The food didn't even leave a lasting impact in my mind because the service was medoicre at best. Group had a reservation at 11 and didn't get the food until 12:43. They served the bottles and juice for the mamosas but forgot the champagne flutes for 15 mins. They kept serving dirty cups and didn't take out some things the party asked for in the beginning. My friend wanted grits. Well, we found them. Very nice menu and selection for breakfast. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, very relaxing atmosphere with low lighting (which I love). The food was amazing. I would highly recommend that. Only reason 3 stars is because of the service. They where not very busy but waited 5 minutes before we finally flagged one of the 4 waiters walking around. Waited another 5 minutes before we even received or drinks after we had to say something again. Then when the bill was brought automatically put a $5 tip on a $25 ticket for 2. If that wouldn't of happened I would have left a larger tip than I added. All of this can be coached. If you over seat one waiter the others should help as you are a team. I really despise leaving less than mediocre reviews, and I'm always willing to give second chances; however, this is a legit two star review. There were three couples seated in front of us, even though we were clearly there 15 minutes before any of them. The hostess was overwhelmed and we dont know how, as it wasn't at COVID capacity. Upon arrival to a more than empty restaurant we were not greeted by anyone. After a few minutes of standing around someone finally came to the front. They didn't say anything to us, they just grabbed 2 menus and 2 table settings and started walking away. We also observed this happen to the 2 in front of us as well. But the real kicker was when the bill arrived with the wrong pricing on it and a surprise mandatory 20% gratuity. The manager stated that this is the way they operate even when questioned why it's not printed on the menu or a sign anywhere in the restaurant. The manager was not understanding and only seemed irritated that I question the bill or this "standard" practice. She complained it was done because of the low wages of the staff. Fresh made biscuits.. I mean that's about all you need to know! They make their our jam, strawberry and also peach. Skip the grape if you want better flavor, that's not scratch made. While the plain biscuits are good, their cinnamon one was my favorite! Orders for the group included all the top favorites and everyone was happy with their order. The meal (Sweet Shirley's Grits) was decent. The braised collard greens were tasty with a bit of zeal and the fried chicken breast was flavorful. Overall, it was a good meal but it would have been nice if there was more of it. Particularly, if the "grit bowl" had a slightly bigger piece of chicken that would've justified the $14 price tag (plus 20% tip that the restaurant adds to the bill). Compared to the place I wanted to dine at earlier that occasionally has similar chicken entrées as specials, Sugar Grits falls a bit short on substance. Of course, the restaurant's lease has to be paid by somebody, ergo pricey entrées. This is not to say that I won't dine at Sugar Grits again (or that I won't order the same thing again) but I will consider other options before going back again. I found this place with a search looking for breakfast places when I visited home. The menu looked fantastic and I didn't even think to look at the reviews. That was a mistake. Our server was really nice and my 1 star is reserved for her happy disposition because that's really the only thing this place has good going for them because they really should not be in the business of serving food. We got the biscuit board. This looked so exciting on the menu, but was a huge let down. The biscuits were all three different types of textures and none include light and fluffy which is what a biscuit should be. I'm not sure who told them they make good biscuits because someone lied. The cinnamon sugar biscuit was flat, dense, and burned. Basically just sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on an old biscuit. This one was just wrong on so many levels. The regular biscuit taste like a frozen biscuit. It was cold and hard. The blueberry biscuit was by far the worst of the three. It was dense and had no airy pockets, layers. It was just a cooked ball of dough with exactly 3 blueberries. The shocking thing is they charge $3 each for these! The preserves that came with it were forgettable and has no business being served at a restaurant. Hell my grandmother wouldn't serve those at her breakfast table either! The grape tasted like generic jelly out the jar (sorry, not, sorry Smuckers would have been better). The homemade whipped butter on the menu were just the little packets from commercial supply store. I will say the sausage was really good. It was the best part of the meal. I don't eat bacon so can not comment, but my husband didn't really like it. It also looked like it had been sitting around. I got an omelette because at that point I figured this meal was just a lost cause. I didn't know it was possible to not make good eggs, but somehow they even figured out how to make that mediocre too. I'm not going to describe it. It was just not good. Menu said fluffy omelette and what I got was just hard eggs. Husband got a grits bowl and looked nothing like the pictures. Somehow it came with a side of something that was not listed on the menu, but husband said it tasted like the French's ketchup that they had on the table. Overall, would not recommend this place. It's pretty hard to screw up breakfast but I can not name a place that I would say this place beats out in the food category. Seems like a tourist trap type of place. When there are so many Waffle Houses, Perkins, or even Denny's to choose from, I would definitely go there first before I drop another half hundred for an appetizer and 2 entrees here. This is my 1st time coming to sugar grits after rave reviews from my sister and best friend. Upon entering there was no acknowledgement from any staff members. After waiting a few mins and after numerous staff members passed by I asked a server are we to seat ourselves and with a snide remark she states "no ma'am I'm the only server here " (with an actual eye roll...I was shocked) when the server came to the table she began taking our order and her mask was below her mouth and she turned her head and coughed (I didn't see her cover her mouth) When ordering from the menu we all wanted the biscuit board and the look she gave each of us after ordering the same thing almost seemed as if she was annoyed with what we ordered.
