A Disappointing Experience at Masa Sushi -- Especially for Guests With Food Allergies We have visited Masa Sushi frequently because, when our orders are prepared correctly, the food is genuinely delicious. Unfortunately, the service has become consistently disappointing, and after our most recent experience, I feel compelled to share a serious concern--particularly for anyone dining with food allergies. I have a serious gluten and dairy allergy, and every time I visit, I make a point of clearly communicating my allergies when ordering. Unfortunately, the server consistently seems unable or unwilling to acknowledge these concerns. He often simply stares at me without responding, and there appears to be a significant language barrier that makes communicating important dietary restrictions extremely difficult. His body language can also come across as visibly frustrated or irritated when I ask questions about my food. During my most recent visit, I ordered a Chirashi bowl and specifically requested no Kani (imitation crab) because Kani can contain wheat and therefore poses a serious risk for someone with a gluten allergy. I made this request specifically because previous Chirashi bowls at this restaurant have arrived with Kani despite my request to have it removed. When I explained that I could not have the Kani, the server told me, "There is none in it." I was confused because my previous Chirashi bowls had contained it. Unfortunately, when my food arrived, the Kani was there again. I immediately called the server over, pointed directly to the Kani, and told him, "I can't eat this." He took the plate back to the sushi bar. Instead of preparing a new dish or addressing the potential cross-contact issue, the Kani was simply removed from the existing dish, and the same plate was returned to me. I asked, "You didn't replace it with anything?" The server did not answer and quickly walked away. This was particularly concerning because when someone has a serious food allergy, simply removing the offending ingredient from a completed dish is not necessarily an adequate solution. The Kani had already been in contact with the other food on the plate. At a minimum, I would have expected the restaurant to take the allergy seriously, communicate with me about how the dish was being remade, and provide a safe replacement rather than simply picking the ingredient off and returning the same food. The service in general is also extremely slow and consistently feels disconnected. This doesn't seem to depend on how busy the restaurant is; even when there are only a few tables, the service often feels flustered, inattentive, and at times rude. It's unfortunate because the food itself really is good. We've returned many times because we genuinely enjoy it when everything is prepared correctly. However, delicious food isn't enough to justify repeatedly dealing with this level of service--especially when a customer's serious food allergy is involved. For anyone with a significant food allergy, I would strongly recommend exercising caution and making sure the restaurant can clearly understand and safely accommodate your dietary restrictions before ordering. In my case, after this experience, I no longer feel comfortable dining at Masa Sushi despite genuinely enjoying the food. Great food, but the service and handling of serious allergy concerns need significant improvement. read more

This used to be our favorite place in Camarillo because it was started by a real Japanese family and thought they would keep the tradition I hadn't visited them in about 2 months and at my last visit in December I was shocked at the price of small sashimi plate from $42 to $60 !!!! I should've had cancel the order right then but to my complete disappointment I went home to discover a 1/2 cup worth of fish arranged in big fluff of grated daikon radish We got robbed !!!! $60 worth of barely 10 pieces of tiny bits (only 6 of them were bigger -the cheaper fish , Tuna and salmon , the rest of them were small leftovers from making sushi. Well they couldn't find the order, and then they realized that somebody stole the order from pick up. So then I had to wait another 30 minutes for them to make me another rainbow roll with no compensation, not even a free beverage or a small discount off the check. As a Camarillo frequenter and sushi lover, Masa Sushi has always been on my radar to try out. Today was the lucky day. Went with a group of 5 + a baby for some Tuesday night sushi. The restaurant was busy but we were still able to be immediately sat, albeit by the front door. Server came quickly and we were able to get our order in right away. They start you off with some complimentary deep fried tofu bites, not what I was expecting but they were good. Two people in our group had miso soup, which they both enjoyed. Beware though, they are very very generous with the tofu in the soup. Sushi came about 20 minutes later, we ordered about 10 different rolls but I'll only comment on the ones I ate. Tempura roll was great and the tempura crisps were plentiful and delicious. Their red dragon rolls and energy rolls also hit the spot. While I didn't personally didn't eat the Chicken teriyaki dinner combination, the dish looked tasty and the portion was generous. Only suggestion would be to turn up the AC, as it felt quite warm in there despite being by the open door at 8pm. Masa sushi gets my approval, I'll be back to try more! read more

Got the three dish option lunch special and the portion was so generous I could barely finish it. I chose Pork Cutlet, Sesame Chicken, 101 Roll. The cutlet was average but the sesame chicken was so tender and portions were great. 101 Roll was amazing and came with crispy flakes and I definitely recommend if you can handle a bit of spice from the jalapeño in the roll. 2 piece gyoza and salad also came with the special. Very spontaneously we decided to try this place after shopping at Camarillo Outlet. Wasn't impressed with ambiance but after ordering few items, we kinda grew into liking the place. Service was very good the rolls are huge and the nigiri was the best. Good size cut very fresh. The tempura was fantastic. Prices for the amount of food is a bargain. Thankfully I got to experience Masa through a better set of eyes and had a wonderful dining experience. Anyways, we were seated right away in the back of the restaurant and it was cozy, clean, and comfortable. Our waitress was lovely and super friendly. Actually all of the staff here were great. Super friendly and very on top of it when it came to service. Our empty plates were always taken off the table right away and I felt impressed with how good the service was when almost every seat was taken. Lots of smiles and you could tell they appreciate the business. Super extensive menu here with so many wonderful options to pick from. You can 100% find something that suits your taste. Fresh sushi, awesome lunch combinations, rolls, soups, and more. Even your pickiest of eaters will find something. The sushi here is super fresh and really really tasty! My friend and I loved the traditional method of how they serve the raw fish with a hint of wasabi. And oh does their wasabi "slap" in a good way! Haha. That stuff is extra hot here but oh so good. My friend and I loved the kick of spice it added to each bite. Our rolls were super generous and they don't skimp on the servings here. Definitely a good value when looking at price to fish ratio. Every bite of sushi and the rolls were fantastic, really fresh seafood and good flavors. My friend and I will happily be back! So glad to see that sometimes when you try a place years later it can really surprise you. I know better now having eaten all around the world & appreciate good service paired with delicious food. In hindsight this place was probably always a 5 star worthy spot but reading my old review it was more the dining experience because of loud kiddos and being a broke teenager that probably had my review on the lower side. I do not know how they are at 4 stars. I mean for the kind of customer service you get, food, place, disgusting bathroom. I would give them negative stars. The server that was a tall guy is the rudest and most unprofessional I have ever seen. Terrible doesnt even describe the experience. There was another customer who asked for something and this guy huffs and puffs! Ordered food for pick up for the first time and this place is alright in my books! They were pretty busy when I went (which is a great thing!) and I was attended to right away. We ordered quite an assortment of food and were happy with what we got! The beef udon noodle was tasty, the noodle still being perfectly chewy and the broth was well seasoned. The sushi we ordered was reasonably priced, the rolls were hearty, and the fish tasted great! The shumai isn't what I'm used to like at a dim sum restaurant, but we'll take what we can get in Camarillo. Seems like a fun place to dine in and we'll have to try that next time.
