This is probably one of the bigger Japanese restaurants if not the biggest in Camarillo (I still wonder how there are so many Japanese places in Camarillo when there are not that many asians haha). The food is good. The have a good size menu. The people who work here are nice. This place gets busy, but not uncomfortable busy, because they have a lot of room. I drive from LA to VC every Monday to teach my very loyal belly dance students and to rehearse with my company at the community center on Burnley. I have 4 classes in a row, and usually forget to eat before I embark on the journey. The reason I am a fan is because I can stop in here and get a few quick hand rolls to go in about 10 minutes, and at that hour - usually around 3:00 pm the sushi menu is half price. If I get 3 rolls, that is too much food, and costs about $15. It just beats the hell out of driving through burger king and getting a chemical headache after gaging down that crap. I have not tried too many things. I tend to keep it simple if I eat right before work. CA roll is standard. The spicy tuna roll is very spicy, and although I never get to have it, I love the sashimi salad -its very spicy too, but they will mellow it out if you ask. Last time, I ate in and it was just 2 young Japanese guys -the chef and waiter/host, and me, and they were listening to country love songs on XM -kind of funny. If you need a quick bite to go, I definitely recommend the Camarillo Sumo! I would really like to see them stay in business. read more

i love their snow rolls! but i always have to ask to have it cooked well because one time i ordered it and the fish was still kind of raw (no bueno in my book). the food comes quick and while you wait they give you a mini appetizer plate. the servers are really nice and they're always very polite. read more

The food is expensive and service is terrible. Owner spilled miso soup all over our table when she served our plates. I currently smell like miso soup as the soup found its way to my lap. Been here quite a few times over the years, last time we tried to go it was about an hour before closing and they told us they ran out of rice so we just left. It must have been several months to a year ago so I decided to stop by for lunch one recent afternoon for old times sake. The vibe is different than I remember, kind of feels like "just eat and leave" and it wasn't due to outward rudeness from any of the staff or anything along those lines. Not sure why it felt that way, but my lunch companion and I were having a playful conversation at an appropriate sound level and felt like we were in a library and being too loud. Just weird. The food was still pretty good, almost as good as I remember, I still love the snow roll and the prince lobster roll. I don't recall the names of the other two rolls we had but the wait wasn't too bad and it was well presented, tasty and fresh. Water was refilled promptly which mattered because we were fresh off a hike and thirsty. Portions were good, price was reasonable and we left stuffed. I love to support local businesses so we always resort to a place like this whenever we crave for sushi. But tonight was different. One of our orders was the dinner roll $16.99 which includes a choice of roll and 4 sushi. My husband was about to eat the last sushi but he noticed a hair in between the salmon and the rice, so we called a server and they had it replaced. Then, the Dynamite roll was served. I was about to get the second piece when we noticed a HAIR AGAIN in it. So we called their attention AGAIN. I felt bad to complain esp for the second time for the same issue, but I had to. It grosses me out to see even a single strand of hair in my food. So they replaced it. Few minutes after, I think the owner/manager (w/short hair) came and apologized (w/smiling face), and said " It's weird. This has never happened. Twice on the same table?" I cant believe I was hearing those. Her approach got really me disappointed. I would've understand that situations like that can happen but I never thought she'd think of that in us. I told her there's no way our hair would have fallen into the food. So disappointed that I'll never going back to that place, and will never recommend it to friends. read more

The most affordable way to eat sushi! With thier 50% off rolls and various sushi menu, you can try a bunch of new stuff without having to dish out a lot of money for something you might not like. My favorite roll there is the Black Dragon roll. Their specialty rolls are a bit on the smaller side in my opinion, but their 50% off menu keeps me from complaining much about anything. The decor inside is absolutely beautiful. I usually go there for take out in the later afternoon and it's always an unusually long wait. I've never waited less than 20 min even if I'm the only person there...and yes, I DO leave a tip even for take out, so I don't know why it always takes so much longer for this place to complete a to go order than others.... This location is "ok" but they get 4 stars because the owners know how to do it right...it's just that this particular location isn't the best of them. I personally prefer the Ventura location...and now they have the newbury park location which is beautiful on top of being delicious. I've been there once and ate a great lunch! Today I ordered take out based on my previous experience I expected the food to be just perfect. My baked sushi looked like somebody ate it already, crispy tuna was no crispy but only soaked with old fried oil. I'm very disappointed. They have lots of rolls. Good thing is they have all the picture for each rolls. The service is better than before but little bit slow even though it's Thursday night. I ordered 5 different special rolls, salmon sushi, shrimp tempura udon. Food was about normal. Nothing was special for today's order. Up until about 3 months ago, I never really went here much. That is, until they introduced the take out happy hour menu, which has completely changed my perception of the restaurant. They have a specific roll, called the Pink Lady, which is $6.99 during happy hour. A great price for delicious sushi. I've always had great service while picking up my food and the employees are always friendly. A few drawbacks: They seem to pick and choose when they have the take out happy hour. It used to be every day from 4-6 PM, but then they out of nowhere stopped the promotion on Fridays only. Just a little confusing and frustrating when I'm craving their food. They also added their own $5 tip to my order once, which was odd and might've been a mistake, but I still am wary whenever I pay for my food ever since. I used to eat here when it was under the previous ownership when I was younger. Actually had friends work here in high school a long time ago. But recently I've been there two times and both times I've had the same issues to varying degrees. Maybe 5 months ago, I ate with my dad here for dinner. Service was slow bc they were somewhat busy, but that wasn't the problem. I got bad food poisoning. Within 10 minutes of leaving, I went across the way to trader joes to pick up some groceries, and I immediately ducked into their bathroom. It was bad...I won't go into the details. I called Sumo right after to let them know what happened and they sorta apologized. But not really. About 1 month ago, I went again thinking that I would just give them another chance. Things happen. I actually did a pickup / to go order this time. Again after 10-15 min of eating the food, I didn't feel that great. Def not the same level of horror but still. When I called them to let them know, the girl didn't even really care, so I asked for a manager. The manager said nothing like this has happened before - but uh ...it happened to me a few months ago!! She also said that maybe I'm not used to eating that fish or whatever - but I eat sushi alllllll the time just not usually in Camarillo. Needless to say, not going back. I tried to give it another chance, but not worth it to me. Sorry :( I just hope this makes them more aware of the situation and maybe one day far in the future, I will try again. read more

The sushi here was fantastic. Really spot on and with a diverse selection. Only rated it 4/5 because the dinner meal (chicken & steak) tasted like something out of a frozen dinner. Went there last night. The place smelled like good food. Nice Sushi bar, kind of dark though. I don't know if I would have liked to sit at the booths in this place, didn't have the open atmosphere that the Ventura Sumo Sushi has. Sushi itself was excellent, especially for the price. You can get full on sushi here for much less than the usual sushi bar, and the fish tastes as good as places much more expensive. They don't have a huge selection of types of fish like some higher end places, but what they did have was fresh and tastey. 3 of us got full on sushi and each had a beer and total was only $47. Most places the bill would have been in the $80 range for the same thing. The atmosphere was comfortable, not trashy or desperate plasticky, but not fancy either. read more
