Two words: happy. hour. For some reason there's a lack of diverse food in Camarillo, but you look for sushi and there's a place in almost every plaza. Sumo is definitely mid tier, but I would say that's the baseline for most places in Cam. It's not the worst but it's not the best sushi I've ever had in my life either. One of the main reasons my family and I always come back is for the happy hour. The happy hour menu is diverse enough that we don't get bored of it and we always order a crap ton of rolls. Went here for the first time today as I'm looking for a great sushi restaurant near me. The service was good, but the I ordered was a bit disappointing. The place was busy so I figured it must be good, but as soon as I looked at the rolls in the menu, I noticed most had imitation crabmeat filling or a spicy fish inside. I asked for an "eel roll no crab meat, and requested they substitute the crab meat with shrimp tempura". The very nice waitress went to ask the kitchen if that was possible, and it was for an additional $2. I agreed. When the roll came out, it had crab meat in it. I thought, no big deal, I'll just pick it out. I ate everything in that roll with the exception of the crabmeat. I also ordered a seaweed salad, and I was happy to see that it had some cucumber in it. Unfortunately, that also disappointed. It felt a bit slimy and was lacking flavor. The cucumber was not freshly sliced, as it tasted and looked liked it had been in the vinegar cooking for a while, no crunch. When I was done, I sat there and could not stand the smell of the crabmeat on my place, it smelled very fishy. Unfortunately, this is not going to be restaurant I will come to again. I asked them twice over the phone to not put the fish with the rice because the fish would get hot. They confirmed it would be separate it was not. I also asked them what was in it. They said Tuna, yellow tail, albacore, salmon and eel. I hate imitation crab, seaweed/cucumber salad, ginger and wasabi! They didn't say that was in it over the phone and I hate all those things. So now I have sweaty fish mixed with gross sweetness from the salads and disgusting ginger all over the rice. As I entered two male employees were standing at the front only for one to pull out his cell phone and say "Wtf really coming 30 minutes before closing?!?" Just outright disrespectful and gross just like the food they call "sushi". S/o to the girl who took our order who took the time to make us feel welcomed and took time to explain items on the menu. What happen to the old Sumo Sushi? This use to be my favorite spot to bring a date or hang out with friends. The sushi quality is the same, but the prices are ridiculous for what it is. One of the reasons why people would come eat at this place was the half price sushi. I know Covid screwed it up, but you can't be selling this semi ok quality of sushi at the same price of other great sushi spots. Bring back half price sushi and people will come back in big numbers, you will sell more alcohol and get your money back. read more

I always visit this place for our once-a-month sushi lunch with a coworker. We both love the Vegas Roll. The spicy tuna and the crunchy stuff on top work so well together. Another favorite of our is the Alaskan Roll: the baked salmon is always cooked perfectly and the sauce is just sooo yummy!! We also like their lunch combo: salmon teriyaki, spicy chicken, tempura are good. We don't really like the sesame chicken. We tried the salmon skin salad as appetizer one time. But it was just ok.
