few days later followed up with another. He soon responded and told me that he was on vacation and had limited access to email. When he returned I got in touch with him and he suggested he come by the very next day at 8:30 AM, which was great for me. Martin arrived on time (keeping me up to date with texts) and with all of his gear. We discussed where I wanted the TV. Then he did a superior job setting up the wall mount and even drilled some holes in the metal plate itself when the plate didn't match my existing mount (a danger when you are a first adopter of technology, my plate is an older model than the one Peerless is currently selling). He put together the articulating arm (which I had taken apart for the move). He unerringly drilled holes in the drywall and used Peerless' special pieces to install the mounting plate. He attached the arm to the TV and then we both heaved it up and he connected the arm to the plate. When it was finished he expressed some concern about the weight of the TV on this drywall and told me that if I had any problems that I should call him. A week later he followed up with an email asking if everything was fine! Which it is. Martin is very competent and communicative.I totally recommend him if you need some work done in your house or apartment. read more

I needed some extra shelves built in my pantry, and I also needed about 15 pieces of art to be hung all around my home, including a large gallery wall. Martin's communication was excellent over email. We figured out the dimensions of my pantry cabinet so he could purchase enough material for shelves before he arrived. He got to my house on time despite my neighborhood's tough parking situation, and he got all the jobs done in about 3 hours, for a very reasonable price.
