Grabbed dinner with some friends. We just missed the happy hour prices (about 30% off) that ended at 6pm. This place had a pretty good crowd inside...taking advantage of the HH prices I guess. Regular menu prices seemed a little higher than average in my opinion. Anyway, we ordered up a few different cut rolls. They were all good. What struck me as odd though...everyone were eating at tables and no one was seated at the sushi bar. This place has a private parking lot but there's enough parking spaces...at least that what it seemed like to us. Yep, Japanese beer is also available. Ok. So I asked for wasabi and soy. Not a huge request. Upon arrival, I asked again. Yes she said. Then when I got home with my takeout, ( to my 38 week pregnant wife) , no wasabi. It's now 10:03. I call, say I just had a takeout order, they close at 10, after she told me 5 times they are closed I finally got thru to her. She said oh hi!! Then I said, I requested wasabi at the order, and again at pickup I re iterated . Wasabi? She said yes and ginger. Same woman. She said that they would give me more next time over the phone . Then she said wasabi isn't food so no credit. ??? She could care less. I would have been happy with come back and get some. No such reply. Didn't give a fuck. No help. I have been a patron of this restaurant for years, but, after today's experience they have lost my business. I dined here today with my cousin, mother, and infant son for lunch. Our waitress was polite but did forewarn us that she is new so if we had any questions regarding items on the menu she would have to advise senior waitstaff. We appreciated her candor and asked about a specific roll (green volcano) that was new to everyone at the table. She followed up with what the roll contained and my mother decided to order it, which she stated verbally and on the order sheet. As our lunch progressed my cousin and I received our meals but the green volcano roll was MIA. The waitress came back and asked how everything was tasting and we mentioned that all the food was good but that my mother did not receive her order. The waitress immediately apologized and stated that she didn't realize we had intended to order the roll, only that we were asking questions on its contents. My mom told her that she put it on the order sheet and told her verbally, which the server followed up with an appropriate apology and went to immediately put it in. The manager followed up with us a few minutes later with "do you still want the roll or no?", at this point my cousin and I were finished with our food and my mom responded "yes, I'd like to eat at some point" noticeably perturbed with the hold up. Another 10 minutes passes and her order finally arrives and she begins to eat AN HOUR AFTER we sat down. Our waitress comes by again and asked if we would like our check split 3 ways, I responded saying that wasn't necessary but that I would like the green volcano removed from our bill as they significantly delayed our lunch along with having my mom sit there and watch us eat our entire meals before anyone even followed up with us. The server was very professional and said that she completely understood our frustration but that she does not have the authority to okay that and that she would have her manager come over and talk to us. We thanked her and waited for the manager, that's where it became abundantly clear that this establishment does not respect their patrons. The manager came to our table defensively asking us why we wanted the roll to be removed, i explained to her the chain of events and she had the nerve to tell me that the roll is a difficult one to make and there must have been a misunderstanding, it just takes a long time to prepare. I then repeated that we ordered the roll along with all of our other items and that once we confronted the waitress about why it wasn't included with the rest of the meal(s) she responded that she did not out it in, effectively taking responsibility for the mistake. The manager said "okay, give me a minute" and walked away from our table to discuss with our server. She returned a few minutes later stating that "because it shows that we did in fact order it on the order sheet" that she will take off 20% of the cost of the roll and asked if that was okay. I responded with no it absolutely not okay, but to please bring our check because by this time we had been there for almost an hour and a half and had to return to work. She left to retrieve our checks and came back to point out that she took a whole $3 off the bill. Seeing as that she had rudely questioned us about the entire ordeal, got defensive when we explained the situation to her and then only took off a portion of the roll price was just flabbergasting to me and my fellow lunch mates. I have never experienced someone in a management position arguing with their customers, trying to prove them wrong, and then once presented with their mistake only offering to comp a small percentage of one item. Do yourself a favor and take your money elsewhere, the management obviously does not value their clientele. I want to add that our waitress was extremely friendly, and although it was her mistake initially, she owned up to it and tried to do everything in her power to rectify the situation. This place used to be great, but I haven't been in years. Last night we were in a hurry to eat so we just order two rolls. After 20 min we asked a waitress to check on our rolls. She said they were almost out, ok. 10 more min go by. We asked again. "They're almost done". No believing we asked the seating hostess. "Sorry, they haven't been even started them," was the reply. Huh? After two more times asking and letting them know we were in a hurry, out first roll came out. It was huge. Great! The server made no eye contact and drop it in front of my wife and ran off. It was my roll, not hers. Bad. The scallops in my roll had a fishy smell and taste, but I ate it anyway. Big mistake. Stomach pains all night and diarrhea first thing. In Camarillo for weekend work trip. I Yelped this amazingly, delicious place. Excellent dinner special, gave me far too much food. This means I'll have a delicious lunch tomorrow!! It's my birthday in a few days, so the sweet waitress brought me this incredible birthday treat, before she left for the night! It was green tea ice cream scooped into what looked and tasted like chocolate cookie waffle tortillas, with whip cream and chocolate drizzle. I sat at the sushi bar and watched an incredible looking "Jesika Roll", being made!! Wow! I'll have to make it back someday to try that one! Thank you Sumo Sushi Owner, Chefs and Wait staff! Sushi is good, not amazing but i cant complain but... it's becoming so dirty. I cant find one booth with fabric seats that does not have a stain on it. I can see the owner does not even want to spend the money to have it cleaned sadly. Even the table tops are all sticky and greasy. While nearby at the outlets, got hungry and decided to give this place a try. Went during Happy Hour and ordered 2 rolls, a Camarillo Roll and a Dr Jalepeno. or something like that. Both were really good! Sushi on par or even better than many other places I have tried. However, the Happy hour menu was severely limited, with only a few items to order...so can't give this place 5 stars...but a solid 4. Had the worst experience here last Wednesday. We were regulars here, but after last week, we will not be returning. Our server was extremely unprofessional and not attentive. Placed our order, 2 people's food did not arrive until an hour after everyone else despite asking 6 separate times for the food. Server also spilled beer on my sushi, and brought napkins to soak up my beer drenched fish. We were so fed up with the experience we said we wanted the remaining items for the two people who had not received their food to be packed to go- took 15 more minutes. When it came time for the bill, there was no consideration for the time or inconvenience. I gave the server back the bill and stated we should not be paying for the two items which took so long. She took it to her manager who stated, well if you don't want it, I wont charge you. Then after I asked for it to be removed again while keeping the food, she stated can I give you a discount because I cannot waive the $17.00 or I will get in trouble. Astonishing. Will never return. Used to frequent at least once a week and took employees from our business there weekly, will never return. read more

First here!! I have to say...all the rolls we had were delicious! Especially the Popcorn one. WoW!!!! Unfortunately, the cucumber salad was a fail. Was too sweet & nobody wanted to eat it. The other bummer was that we had to have our glasses replaced because the ones they gave us were dirty & even had the full lipstick print on! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful dinner here on Friday night. The restaurant itself was busy but the service seem to improve compared to some of the past reviews I'd have to say that they really have paid attention to the feedback to correct it. It was only a few minutes wait while the server cleared the table and we were seated by a very nice welcoming hostess. The booths were a little beat up and the decor seems a little out of out-of-date. With that being said let's get to the food. It was fantastic! We ordered the monkey brain which is crab meat cream cheese and mushrooms in a fried ball and comes with 2 servings about the size of a softball. This monkey brain was so delicious I honestly could have just eaten that all night long. However we decided to each order our own roles and share them. My boyfriend order the prince lobster roll and I ordered the crab roll. Although they did not resemble the pics on the menu these rules were huge and filled with deliciousness we had them hold the Cucumber because I'm not a fan. We definitely would have been okay with the monkey brain and one roll as we left with about I have a roll to take home. For drinks I had the Fusion margarita and my boyfriend had a beer. I probably wouldn't do the margarita again as it tasted like straight sour mix but with food that good that is only a minor detail that can be overlooked. First and last time visiting! Husband and I decided to check this place out because it was close to home. BIG disappointment. We got waters right away, but our food took 45 minutes! Which was a "what the heck" moment because everyone else had their food already. The rolls are HUGE with tons of rice and crab meat, so very hard to eat. A different server each time came to our table and no one knew which roll was which because they didn't tell us which they had set down. Next time I will make the drive somewhere farther. read more

The half price was a sign that it would be decent at best. So expectations were low ya know? We ordered some safety rolls, things I would never order at a real sushi restaurant, like dragon rolls and rainbow rolls. Things that even charlatan sushi chefs can't eff up. Never in my sushi career (yes, it's job of sorts) have I returned anything. I mean, even if it's bad, I feel too sorry for the chef. Sis and struggled through some rolls and mutant fish nigiri. Then we bit into the stalest, dankest, darkest, foulest Mordor style roll smothered in my sushi pet peeve...CREAM CHEESE! In Cinque Terra, a waiter told someone who asked for parmesan cheese with her trout "Fish and cheese is like war!" Well, I never understood that statement fully until biting into this roll. It was a war between the rotten fish and the cream cheese, and I was the loser. We called the waitress and said something is wrong with this roll AND we did not order anything with cream cheese. She huffed and puffed some, I gagged a bit and continued my civil argument that we did not want cream cheese, bit what I wanted to say was that I didn't want fish from last month. I used to WORK here a few years ago, and if I had to rate it then when I used to be an employee, I woulda given it a 2/5. It was that bad. We were understaffed almost every weekend so the service was horrible sometimes.(People kept coming back even though I was the worst waiter in Camarillo). Plus, it used to be kinda dirty in there(atmospherically) and the food was so-so. I decided to give my old stomping ground a little visit a few days ago, and MAN. They've really upgraded everything in there and have plenty of workers now it seems. I was glad to see that the old owner, "Mr. Ahn" is still there, and the kitchen staff from when I used to work there are still crackin' jokes in the kitchen. It was great to see this place really cleaned up and serving good food at great prices. Ordered 3 rolls very quickly. Waited 55 minutes and had to leave without eating. The server walked by a dozen times, looked down at our empty table but never stopped to say a thing. People all around us eating or finished their meals even though they arrived after we did. When we walked by the cash register on our way out, the server asked, "Oh they never brought your order?" Yup... Eek! Methinks not. This is our second time having dinner at Sumo, our first experience was over a year ago and it was great--this time not so much. We arrived around 7pm, we noticed there was only two other tables that had small parties so of course we assumed we would get our appetizer and drinks right away. After waiting for 10 min. for menus we finally placed our drink/appetizer orders, and then we had to wait 30+ min. for them to arrive. Mind you, that was only after we reminded another waitress that we caught walking by-we never received our house roll. The oyster shots were horrible, they were served in a wine glass! They are called "shots" for a reason. Nothing bothers me more than other parties (same size as ours) who arrive after you getting served their drinks and soup before you, the ones who have been waiting patiently! One hour after we arrived (yes I started watching the time) we received our food. We asked for a fork for my daughter's rice twice, when she started eating with her fingers my nephew went up to the front desk to ask again. When my nephew and his wife went outside to change their baby, this lady (maybe an owner?) came up to our table to ask if we were okay because they looked upset... I told her the truth, that we were all upset with the poor service that we had received. She apologized and explained our waitress was new and in training. Call your friends, lounge in a booth, order some nigiri or rolls, and let the fish melt in your mouth. This place gets 4 stars for best value for the price. If you're picky, you will notice that different fish tastes fresher on different visits. The pieces of fish are sometimes generous, and sometimes skimpy. The service can be slow or forgetful of special requests. But there are lots of places you can drop $100/person. There's only one Sumo! read more

First off, I am a sushi fan, so points there. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The host stand in the huge lobby in front reminds me of a hotel front desk, but guests are promptly greeted and seated. Service in the seating area is a bit slow for both lunch and dinner, even when it's not busy. While the servers are not the friendliest, they are competent. The food is definitely the highlight here. The beer is always cold, the sake always flowing, and the sushi is fresh and tasty (not the best I have ever tasted, but certainly above average.) That said, though, their entrees are better than their sushi. Good in a pinch, I'll likely be back. read more

Had a very frustrating evening here. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated initially as it was a busy evening understandably. All seemed to go ok with our drinks and appetizer orders but after waiting another 30+ minutes we started to see multiple tables that had been seated after us get their food. We stopped 2 different servers to let them know that we had been waiting a while and had seen other parties get all of their food before us. The first server said our ticket was lost. That was all, no follow up, no promise to make sure our food was being prepped asap, nothing. Another 15 minutes went by until we finally stopped the second server who said they'd check on our order.. She didn't even go to the sushi table to inquire about the order. The last straw was that finally, our original server came to us to apologize, and she served us what she thought was our order which WASN'T EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT WE ORDERED. Unfortunately at that point it was the last straw. This rating would have been much better had we at the very least had a manager acknowledge there was a problem and they were planning to fix it asap, but no one acknowledged us at all. I am leaving a one star review just because our service at least started out ok. Everything else was just a train wreck. Came in around 7pm because I heard that they have outside dining. The young woman yelled across the restaurant, "we are closed" when clearly their hours state otherwise. So I questioned her and she aggressively said that only outside dining is closed and said there is no light outside so we have to close. I don't get how they run their business. All of them were prepared quickly and tasted great. The Snow roll was out of this world. I cant remember what was in it due to the fact that I in another world while eating it.
