Martin Ondrejcak - Laundry and mud room remodeling

Capitol Hill

Martin, the installation angel!…read more We moved into a new place in Capitol Hill in the beginning of August. The place was adorable as most Capitol Homes are but also quite tiny. We didn't have any storage so our entire premise for moving in was built around being able to hang our bikes on the room in our den. Upon moving in we quickly learned that the walls were a mix of plaster and brick and too difficult for us to work with. I was completely distraught not knowing what we'd do. We found Martin and he was like angel sent from above and solved all of our installation woes. I called him and got his voicemail which instructed me to email him. I emailed him, left a voicemail the next day as a reminder and then he got back to me by email. His prices were around what others were charging (a little less which was a perk) but what sold us was that he had availability a few days later. He confirmed he was coming the day before and let me know by text when he was on his way. He worked quickly and cleaned up each room when he was done. We had him install 3 bike shelves plus 7 other things in total. Along the way he found plaster, dry wall, wood, cinder block, and brick. Martin made our home exactly how we wanted it to be. If you live in an old home and feel wary about hanging things, give Martin a call!

I want to sincerely thank Alan and his team, Marlon and Emmanuel, for taking such great care of us…read moreduring our home renovations. In July/August, we experienced a ceiling leak that caused significant damage throughout our home, impacting two bathrooms, the playroom, entryway hallway, and laundry room. After water mitigation and demolition were completed, we were left needing extensive repairs and full remodels of the affected areas. This was our first time dealing with a major home issue, and navigating insurance, contractors, and conflicting opinions felt overwhelming and stressful. I spoke with several contractors and received multiple estimates, but Alan stood out immediately. He was the first to respond and the first to give clear, straightforward, and honest answers. Beyond that, Alan is genuinely such a fun and easygoing person to work with, which made a stressful situation feel much more manageable. He has a great eye for design and prioritizes top-notch materials while still being realistic and respectful of budget. He guided us through the design process, helped with material selection, and made thoughtful recommendations every step of the way. Marlon and Emmanuel are incredibly knowledgeable, respectful, and truly kind. They treated our home with care and always took the time to explain what they were doing, which made us feel confident and at ease throughout the process. Fast forward to today, we finally have our home back -- and we couldn't be happier with the results! Not having functional bathrooms and access to certain rooms for months took a toll on our family and our mental health. Click Construction stepped in during a very difficult time and helped restore not just our home, but our peace of mind. My only regret is not finding them sooner. I've attached before-and-after photos so you can see the incredible transformation for yourself. I highly recommend Click Construction to anyone looking for quality work, honesty, and a team that truly cares.

When we bought our almost 100 year old Wardman rowhouse in Woodley Park in 2000, it needed a new…read morekitchen, and a new kitchen meant an opportunity to install a half-bath on the main level that the Wardmans never had. However, the logistics of a renovation kept us from proceeding year after year. In 2015, after eleven years of renters, the house could no longer withstand the wear and tear, and we contacted Eric Goetz at Blue Star who came highly recommended from a friend who was very familiar with what it takes to do a successful DC renovation. We had spent 15 years trying to figure out how to seamlessly add a bathroom where one never existed. Blue Star's design team improved upon our ideas and helped us transform our first floor into an updated, functional space while retaining the 1920's character of the house. The bigger challenge for our renovation was timing. We needed the project completed in the one month that our tenants would be away on vacation. The renovation was complex - extend the short porch at the back to the house to the shared property line, move the rear entry to the other side, convert a small hall closet into a half-bath, install a new modern kitchen and enlarge it into the porch area, and replace the original hardwood floors. No one including other workmen and the above-mentioned friend thought this work could get done successfully in the limited time we had. No one except Blue Star. Eric and his team worked with us from start to finish to ensure that everything was in place (permits, materials, subcontractors) so that work could begin on the first day and be complete before the tenants returned. Blue Star worked through the inevitable bumps in the road, unexpected complications, and incredibly did it all in 21 days! We now have a new kitchen that is bright, light and open, beautiful new floors, and a sleek powder room for guests. Even more important was how great it was to work with Eric and his team. They were never flustered, even though our tenant made things more difficult than anyone could imagine, including pushing the work off for another year, and, yes, the police were involved. Blue Star stood by us and worked collaboratively. They were transparent about everything that needed to be done and how it got done, and kept us up to date on almost a daily basis with the work's progress as we were not in DC for most of the project's planning and execution. Blue Star knows DC building requirements inside out and worked through all the city's bureaucracy unfazed. They are also incredible problem solvers as old DC houses can throw all kinds of issues at you once the drywall comes down. Blue Star came in on budget and ahead of a very, very tight and critical schedule. We highly recommend them to anyone considering a renovation.

Eye roll. What a clown show. Well here's the update that I promised, unfortunately it's not in the direction I was hoping. I got an immediate response to my review below, with multiple requests to remove the review. I stated that I was open to updating or removing it, if things improved, and we ended up having a couple positive meetings. So much so that we elected to continue to work with them on the next phase of the project. So over the weekend (Sept 12-13), they sent us the contract for the next phase. We signed it and sent over the requested payment. I was hopeful! I was mentally drafting a positive update to this review! On Monday I received acknowledgement of receipt of the signed contract. Immediately following that, I got an email that said, and I quote "Before we can resume, please remove the Yelp review so we can start fresh and have a positive experience moving forward as we help you with your project." Guys, my jaw DROPPED. (My husband sent me a simultaneous "WHAT THE F***" text lol) Let me reiterate, we had signed the contract, sent the payment, and THEN received an email saying they wouldn't begin the work until a brand new condition had been met. We were completely floored. But okay, I thought, benefit of the doubt, the guy that sent that email has the position of junior assistant on the website, maybe he doesn't realize that what he's doing - withholding work that has been paid for unless we meet a new requirement that we never agreed to - constitutes a word that rhymes with shmextortion. So I responded that this requirement is unethical, inappropriate, and possibly a breach of contract. I gave him every opportunity to walk it back, and then reached out directly to the firm owner to verify that this was in fact the position that Bitarchitects was taking. The only response I got is that we can terminate the agreement, so that's what we did. To their credit, they processed the refund relatively quickly. So yeah, I don't know. I can only speak to my experience, of course. The other positive reviews indicate that other people have had better experiences with them. But this all does make me wonder if other reviews have been manipulated in a similar manner. So caveat emptor I guess. Because I fully expect they will respond and try to spin this in some way that makes me look like I'm the unreasonable one, I'm attaching screenshots of the actual email exchange (just the initial exchange, because the junior assistant started texting me after that email and it went on for a while, until I went back to email to contact the owner). Redacting names and email addresses as a professional courtesy.
