I've been here many times, the food is always good, but today was drastically different. I was here with some friends around 1, there weren't many people in the restaurant so we could hear this exchange quite clearly. The sushi chef started SHOUTING at our server, not in the back, but ON THE FLOOR. He was shouting at her for a mistake, she was apologizing for it, but he kept shouting for at least 7 MINUTES. COMPLETELY RUINED OUR LUNCH. Everyone in the restaurant was making awkward eye contact with each other when he was yelling at this poor girl. I won't EVER be back to an establishment that treats their employees this way. When she dropped the check off at our table we asked her who he was, apparently he's the owner(I think she said his name was Mr. Young) but it was absolutely unprofessional to be shouting like that. Here's a tip, if you need to chew out an employee take it to the back and not 6 feet away from our table. If you are looking for good sushi and a deal this is the place to go. Their happy hour is from 3-6pm and from 8 until closing. Taste wise I give them an 8.5/10, Price for quality of sushi 10/10. They have a wide selection of rolls and there is something for everyone on the menu. For my friends that are not the biggest sushi eaters, they have simple rolls and for the other half of us who would move to Japan in a heartbeat if we could, they have more dynamic and fancier rolls. Customer service I would rate at a 9/10. The Hostesses, Waiters/Waitresses, and Chefs have always been fantastic, attentive, and very friendly. Even when it has been busy they are good about telling you wait time and it's never taken us to long to be seated. The environment is trendy and neat. I don't know why this place is not at 4.5 to 5 stars. I'm a regular and one absolute requirement at a sushi joint is fresh fish. The fish is ALWAYS fresh here and the portions are ridiculous (in a good way). Reading through the reviews, I see that it's hit or miss. Customers are either giving 5 stars or 1 Star. I also see that those who were dissatisfied with the service, pile on negative comments about the food ... sometimes. I can see that to be true because poor service usually ruins my meal too. One person complained that the portions were too big. Totally fair, but I always appreciate when a restaurant prides itself with bigger portions. Don't get me wrong, the rolls looked decent and tasted okay; however, very quickly upset both my wife's and I stomach . We have been going to Sumo Sushi for years now. We usually go for lunch & we sit at the bar. The sushi rolls are big and they are all good! We have tried so many of the rolls. Some of our favorites are The Jessica Roll, OMG, Ultimate Salmon Roll & Sunset Roll. We have never had a problem with the service, but we are at the sushi bar. They can get busy, but isn't it more fun at a sushi bar when it's busy? The restaurant could use a little touch up, it looks a little dated. I went in today during lunch hour to pick up my order and they didnt have it ready which i was totally okay with! Then when i got home and opened my bag i saw that the girl at front had put two macaron icecreams there with a little note written on the lid saying "thank you for waiting" i thought it was super sweet! We came here to celebrate my sons 18th birthday. Food was good. But as my fellow yelper mentioned service is lacking. They have a big menu with lots to choose from and daily happy hour specials. Service was friendly but Very slow service and we had to ask for forks at least twice. I also had to request was wasabi and ginger. My sons dish came out last and all the other food came out at different times. Before ordering we asked about the yaki soba and the waitress described it as a soup with broth. When it arrived last to the table it was a noodle dish. Not at all what she had described. We had 3 combo plates ordered at our table and everyone was happy with their food. I had the pleasure roll. Each comes with salad, miso soup, and your choice of 4pcs assorted sushi, or California roll, or spicy tuna roll. Whichever you choose, you will get full. Even on my most HANGRY days, I will begin to tap out halfway through my sushi roll. Maybe next time, I'll pass on the soup. They also got bento boxes where you can choose a 2-combo or 3-combo. Came here for dinner with my family. The interior felt like it used to be a diner or something and they converted it into a sushi place? They played jazz-y music, which was a little too loud... We stuck with different kinds of sushi. Great prices (half off!). Not sure how fresh or great their fish is, but didn't find anything in particular to complain about...I don't really like cooked rolls, so dont have anything to say about that :P We also ordered the Spicy Tuna salad, which consisted of a bed of lettuce, with spicy tuny on top of small tostada looking chips in 2 layers. (look at picture!) It was pretty, and yum to eat the spicy tuna on top of the crunchy chip...i thought it was unique and fun. (even tho i dont particularly like spicy tuna) The service was...ok. In the area to actually go to another sushi bar, but they are now closed on Sunday and Monday, so.... I always hate just giving 1 star, but really it is well deserved. The place smelled of bleach when we came in and by the time we came to the bar, it had changed to a bit of an off fish smell. This should have been the clue to just walk away, but I was trying to give the place a chance, but from now on, I won't go down that road again. Another weird thing was the cooler at the bar where you can see the fish was just overstuffed, and it just seemed odd to me. The rolls though OK, were just not what I thought it should be for the price, as they seemed like something I'd see at a 1/2 price place, meaning cheap, and not so high grade product being used. I'm trying not to be snobby, because really I'm not, but I guess when you've eaten at plenty of sushi bars a certain standard develops, and you can see when it just does not make the mark.
