The inside melted in your mouth. So good. I dismissed this place because of how it looks on the outside, it doesn't look like a 5 star restaurant, but it is a hidden gem. We waited for our food for a long time, we talked to all the waitresses there and asked for assistance and we were ignored, when the miso soup arrived to our table it was already cold and the salad from the dinner special was soggy and some pieces of salad were bad. When we paid we were charged 80 my boyfriend gave them a 100 bill and the lady never came back with our change. We had to go ask her for the change and she asked us in a very rude way if we needed the money back as she already placed it in the tip jar. I don't recommend this restaurant what so ever. read more

During our experience, the restaurant was understaffed and poorly managed when it came to serving our food at the appropriate time, and in a timely matter. We had a party at five and one person received their food; then, the rest of the party received their food more than 30 minutes later with no apology, explanation, etc. We will not be returning. read more

We went for lunch today and it was pretty good. The restaurant is in need of a refreshing remodel. The floors were sticky and again there were flies flying around inside the restaurant. We love Sumo! We usually come for their great happy hour, but Friday we went and got the sushi roll combinations. We started with the crab salad which is HUGE and to die for. The Monkey Brain is a fried mushroom roll and our favorite, consistently incredible each time. The California roll and spicy tuna roll were nothing to write home about but good! And the Crunch Mania was good with multiple fish, though the 'crunch' is just sprinkled crumbs on top, not like other crunch rolls. There was only what seemed to be one server who was also hosting and checking people out, so she was running around and busy it seemed. They might need more staff Friday nights! The new owners got rid of staff who waited on us for years and were so upbeat. The new staff had trouble taking your order, making it correctly and are not friendly at all. Sumo Sushi in Camarillo has been my go to spot for years. I used to frequent this location for dinner & Happy Hour & it was a pretty decent happy hour spot. My son really loved the happy hour sushi before, so that's why we were frequent customers. Several years later, they still offer Happy Hour, but different menu items of course. Happy Hour food is decently priced & tasted good. I ordered miso soup (not happy hour), a salad, 2 rolls & a beer. Only Bec I was famished & this was my only meal for today. I couldn't finish my food since I order with my eyes, so for another meal it is. The waitresses were nice & checked on us occasionally. Most if not all of the fish is farmed, the crab is krab -(whitefish, paste,painted orange to look like real crab) the lobster is crayfish, the spicy tuna is not spicy, the Wasabi is watered down and barely strong enough to elicit a flavorful response. Ugh! Just so disappointing. Listen, the staff was nice and helpful, but the rolls were lacking in every sense of the word... I would appreciate a menu that was honest and forthright , not false with misrepresentation. I shan't be returning I'll have to find "real fresh fish " closer to the harbor I suspect. Let me start by saying we've been loyal customers for 12+ years. We've been eating in when we lived in Camarillo, the owner literally saw our children grow up. We moved to Ventura, we've been ordering take out. We moved to Newbury Park, we've been ordering take out. Now, this place is under new management for the last year and things have gotten so bad since. I'm not even mentioning that they keep hiring new people all the time who don't even know their menu, I'm patient enough to repeat my order 2-3 times before they get it (the menu is the same as it used to be under previous management), I don't get it how employees can't basically read it to know it or keep the same standards to cook what's been cooked for years before them. Our order today arrived with rice over salted, rice falling apart and basic rolls rolled as a snail as if they've had a first-time chef roll them. I can make rolls better than that. I'm definitely not driving back to return the rolls so I just gave them a call to complain and all I got was "oh we we were in a rush today, it's busy here, we will definitely let the chef know". Such a poor excuse, why didn't they charge us less for doing sloppy job... Almost $100 order and such attitude to loyal customers for over a decade.
