Best Sandwich in Town! Found this place on Yelp and I'm so glad I decided to stop in. Only one person ahead of me, and while all the tables were full, it didn't matter since my order was to-go. I went with a roast beef on wheat with everything except jalapeños, plus chips and a bottled water. I was a little worried it might take a while since there were people still waiting for their food at the tables--but that wasn't the case. My order came out surprisingly fast. And wow... this has to be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The wheat roll was soft, the roast beef portion was generous, and the flavor was spot-on. We usually share a sandwich on most days but also like getting our own for left overs. The staff is always super helpful and quick service. This is a great locally owned business. My partner frequently visits but this was my first time. The sandwich was filling and made with fresh ingredients. I chose the kids meal with the 3 inch size and was very satisfied. In the past my partner and I would split the larger portions. The price can't be beat. Amazing! Are you kidding me? I've been going to chain sub shops when this superior sandwich shop is just 15 min from my house?!?!?!?!? My brother put me onto the Best Sandwich Shop in the valley! The price is right, the sandos are huge, the freshness is on point, the bread is outstanding, even the packaging is impressive. I got a large #4, they automatically know I can't finish this bad boy, so they wrap half of it up to go! Genius! I don't have to go to back to the counter for a paper wrap or bag because they Know I can't finish it. Definitely the best sub shop in Merced County! The girl at the counter is awesome! The decor is fine, it's a sandwich shop, who cares about decor if the sandos are huge, delicious and priced right. I go all throughout California, trying to find large subs, and I was not disappointed in the destroyer. The amount of meat and toppings that are on the sandwich make it very easy to get you into a food coma. Even during a packed lunch hour, it was not noisy or distracting to do work. I remember the old Sub Shop where the owners actually liked their customers. This new ownership is supremely disappointing. I have always enjoyed the sandwiches here which is why it is such a shame that I will no longer be giving them my business nor will I ever again recommend them to anyone. Most recent terrible experience involved attempting to get sandwiches made for a large gathering. Tried calling (during business hours) the day before for over an hour with no answer. Went in early the day of only to be told that I needed to call the day before, which as stated, I tried to do. Completely unaccomodating; almost as if they actually didn't want my business. It's just simply not the same Sub Shop that I remember. Downright terrible experience. Lifelong Atwater resident and Sub Shop customer but I will never come here again. read more

I've been going to the Sub Shop for many years and I've overlooked Yelp-ing it.. The customer service is Fantastic, it always has been. It's quaint and clean. They have daily specials written on a board, I believe Managers Special 1/2 sandwich or a full both come with drink and choice of chips. The other day I noticed they have an additional sandwich deal on the register, I hadn't seen it before however it's available as well (it's just a sandwich) you can add on chips, drink for additional charge. The menu has something for everyone. Also we ordered a six foot sandwich for a party we're having soon. It's perfect for a medium get together. You can look that up on line. My personal favorite is the grilled chicken with bacon on white bread and the bread is so incredibly soft so that it compliments the deli meats so perfectly well. I was a longtime, loyal customer at Sub Shop. It has always been a staple in Atwater. My first time in after the new owners purchased it, I was disappointed with my experience. My sandwich was sloppy and the person taking my order was snappy & rude. I recently gave it another try and took my order to go. The chemicals used to clean were very overwhelming upon entering. When I tried to eat my sandwich at home, I could still taste & smell the cleaning solution making it inedible. I appreciate cleanliness but not when it permeates my food. read more

So the wife and I were out shopping and we started to get a little hungry. Being in Atwater, the options were a bit slim. Using the power of yelp, I found the sub shop. This place had some decent star rating so we decided to try. I went with the full size pastrami toasted. I will soon learn I should have gone with the half sandwich. This full size was the equivalent to two full sized sandwiches. It was cut into four pieces. The wife went with a half. Smart girl for sure. The wife liked her sandwich. Mine was just ok. They use a sandwich style pastrami meat. I was expecting a delicious hot pastrami sandwich. I guess I was expecting more without knowing. Not their fault I was expecting more. I only ate half. I ended up giving the other sandwich half to a homeless lady outside. I would return but I would try a different sandwich. On Saturdays they run a special where you buy two sandwiches and you get a 3rd free. Let me say this, you can feed an army if you're taking advantage of the Saturday special.
