Hiring Mustafa Khaliqy was a huge mistake:  his promotional representations were not true, his negligence caused me to go way beyond my budget and our contracted price, and his workers damaged my house through sub-par performance.  In short, my experience on hiring Mustafa was that it felt like he vandalized my house for tens of thousands of dollars, and for that pleasure I got to deal with an incompetent, angry, and defensive wholly unsuited to the job and to the profession. First, Mustafa's dishonesty:  Mustafa held himself out as an architect, and I relied on that in deciding to hire him for my renovation project.  But Mustafa is not an architect.  He holds no such credential and is not licensed to engage in business as an architect.  Mustafa also misrepresented his DC contractor license number to me.  Had he displayed the correct number, I would have seen a previous citation for improper work.  Mustafa appears to pay people to post reviews.  I fell for these reviews.  I got suckered in and it feels awful. Mustafa had trouble finding crews to perform work on my project as it went along, and it became clear as the project dragged on that he does not have a network of teams to work with.  He apparently hires workers through Craigslist--workers with whom he has not had any previous interaction, based on what these workers told me. The people who Mustafa sent to my house destroyed my floor and many of the cabinets I had ordered.  Mustafa promised to reimburse me for these losses but has not made good on any of these promises. Second, Mustafa's incompetence:  Mustafa, as the "architect," general contractor, and manager of the project, instructed me on the timing of materials to buy for the project.  He had me order cabinets before demolition took place, and he rebuilt the walls such that the cabinets no longer fit the space.  As a result, I had to re-order essentially another set of cabinets.  What a waste of time and money!  Third, Mustafa's workers:  Based on what I've seen and experienced with the contractors I hired before and after Mustafa, many of Mustafa's people performed work of the lowest quality.  These workers destroyed thousands of dollars worth of cabinets and floor tiles.  Floors were unevenly laid, random holes were cut in cabinets, electrical and gas lines were incorrectly installed, and even some of our materials disappeared.  Paying Mustafa for this work felt like an insult.   Finally, you should know that as far as I'm concerned Mustafa abandoned the project.  He ran out of money to pay his workers, and after that, nobody showed up to work at my house.  My bottom line review:  Don't hire Mustafa! Update: During the time I hired Mustafa, my experience was that he was consistently dishonest. His comment now is line with those experiences: he abandoned the project and I answered the emails he is referring to on Feb. 17, March 14, and March 22 to let him know that the BS and bad faith offers were no longer acceptable. All of these pictures were taken after he abandoned the project (kitchen renovation that was going into its fifth month) when we had to hire an entire new contractor to clean up his mess--literally and figuratively. Mustafa's lies in his response to this comment are consistent with his behavior towards me during our entire relationship. I would recommend that anyone reading this take note and expect nothing different from Mustafa. read more

The evidence contradicts your response.  For example, in hiring you, I placed significant reliance on your repeated representations that you were an architect.  Unfortunately, I learned too late that you are not credentialed and licensed as an architect.  So, if you haven't met the credentialing requirements, I believe that calling yourself an architect merely because you took some "architecture" and "interior design" online courses serves nothing more than to promote a scam on trusting homeowners such as myself.  As far as my project being "with permit," because you didn't pull the permits, I have no idea who did the work at my house and whether they were licensed or worked under the supervision of a licensed holder.  Based on the shoddy work you did, it seems as though they weren't licensed. In fact, this sort of practice has been a huge problem in DC and, based on my experience with Mustafa, I recommend that anyone reading this take a look at this article to familiarize yourself with Mustafa's practices: https://wamu.org/story/16/07/13/permitting_problems_do_you_know_who_s_working_on_your_house_in_dc_it_s_not_clear/. Also, at the time you abandoned the project, the electrical and gas work had not gone through final inspection, and there was considerable work remaining (painting, tile work, cabinet and appliance installation, plumbing, etc.).  It has cost me considerable time and expense to find a contractor, fix your mistakes, and finish up the remainder of the work.  In fact, if your work is so good, why is it necessary for you to pay people to market your services (see attached photos)? Why do you use photos from other businesses trying to pass off their work as your own?  It was easy for me to do a Google image search to confirm this. Finally, it's incredulous that, given the amount of property damage you've caused and the numerous previous opportunities you've rejected to make things right, you're actually proposing yet a fifth crew to work at my house. So my review stands.  And to prove how genuine and serious this matter is, I've filed a complaint under oath with DCRA and the DC Attorney General that repeats the comments I've made in my review. read more

We couldn't have asked for better service/ work. My husband and I have opposite work schedules and communicating via email was important so we could both follow along with the project (adding an overhang to our roof). All responses were very quick (even on weekends). We had questions mid project and were able to chat on the phone quickly. Later, we had questions about material used and those were answered promptly and we were satisfied with the answers. If you are having roof work done I would note to move anything (such as path lights) you wouldn't want damaged as they are climbing ladders/ have heavy equipment. Cover plants if you care about them - we did have a plant crushed under a ladder but it wasn't a major deal to us. The price point was fair and the crew that came out arrived early and completed the job in much less time than anticipated. We wouldn't hesitate to hire again for future projects.
