My wife came across this establishment on our trip to Memphis. Located downtown, came in and was quite a wait. Hostess explained that they were understaffed. After waiting for 15 minutes we got seated and was greeted by a fairly new waitress who was very sweet and explained and apologized for any inconvenience due to her just starting. She was very friendly and we ordered right away since we had time. Look I'm terrible at pictures I always forget, but trust me when I say that you have to try the Red Rooster it's a homemade honey biscuit with fried chicken, slice of country ham, fried egg and that biscuit with there was the . Sugar Grits The dish itself is best left for debate across the Mason Dixon, as to its heritage and the preferences of a grit. The wait was minimal for a Saturday morning, but we were quickly seated at the bar. The ambiance is what you'd expect out of the low-budget Honky Tonks of Nashville, with the same attitude being extended behind the bar - as Ole Smoky Moonshine is about the best you're gonna get. But the disappointment of the liquor selection was quickly drowned out by tunes of Dolly and Garth, admittedly hard to find in mainstays of the 901, and I found myself tapping my foot in rhythm as time passed. After a very drawn-out wait that left several patrons at the bar asking, "What's taking so long?" The bartender mumbled something about eggs creating a kitchen backlog as they only have four cast iron skillets, and I damn near heard my Aunt (God rest her soul) chuckle from Heaven. That woman only needed two cast irons to keep the eggs, the biscuits and the bacon in never-ending service to her eight kids. But I digress... "Low Country" cooking is what the menu claimed, but I've never paid upwards of $20 for a bowl of grits in my neck of the woods. Of course I hail from the Heart of Dixie and not some uppity Carolinas like the owners do, so probably just not my cup of tea. In the Deep South, $20 could feed a family, we'd have had a heartfelt conversation with the owners themselves, and blueberry biscuits wouldn't dare be served with raw dough in the center. This restaurant being independently owned has the makings for much more, and would be deserving of the price tag with a few minor touches: a warm and welcoming staff, quality sourced meats from local farms, and a little bit of elbow grease to kill them drain flys that kept creeping up. The sweetness of Southern hospitality can't be imitated, or branded by the name of "Sugar." Especially when you serve watered down jam. Bless their heart. Ultimately, this place will have the appeal of downtown tourists, I'm sure, but "Low Country" isn't a branded term of endearment - but a way of both living and eating to those who call the South home. Sugar Grits makes you want to cuss your MeMaw, no - not because it's that good. Rather, as any true southerner knows, a good cussin' would be promptly followed with a bar of Lye soap to the mouth, and well, that's exactly what you'll need after this meal. read more

Came here before a GRIZZLIES game on a Monday evening. Ordered the grits with shrimp and andouille sausage. Every bite was scrumptious.

My hotel was steps from this place so even with the mixed reviews I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did and I wasn't disappointed. The service was friendly but I had to ask for everything, spoon, enough napkins, just some basic things, especially on a Tuesday morning when the place was almost empty. Ok, why 4 stars? The food was just outstanding. I haven't been in Memphis for some time and I got what I wanted. This is our first time in Memphis and our niece made reservations at Sugar grits to meet for breakfast. We read the reviews and had mixed feelings. We almost didn't go and believe me We are so glad we went. First I would recommend a reservations only because people who didn't have one was turned away even when it looked as if seating was available. We probably waited about 15 minutes before we were served but that was ok since we were catching up talking.. Our server was Nick. He was the best, attentive, professional... you know the qualities you expect from your waiter or waitress. We ordered the Whistling Waffles x2 and the Rise and shine. When the table gets quiet and the only vocabulary you know is oh my, this is soooo good. What else can I say. This was my experience...and it was a great one. They put the black people in the back of the restaurant. We were seated in the back with no o e else and all the white people were seated in the front. Which by the way was much nicer than the back. When I inquired about this I was told that this was the next section up and that they go in order but again NO ONE was seated in the back area. By the way they had many open seats and booths available in the front My party and I decided not to have breakfast at this establishment as we were not comfortable with the how we were treated. Remyton either needs extensive training in the future, or has no business being a waiter. His presence throughout our visit was sparse. Even after telling him we were in a hurry towards the end, he never showed any sense of urgency. I love supporting small businesses. The location and the ambiance are really nice. The service/our waitress started off very nice. After she took our order she did not check on us regularly and it took our food a while to come out. Another waitress started helping out and she let management know we were unhappy. He came over, asked the issue and never came back. The food was good, presented really well. The mimosa were excellent. I went to Sugar Grits today after taking a break from Yelp review and felt this would be a great start back. Location wise: it's close to a lot of good and free parking, the stadium and is central to downtown. Food wise- I did not enjoy anything I ate. The grits had a sand texture and were not edible, the hash brown had a burnt taste and the biscuit came out hard. I went with a friend and all of the food you see in the picture arrived in less than 25 minutes. The eggs had the texture of WIC eggs (if you know, you know). The best part were the mimosas. You can order a mimosa bucket for $25 and it's enough for two people. There is a required 20% gratuity no matter party size and the inside is a decent size for mid size parties or groups. I see the direction they were going in but I just did not enjoy the food. The waitress and stuff are amazing and even adjusted our bill for us at the end to remove the food that was completely inedible. read more

This place had great reviews and we are really glad we tried it. The Cowboy cinnamon roll is the largest I have ever seen and was excellent. Their biscuits are perfect home made biscuits you would expect. We aren't grits fans but their cheese grits were really good. I really wanted to love this place but there were a couple of issues. I know that there are situations that arise in restaurants however some are just disappointing. I visited yesterday for breakfast at 9 am. We were seated quickly and the service was good. We attempted to order a biscuit board but soon found out that the oven was broken and cinnamon rolls, waffles, and biscuits would not be available. I ordered the chicken fried steak which was delicious and my date ordered the home on the range. He substituted turkey sausage and his entree came out with steak but was fixed quickly when it was brought to the server's attention. There were biscuits that were brought in from a "sister" restaurant but they were dry and disappointing. I will visit again on the strength of the entrees which were delicious. read more

Ate there twice. They tend to over cook food. Eggs are ok. Bacon, sausage patties are both overcooked. French toast was good. Red rooster was - biscuit and chicken, very crunchy. Fried egg was good. Yolk was just passed soft. The sausage gravy was thin, not thick. Sausage was tasty. The biscuits were cooked crunchy, not flakey. Maybe that's the plan for them. Yes, the cheese grits and the standard eggs are fine but the highly-anticipated chicken and waffles a letdown. My first clue should have been the almost empty dining room...but I wanted to think positive.
