I tried this cute small biz vegan ice cream shop in sharpsburg pa tonight that I heard of from a friend. I am not vegan. I am lactose intolerant, not a big eater or sweet eater so vegan matches my taste buds and needs a little better than real ice cream. I had a small strawberry shortcake sundae which was the right size (very nice workers said the large size is for sharing). I forgot to say no whipped cream, I'm so used to not eating whipped cream I forgot to try the vegan version nooo but I ate all of the sundae which is not like me! It was just right, not too heavy or sweet like I prefer. Very jam packed with flavor in small pieces. The prices match the costs of the product for vegan ingredients and a place like this is hard to find in the area. They seem to do great! Have sundaes, shakes, take home pints, cones, cups and other. It is small being as not enough standing room for more than 5-6 customers so grab and go style. Check out their neat menu (& the pup's jealousy)! Recommend and love it! Worth the drive. Finally was in the area on a Sunday when they were open and was able to try this ice cream! First of all, they had really adorable kitschy vintage decor for Halloween. My daughter loved it! I did too. We tried peanut butter chocolate ripple and pumpkin caramel cream. I liked them both! The PB ripple was very peanut buttery, which is my favorite ice cream flavor. The chocolate ripple was pretty liquid, not like a thick fudge ripple. It added a sugary flavor which balanced the creamy chocolate, but it wasn't very well distributed through the ice cream, so you'd get a mostly chocolate syrup bite, and then the rest of the dish was only PB. I slightly preferred the pumpkin caramel, which was a mix of a creamy vanilla caramel ice cream, with almost a marshmallow texture and flavor, as well as a very strong pumpkin spice ice cream. The pumpkin was maybe a little much, it was almost bitter, but it was so nicely distributed and balanced by the sweet creamy flavor I didn't mind much. Even though the flavor combos weren't completely spot on, I thought the texture and flavor of the ice cream base itself was pretty much unbelievable for a vegan product. It was thick and creamy. Suger Spell Scoop is a vegan ice creamery in South Hills who's flavors change often. In addition to scoops they offer floats, a sundae, & pints. I opted for the Haunted Pumpkin (pumpkin chocolate swirl with marshmallows & chocolate chips). My wife opted for Peanut Butter Fudge Brownie. Both flavors were amazing. I'm not vegan, but my take is that if I can find a great (or even decent) vegan option for something, it would be silly not to go that route. It's no coincidence that "spell" is in this business' name as their ice cream is nothing short of magic. My boyfriend and I are living in Pittsburgh for a few months and I stumbled upon Sugar Spell Scoops while seeking out non-dairy ice cream. I stopped in the first or second weekend I was here and have been fully hooked since. I now stalk their Instagram, often pre-order pints, and when I swing by to pick up my pints I usually get a mini sundae or kids cup of ice cream (with magic shell!). It's a fun routine to look forward to. Our evening routine is now this. Open a pint. Say things like, "How is this vegan? Is it magic?". "This is the best vegan ice cream I've ever had. No, it's the best ice cream of any kind I've ever had." "This might be the best flavor so far!". "What are we going to do when we move back home? How hard would it be to pack a cooler of dry ice and ice cream for a 10 hour drive?" Why can't our place at home that makes vegan ice cream even come close to this?". Seriously, everything I've tried has made my taste buds and heart happy. And with new flavors weekly, there's always something new and unique to try, often a a collab with other local businesses. I'd tell you my favorite, but I literally think every new flavor I try is my favorite. Even vanilla, which I usually find boring and basic, has surprised me. Part of me is sad that they're only open on Sundays (and the occasional Saturday) but the other part of me knows that the limitation keeps me eager and excited, which is smart on the business' end. Love this store that my daughter and I stumbled upon a few weeks ago after basketball practice. They only serve vegan foods so the ice cream is made with cashew milk and not cow's milk. This is their second weekend since Sugar Spell scoops opened and I was anxious to try it out. The place is run by two people of whom I got to chat and interview with Amanda who prepares the vegan ice cream from scratch. They currently have only 4 flavors but you are permitted to sample them all before purchase. The "blue moon" is an interesting flavor that is popular in states like Iowa. It has a lemony taste to it. It is something that tastes better the more you try it. Amanda explained to me that most of her ice cream is cashew based with the addition of hemp to give it that creamy texture. Where peanut butter is involved, then she uses that. Toppings are $.75 each extra if you are ordering a cup or a cone but are no additional charge if you are ordering a sundae. I ordered a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream and topped it with chocolate jimmies. One scoop is $4.00 but remember you are paying for plant based ingredients. They have a small sit down area which reminds me of the old style malt shop but you can take it to go. This ice cream was so good that I thought I was getting the real deal. Amanda told me that is her goal. You can definitely tell this was homemade from scratch and worth every penny! Take out is also available. They sell pint size containers for around $10.00. The famous "spaghetti" blend was sold out but they hope to have more as they establish themselves more. As far as drinks go you can buy bottled water or upon request they will serve you tap water in a plastic cup. Pittsburgh does not have many vegan stand alone places so this ice cream shop makes a welcome addition to our city. Their weekend hours are Fri and Sat 1-9 and Sun 1-7. FINALLY Sugar Spell has a physical location! This place is amazing and caters to vegans and gluten free friends alike. The atmosphere is super chill, with an old fashioned malt shop vibe with current new age feels. The shop is quaint with two booths and two high top seats, along with some board games in the back to keep people entertained. The ice cream itself is out of this world. For their grand opening weekend, they had four flavors to choose from: chocolate, rainbow vanilla, coffee, and mint chocolate chip. They offer several regular sundae flavors too, that you choose your ice cream for: PB&J, chic-o-finger, PB cup, S'more, and the classic. There is also the option to DIY a sundae and add any of their awesome toppings to it. There are also cones, including a GF cone option. You can always stop in for a pint, quart, half gallon, or wand to go! Various flavors are available. The staff are so accommodating to allergies and make every effort to display that the ice cream is made with nuts and alert people to what toppings may not be GF. When I asked whether they had any unopened containers from which they could serve me (I have Celiac and have to be very cautious about cross-contamination), the reply was that it was Sunday evening (they are open Thurs - Sun) and besides that National Ice Cream Day. This was said in an accusatory tone. Frankly I wasn't thinking about it being National Ice Cream Day, but since that's their business maybe they should have prepared better for it. I can think of two possible responses that may have made me want to return another time. First: "I'm sorry. We don't have any unopened containers left, but we hope you give us another try." (Maybe even offer a coupon.) Second: offer to open one of the pint containers of which they had plentiful stock and we're unlikely to sell out before closing. read more

Okay this place is dangerous, I'm so happy I live in the South Hills because I would be here every single day. I would hide in the ice cream cooler during the week and just live my best life eating all the ice cream. I finally was in the area and made sure to stop by for a nice cold treat! The atmosphere is cool and eccentric, perfect for an ice cream spot. Even the restroom was decorated in theme and they even have unicorn hand soap! I was greeted by such a nice employee who was ready to help with any questions and also offered a free taste before I picked. I ended up going with the cinnamon peanut butter fluffernutter ** OMG it was like cold, ooey, gooey, oh so creamy peanut butter fudge! It was honestly the best ice cream I ever had - vegan or not! I of course had to get a pint to go - I opted for the butter pecan since that is my all time favorite (even prior to becoming vegan). It is again so amazing and creamy and doesn't flake or chip like other vegan ice creams I have had. My father in law even tried it (definitely not a vegan) and he said it was very delicious! The best ice cream I have ever had, vegan or not. Specifically, we went to the 2019 holiday party, and I had the Krampus Sundae with reindeer tracks ice cream. The fixings included chocolate coconut, pretzels (horns), and chocolate sauce, and the cocoa bomb effect was delicious. Some salty from the pretzels accented the sweet, and took the edge off of the intense cocoa. A rich ice cream experience I have never had at any place before today. Not only have I eaten my share of ice cream in my life, but I've eaten a Titanic-sinking iceberg of vegan ice cream since going vegan in 2011. read more

It is hard to write anything bad about Sugar Spell Scoops because of the quality of the product, the wonderful service with a smile and the quirky creativeness of the brand, so I will just mention what could be improved in my critiques. The ice cream is very high quality because they make it local and it is very much like homemade because they don't skimp on ingredients. It is natural and no chemicals, or processed stuff, so you are getting the real deal. That's what I love about their ice cream. I had 2 scoops of the PB Fluffer Nutter flavor and was very full afterwards. This was my first time there, but I think I had my favorite ice cream on the first try(but, maybe another of their flavors will top it later). It was hard to get enough of it, but 2 scoops was just about it. They make the scoops rather large, so you won't feel jipped. It is pricey, but it seems worth it to get this one of a kind experience. The PB Fluffer Nutter squashes and malls any other peanut butter ice cream on the market(vegan, or dairy). The grocery store stuff is just completely weak and forgettable in comparison. I finally had a peanut butter ice cream how I would have made it, if I knew how to make ice cream. Wait, you said Ben and Who? The only rub is that they only had 3 flavors of ice cream available while I was there. It was lucky that they had the PB Fluffer Nutter there and it was my amazing dream of what an ice cream could be. What if I did not like any of those flavors? The other ones were vanilla and double chocolate. So, not sure those would have done it for me. I think the variety is a bit lacking in that department, so that could be something to improve. The good thing is that they change up the flavors, so if you come back next week it will be different? I think that's how they do it. The only other thing is the size of the store front. If it was anymore packed than it was things could have been dicey. It can handle a small crowd, but anymore people in there than I am sure it could get cramped, or you might not be able to find a seat. I am happy that Pittsburgh is warming up more and more to the vegan thing. Hopefully, that will catch on more and we can have a bigger, more diverse palate. read more

So happy to have this place so close to home! We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. The place is very nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. I love that they have a good amount of seating for people who want to stay and have their ice cream. We sampled the four flavors on rotation: chocolate, coffee, blue moon, and mint chip. We ended up getting the chocolate in a cup and coffee in a cone. I could definitely taste the richness of the cashew milk base, especially in the coffee ice cream which made it simply delicious. The texture is more dense than dairy based ice creams, but still creamy enough for our liking! We'll definitely be back often as the weather warms up. read more

Awesome all-vegan ice cream spot in the Burgh! Right now, I believe it's only open on the weekends. They scoop 4 flavors at a time but have a variety of pints for purchase. They do unique flavors and often mix in other ingredients to the ice cream. When I went, the theme was childhood classics. They were scooping "Pb&J", "dunkaroos", waffle cone chocolate? ( I'm forgetting the name!), and cosmic brownie. I sampled all of the flavors and they were all very good. My boyfriend claimed the cosmic brownie was identical to "real" chocolate ice cream.
