Apparently only the owner of the company, Rafael, can only schedule projects on Fridays but he's not available most Fridays to chat. Not the person you start the project with. She can't schedule projects. I really regret going with FKBD for the project. I especially regret it because I paid a premium for the labor, and decided to go with this company vs another younger, cheaper company (VA Creative Renovations - Chris is great - check them out) because I thought they would be on top of the project and get it done quickly and get it done well. Apparently not. There was a lack of follow through and communication. When I did ask for timing and submitted my tile choices with Susan, who was my project manager, she had to call over to Rafael, then he'd call me all grumpy for interrupting his day. Seems like there's a control issue. Then when the project was supposed to start there was an issue with the tile I originally chose, even though I had submitted my design choices weeks prior. They said there was a delay with the tile and they had to change the project start date. Meanwhile I'm trying to coordinate with my tenants. Luckily they are the nicest tenants anyone can ask for. All in all they did a great job on my bathroom - eventually. You just need to be really on top of them.

This was confirmed by independent inspectors that we hired and the County of Fairfax Permit Department. Below are some highlights. -Multiple Code Violations for electrical, plumbing and structural issues. -Multiple leaks with ceiling damage. -Our master bath had to be demolished 3 times for them to resolve issues that they generated. -Over 100 issues between the 3 bathrooms. Some were cosmetic others were very major and required demolition. KBR is inept, unprofessional and performed outright illegal/unsafe work. A few days later, his workers showed up, unannounced, asking what they needed to do. I told them I have no idea, and my husband is not home, and to coordinate a time with him. A few days later (on a Sunday), they showed up unannounced again! My husband was out again! They asked me to pick a paint color and I asked if that is included in the price we were quoted and they said they didn't know. As I was trying to figure that out, it came out that they don't think repairing the stairs is a good idea and they can't even guarantee they won't break again for even 3 days. I asked if it would be a lot more expensive to redo the whole thing and they said it would be exponentially more expensive. I told them we'll talk to Alex and get back to them. 30 minutes later, Alex calls my husband screaming at him! He told him that we shouldn't ask his contractors about prices and that he doesn't work that way and that we should find someone else to work with and hung up the phone on my husband! He was literally screaming at my husband on the phone. And then hung up on him. There are so many issues with our experience starting with the fact that the workers kept showing up without prior notice and asking a lot of questions as if they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. And then of course the fact that he was trying to scam us into doing something that he knew might not even last the week. And then finally, calling my husband and screaming at him and hanging up on him because his workers were asking us a lot of questions?! It's just been an atrocious experience. I recommend avoiding him at all costs. UPDATE: Alex is now threatening my husband over text messages because of our review. We are just stating facts. He said we are inappropriate to contact him on a Sunday when it was his contractors who showed up at our doorstep, unannounced, on a Sunday, and we were just calling to clear things up with him because they had no idea what they were supposed to do and were asking me a lot of questions. He also accused us of trying to strike a deal with his subcontractors, something that didn't cross our minds for one second. We were just trying to figure out if the paint his contractors were making me choose was included in the estimate he provided us.

Lofft was not the cheapest estimate I received but based on my meeting with Alex and previous reviews, I decided to hire them for my work. Very happy with my decision. The project began and ended exactly on schedule. Eric and Freddie were easy to work with, dependable, did a fantastic job and kept the worksite clean during the project. I'm going to redo my master bath and will look to Lofft to do the project. I'd give them six stars if the system allowed.

A small business with poor customer service. Our impression was that they were over-extended, but…read morewe realized this was not the problem. The job site staff were great. The design was excellent. At times, it felt like a struggle to get answers about the process and schedules. Then problems arise: a new staff person without skilled professional experience was sent to work on the painting. He left damage and a mess for other regular staff to repair the next day. This was only resolved when we demanded that no further work be done until the damage was corrected. The owner was planned to send the same employee back with someone else the next day. He stated they "would assess after." He stopped into the house the day it happened, and saw part of the mess, but left the employee there alone. We had to push for something when it should have been obvious to the owner what the right thing was to do upon damage (for example: sloppily painting over areas that needed patching/sanding, not using drop cloths and getting paint on the new floor, door frames/accessories and surfaces, painting adjustable melamine shelving so they stuck to the walls and supports, and using the wrong paint type on surfaces). We lost two days of work from that. The shelves had to be replaced. We always received excuses and contradictory explanations, for any issue or inquiry, to what really occurred or was stated. Furthermore, communication problems persisted. Staff didn't keep each other informed about specifics to the job. Office staff actually made excuses or statements that indicated what was on paper didn't matter. Several inquires were ignored. The owner had excuses for everything. When a customer is paying on time, and honoring a contract, they better care, and know about the job specifics. That is what they are being paid to do. We honored the contract fully and engaged with the owner because we liked the work until then. We were at the junction where small finishes and the final payment were due. A staff member flushed blue contractor paper towels down the toilet. We found out when our system backed up on a Saturday a few days afterward, and sewage flowed out of the lower level, into the garage and down the driveway. We couldn't use our plumbing and had to have an emergency plumber come out. He showed photos of the blue paper towels from the scope camera that were in the pipes out front of the house. They blocked the drainage and back-flowed into the toilet downstairs anytime plumbing was used anywhere in the house. This bill was $868.00. It took the weekend to clean up. We presented the bill and photos to the owner. He agreed to pay for it. Then the final construction statement increased and the accounting for this was murky. There was an over $800 increase on the labor side without explanation. Only the materials were itemized, and a some final items increased without clear itemization. After running numbers for both labor and materials from the estimate, compared to the final total, 75% was labor and not itemized. When we demanded this to be itemized, the owner refused. When questioned about why a door was priced at almost double and incorrectly identified as a double panel when it was a single, the owner referred to labor for the door-after stating labor is not itemized. He offered no justification for any unexplained labor increase. Stopping short at calling the lack of transparency suspect is being generous. Being over-extended or disorganized doesn't defend charges that don't add up on the final tally. My spouse is a PhD in math. Numbers don't lie. We were prepared to retain an attorney when the owner refused to clarify and itemize expenses and refused to provide receipts and itemization for those increases. He offered a 5% discount on the final project total, plus reimbursement for the plumbing fiasco. We accepted and paid the final amount. We were sick of dealing with them. The owner always had his own version of what occurred. This isn't about COVID issues. It's about an owner not taking accountability. UPDATE as of 2/2021: No permits were ever filed for any part of this job, like the owner was supposed to do, until we found out in January 2021. The job finished in November 2020. The owner actually replied that he thought we wanted the job done without permits. Note this is a licensed contractor who "completed" a professional job without permits. Worse, he actually tried to shake us down for $500 more to file the permit applications. His justification was that permits were never a line item in the contract. If the reader has fully read this review, it was noted that he could not and flat-out refused to provide documentation for questionable increases, and for the labor that was 75% of the bill. My spouse reminded him of this, and he filed the permits after we also informed him that we spoke directly with the permit office. STEER CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY. The owner is dishonest.

Anyways, I spoke with Chris the GC for TBC. He's a personable guy who gives you answers straight. My fence was damaged from the high winds we encountered a month or so ago. Thus, I needed a new stretch of 113 feet of fence ASAP (that 113 feet of fence was probably put in 25 years ago). I was able to take a photo of the fence, give him the fence length and he shot me an estimate. It was that simple. The gents that TBC subcontracts to build fences are some great guys. They worked their butts off and the quality of that work was OUTSTANDING. I felt no need to make suggestions for improvement during or after the fence build. They cleaned the work site in a surgical manner. They even built extra part of the fence that wasn't part of the estimate because it was necessary to get the job done right (I'm not going to explain...as long as I understand it then that's all that matters). So, TBC is a GO for any folks looking for a good price and quality work to be done. We will be looking to TBC for future work to be done on the interior of the house.

A detailed quote was received, with a payment schedule. A general completion time of 4 weeks was given, as well. Unfortunately, the new HVAC system was being installed at the same time, and ran into issues that caused extra holes in the drywall ceiling in the lower level to need patching, as well as a door trim, wall, etc. This was not the fault of TBC, and I asked for a quote on how much extra this would cost. Once TBC began work, I noticed a few things that concerned me. There were only 2 workers. The two workers that were here only came out for a few hours each day, and only worked in the hall bath. I do not understand why that they couldn't/didn't try to work on more than one thing at a time once the HVAC crews were out of the way. Eventually, they were a week behind. As a result, my kitchen cabinets were delivered a full week before the kitchen was started - and that is when the rain started. Since I have no garage, the cabinets were sitting in my open carport. I sent an email with my concerns. He tried to blame the delay on the "extra" things they had to do: removing the tub, and opening the shower door opening a little in the lower bath. I responded that those things wouldn't take an extra WEEK. I kept asking for a quote to add the painting to the job. After asking several times, he finally replied that his painter was unavailable. I also kept asking for the accessories in the hall bath to get installed - the grab bar/shelves in the bathtub, as well as the towel bars/toilet paper holders, etc. He replied that they typically don't do those things if they aren't the ones painting. I pointed out that the shelves/grab bar in the bathtub area didn't require paint... no reply. The kitchen went beautifully. The cabinets were installed exactly as I had wanted, and the workers did a nice job of getting it done. The microwave was hung rather high, but when I asked for it to be lowered, it sounded like doing so would cause an additional delay... so I gave up. Meanwhile, I had exchanged emails about getting the drywall patches done. A quote of $2000 to do all the work was sent, and I acknowledged that it was fine. Mr. Eckert and I set an appointment to talk about that on May 19th in the afternoon, after I would get home from teaching. That day, I was expecting to sign the agreement to complete the drywall repair. Instead, he announced that they had completed the existing contract, and that they would not be doing the drywall at all. I was SHOCKED. There had been NO indication from him that he would not be doing this. He offered me the name and phone number of other contractors. He asked for final payment, and left. Afterwards, I started looking around and found other things that weren't quite done properly. I wrote a long email. An excerpt is below: ----------------------------------------------------- 1) There were a couple of SMALL areas in the drywall in the kitchen that could have been patched easily. Instead, they just put the base molding in place, right next to them. 2) the counters were left covered in sawdust. There was also sawdust in the cabinets that I had to vacuum out. 3) The areas of the granite backsplash that extend beyond the tile backsplash didn't even get caulking. There is a gap there on the top and sides. 4) *I* had to ask for the quarter round to be installed in the foyer to finish the floor. Yes, it was hidden from view at that time, but shouldn't there have been a "punchlist" somewhere? 5) I asked at least 3 times about getting the shelving in the shower installed. I sent at least 2 emails about it, one indicating that without the grab bar, my son had fallen in the shower and injured himself. Apparently the safety issue didn't matter. You KNOW it's not something *I* am capable of, SHAME ON YOU. 6) The electrical switch cover in the hall bath never got put on. 7)The "stickers" on the glass shower door downstairs were left for me to peel off. --------------------------------------- After I sent this email to him, I realized two other issues: the dishwasher was not screwed in, so when you open the door, it tilts down. And, in the lower level bathroom, no molding was placed at the baseboard. Granted, that was not SPECIFIED in the contract, but it wasn't specified for the kitchen and other bath, either... those little details aren't things that should have to be specified. The bottom line is that while Mr. Eckert's crew technically met his "contractual obligations", they certainly fell very short of doing a thorough job. They didn't "go the extra mile", and they didn't care. He was cool, but professional, in speaking to me, but he definitely wasn't "friendly", even when I tried to be. I am left with a house that still needs work before I can sell it. Details mean a lot to me, and it was clearly something they didn't care about.

We had floating laminate floors installed less than 5 years ago and there are major gaps in between…read morethe boards in every room we have. When we first used them, they did a shoddy job and had to call and ask them to come back again to fix some trim and molding. They simply glued trim in between our dining room and kitchen and almost immediately it lifted off. Since then, we've had to nail and fix it several times ourselves. I've lived in homes with floating floors before and never had had the issues that we've had with these. The only reason we went with this company is because the previous owner used them to install the kitchen flooring and wanted to match it. (Which they denied that they installed the kitchen floor when I called recently to ask about all the gaps showing up. I have all the historic emails to prove otherwise.)

During a recent home improvement project to install hardwood flooring, I removed the laminate…read moreflooring that was already in place. Upon removal, I noticed that the stairs were not only badly damaged (from a previous owner's work), but were failing in multiple areas when accessed underneath. This was no longer a home improvement project, but now became a safety issue. I contacted Jonathan on a Tuesday afternoon letting him know that we had a staircase that was in need of repair. I reached out to 10 companies (that listed on their Yelp reviews that they offered carpentry) requesting a carpenter or carpentry skills, but only Jonathan and another company indicated that they could repair stairs that were damaged and in need of repair. The other company was not as responsive and indicated that they were fully booked through the summer, and that they didn't have the time. After texting and calling Jonathan throughout the day Tuesday, Jonathan indicated that he would come out the following morning to assess the damage with one of his highly skilled employees. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were timely and direct in what needed addressed. He indicated that we would replace 10 of the 13 treads, and that they would reinforce all of the stairs underneath with 2x4's and other materials. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were not only efficient, timely, and responsive, but the quality exceeded all expectations. Jonathan's carpenter worked nonstop Wednesday (not even a break!) and finished ahead of schedule on Thursday. The high quality work was much more than we had anticipated, and the price was reasonable (considering the urgency and timing). I highly recommend Jonathan and his company. We plan to use them for improvements and projects. Top Notch!
