I live a few steps from Summer and it has always been my go-to place for quick dinners. My favorite is the chicken sandwich (I prefer Spicy), hands down, really delicious. The meat is not overly spiced and salted and the bread is always fresh. I have had their stewed beef soup, really good too and loved the broth. I've had their rice meals and it has always been consistent and satisfying. Once in a while, I treat myself to their bubble tea drinks which are served not too sweet, much to my liking. All in all, Summer is great food, reasonably priced and filling and I'll definitely try to explore their other goodies in the future. read more

I used to have to travel to flushing for this soup. When ordering takeout, I was relegated to the sad, whitewashed version from pop pot in Glendale. The soup here is so legit and exceeded my expectations when I ordered my extra spicy version with fatty beef, lamb and fish balls. Summer is a winner for the cheap eats, the clean interior, and the tasty food. Non-carnivores get slighted in the banh mi world all the time. But not by Summer. Out of the seven banh mi options, Summer offers a tofu, a vegetarian fish, and a vegetarian chicken. I opted for the vegetarian fish and it was one of the tastiest banh mi's I've ever had. First accolades go to the bread I bit into. Light, and crusty, with that crunch that says it's oh so fresh when you bite into it. Then my tongue met the thick layer of pickled shredded carrots, and julienned cucumber, perhaps cilantro. I was too busy munching to dissect. Summer's pickled vegetables are better tasting than most, with the perfect proportion of sugar and vinegar. The layer of mayo is tasty, especially when combined with the sriracha. I ordered the spicy, and it was spicy without being mouth numbing. One Yelper mentioned that they don't put in jalapenos. They actually do. Not sliced up, just diced, and not too many of it, as if the establishment lacked a fire extinguisher to help the tongues alit. Doesn't management know that's what bubble teas are for? The vegetarian fish I got was tasty and the amount was ample enough. The combination of fillings, sauces and bread made for a remarkably delicious sandwich. And it was a huge sandwich for $5, possibly 10 inches long? Not sure where James C. usually gets his banh mi's but this one was indeed big. I ate one portion there and took the remaining half to eat at the Queen Center Mall. Summer sells bubble teas, and a mala soup, with toppings of your choice. The banh mi was so scrumptious, I actually wanted to go back and get another, but I determined that the giant loaf of bread in the banh mi was enough bread carbs for the day. I would fly back if I could, for the banh mi again and to try the mala. I've already told friends and family about the place. Summer sells also in a refrigerated cabinet other foodstuffs like marinated meats, sliced pig ears, chicken wings etc. The interior seems surprising spacious, because only a few tables are on the left side as you enter. Someone mysteriously sent me a note "...You can order in summer..." when I didn't like the Banh Mi and Pho situation in Elmhurst. I had no clue what it meant at first. My detective-ish BF figured it out. The person who sent me a note was referring to Summer, the restaurant serving Banh Mi and Chinese Soup Noodles on Grand Ave in Elmhurst...Ah hah. I do not claim to know if they are Vietnamese or not but I do suspect they are from China but I am not sure. Does it matter? I guess not to me. I was all set to try the mysterious suggestion. Went there yesterday and I was happy with my classic Vietnamese sandwich. Even though the actual size of the sandwich was pretty long, the sandwich wasn't toooo packed with ingredients at Summer. My actual favorite sandwich in Manhattan is a little bit smaller but it is uber PACKED with pork meat and the rest of the usual Banh Mi accoutrements like pate, cucumbers, cilantro, and Vietnamese pickled carrot/daikon Radish salad (Do Chua) but this is in Manhattan and I wasn't in Manhattan, I was at the moment in Elmhurst. The counter lady took care toasting my baguette so that I had my sandwich nicely toasted and warm. It was crispy and not too bready, how I like it. I did feel the filling was a little loose for me but I enjoyed it. I didn't really taste the little bit of pate. I had to question if it was even in the sandwich. In Manhattan I usually order the #1 with pate and I really know the pate is there. The question is would I go back to Summer for Banh Mi. For $5 and the convenience, I would definitely go back to Summer for Banh Mi. It's also worth mentioning the staff at Summer is really nice and patient to explain anything on the menu. Now onto the soup noodles, I enjoyed it but I didn't find the soup that flavorful. It was a little bit bland for me but I enjoyed the cellophane noodles nonetheless. The bobas in my bubble tea were a bit too soft and the mango drink was very bland in flavor. I could not tell it was mango flavored tea. With everything said I have to try Summer's other sandwiches. And I have to go back to the other Banh Mi place in Elmhurst to give them another try after the bad experience I had the last time. This way I can figure out who I like more. read more

The banh mi sandwiches are only $5 and they are very good. The bread is light, airy and crispy. Don't be fooled by the length of the sandwich. A similar size Italian bread sits much heavier in your stomach. I was able to finish the sandwich no problem and I'm not a big eater. I found out about this place from my boyfriend. It's such a convenient walk from his place and we always order take out. The reason we order take out is because Summer has a lot of potential to look more appealing to customers but it still looks like it just opened and not much is there. This is a new restaurant that just open up not long ago. It is a small and tidy restaurant with very few tables. The food not as bad as what I expected especially with the price I pay. I brought the original or the classic Vietnamese sandwich unfortunately the only problem I have is the meat. It is a bit too salty and overpowered other stuff that is inside the sandwich. Other than that I think I overall was pretty good. Maybe next time I will try their spicy soup noodle since it is the only two food they sell. The restaurant basically has no customer service because the lady just makes the food and then give it to you. If you stay and eat there, it is more like a self serve place. I've been here several times and each time they don't disappoint! Their Vietnamese sandwiches are great (I've tried the pork, the chicken, and the original) and they always come out with warm toasted bread with a great crisp and soft chew. They have the right amount of spice especially since I always get them spicy. Their spring rolls are also tasty and a great way to start the meal. And the price was right. Sometimes our order is messed up, but other times they offer us complementary dishes, so I guess we're even.
