    Delicious Ice Cream
    Valerie D.

This is an amazing place to get ice cream for everyone, not just vegans! My friend couldn't even tell that this ice cream was dairy free and she said she will be coming back for more! You are able to get just scoops of ice cream, choose a sundae, or make your own creation with a variety of toppings to choose from. You can even buy pints of ice cream to take home. Their flavors change every week so it is a good idea to check out their Instagram page to see what is available. Everyone who works here is very friendly too! Also, during the COVID-19 lock down, they are doing weekly sales where you can pre-order pints of ice cream online and pick them up on the weekend! Check out their Instagram for more detail and help support a local business! (:

Love this store that my daughter and I stumbled upon a few weeks ago after basketball practice. They only serve vegan foods so the ice cream is made with cashew milk and not cow's milk. They also don't use soy milk (which my tummy doesn't like). I got the pumpkin ginger snickerdoodle and my daughter got the dark chocolate arts. (my daughter thinks I'm nuts when I take pics of my food so she wouldn't let me get a pic of her ice cream). The ice cream we got was creamy, flavorful, and very satisfying. I really enjoyed mine and my daughter loved hers. We'll be coming back.

I've been wanted to try Sugar Spell Scoops for months and I finally made my way to Sharpsburg to give it a taste... it was SO worth it. I tried out the GF Chocolate Cookies and Cream and it was amazing. I don't normally steer towards chocolate in an ice cream store, but when I sampled this I couldn't pass it up. I got a single scoop and it was enough to fill me up for a late night snack! I feel like this ice cream is more filling because it is vegan made with nut milk. It is in a cute location I'm personally not familiar with, but would like to make another trip down to explore! They have mainly weekend hours, so I totally suggest taking the time on a Saturday or Sunday night to try out some of the vegan ice cream - you won't regret it!

This is their second weekend since Sugar Spell scoops opened and I was anxious to try it out. The place is run by two people of whom I got to chat and interview with Amanda who prepares the vegan ice cream from scratch. They currently have only 4 flavors but you are permitted to sample them all before purchase. The "blue moon" is an interesting flavor that is popular in states like Iowa. It has a lemony taste to it. It is something that tastes better the more you try it. Amanda explained to me that most of her ice cream is cashew based with the addition of hemp to give it that creamy texture. Where peanut butter is involved, then she uses that. Toppings are $.75 each extra if you are ordering a cup or a cone but are no additional charge if you are ordering a sundae. I ordered a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream and topped it with chocolate jimmies. One scoop is $4.00 but remember you are paying for plant based ingredients. They have a small sit down area which reminds me of the old style malt shop but you can take it to go. This ice cream was so good that I thought I was getting the real deal. Amanda told me that is her goal. You can definitely tell this was homemade from scratch and worth every penny! Take out is also available. They sell pint size containers for around $10.00. The famous "spaghetti" blend was sold out but they hope to have more as they establish themselves more. As far as drinks go you can buy bottled water or upon request they will serve you tap water in a plastic cup. Pittsburgh does not have many vegan stand alone places so this ice cream shop makes a welcome addition to our city. Their weekend hours are Fri and Sat 1-9 and Sun 1-7. I asked Amanda when they plan to transition to spring hours and she told me it would be in April. Located on Canal St just off of Main St in Sharpburg, inexpensive metered street parking is available.

FINALLY Sugar Spell has a physical location! This place is amazing and caters to vegans and gluten free friends alike. The atmosphere is super chill, with an old fashioned malt shop vibe with current new age feels. The shop is quaint with two booths and two high top seats, along with some board games in the back to keep people entertained. The ice cream itself is out of this world. For their grand opening weekend, they had four flavors to choose from: chocolate, rainbow vanilla, coffee, and mint chocolate chip. They offer several regular sundae flavors too, that you choose your ice cream for: PB&J, chic-o-finger, PB cup, S'more, and the classic. There is also the option to DIY a sundae and add any of their awesome toppings to it. There are also cones, including a GF cone option. You can always stop in for a pint, quart, half gallon, or wand to go! Various flavors are available. The staff are so accommodating to allergies and make every effort to display that the ice cream is made with nuts and alert people to what toppings may not be GF. They have shortened hours during the winter (only open on weekend) but plan to extend in the summer months. Highly recommend this place. The ice cream is worth it!

Best "ice cream" place in Western PA, hands down! Not only is the ice cream delicious, the atmosphere of the shop makes the entire experience even more special. And to top it off, the staff is so welcoming and friendly. Sharpsburg is lucky to have Sugar Spell Scoops Best of all, you can grab a wand or a pint to go so that you can enjoy it at home.

Fantastic vibe in there as well, cool lighting (although something from up above kept falling). It's a highly acclaimed place for a reason. I got to try their beet soup (borscht), tea, potato pancake, and rice pudding dessert. The menu changes decently consistently I believe, and I did visit a little while ago, for notice. The food was very tasty. Huge potato pancake that was cooked perfectly with a nice topping of what I can only describe as vegan sour cream and some sort of very flavorful vegetables. I quite liked it, surprisingly tasty and creamy topping. Now the borscht, which I tend to be picky with, was just okay. The number one detractor for the borscht was the salt level. The food is just far, far too salty (the pancake was pretty salty too). Other than that, quite good. Love the side of rye. The dessert was very good. Surprisingly light. Came with a little caramelized baked fruit on top (apple/pear, something like that). Rice was reasonably creamy and very flavorful. So good! All in all, a nice spot for a nice dinner. Especially great for vegans. However, the food did taste too salty for my liking.

The salad buffet was great, offering a bunch of options, all of which were pretty tasty. I didn't try the dessert section, but it was also pretty large. Overall, possibly the fairest deal on a meal you can get in the greater Pittsburgh region, while still keeping things healthy. The service matches the aesthetic...it's laid-back, totally unpretentious, and run by folks who just let you do your thing. But let's talk about the food, because it's some of the best vegetarian and vegan comfort food you will ever eat, hands down. I always crave their Seitan Reuben (and I'm not even vegan), which is so perfectly savory and messy, and if you go for their famous Sunday brunch, you have to load up on the sesame peanut noodle salad and grab a slice of whatever vegan cake they have out that day. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. So, actually a guy at the information booth was eating something from here and I asked him where he got it from because it looked very good and he recommended them to me. So we headed their way. Tbh: Every place that we wanted to eat at had a line 25-50 deep and we were super hungry and their line was only like 5-7 people deep which was a blessing. First off, the service in general was kind of crappy, but I understand as it was a hot and very busy day and from what they told my gf at the time they were getting low on food as well and only had a couple items that were left from the menu. After deciding what we wanted which was one of three things my gf at the time ordered us the Mac and Cheese and a container of ranch to take home while I looked for a place for us to eat. So after they handed her our food we headed over to an area with tables and chairs to eat the Mac and Cheese. I must say we both thoroughly enjoyed every single bit of it and my gf at the time isn't even vegan. So that says a lot! I highly recommended it :) FYI: The person who took her order also forgot to give her the container of ranch she paid for. I wasn't made aware that she purchased it until afterwards because my gf at the time wanted to surprise me but they didn't give her a receipt so she had no proof. Oh well, you live and learn, sadly! The vibe on this day was on point so we let the little things go in regards to the crappy service and the shorting us of an overpriced container of ranch fall to the wayside and continued on with our wonderful day, smiling and enjoying the amazing festival and area. If I decide to stop by your food trailer again this year at the festival or whenever I am somewhere you are posted up in front of, I hope you make up for your mistakes from last year because that's the right thing to do.
