They seem to constantly be out of either bread, meats (like sausage), etc... it's a little frustrating that they're out of ingredients so often considering they're closed for the entire weekend... Staff also doesn't have the friendliest attitude a lot of the time, busy or not... This restaurant has a lot of potential, but management is definitely their biggest weak spot. I come through Merced for a work trip and stop here every time for lunch. The roasted vegetable sandwich and pesto pasta salad are my absolute favorites. I sometimes get an iced coffee and it is a generous portion. The bee pollen tea is quite good too, although expect it to be sweet! The staff is friendly (you can tell it is a family run spot). My mother called in and ordered a breakfast burrito with egg whites and ham, dressing on the side, chicken pesto sandwich with aoli on the side and pesto pasta salad for the side. Then she ordered hers and that was a roasted veggie sandwich with garlic aoli on the side and chicken added and she wanted potato salad on the side with it too. The worker said it would be twenty minutes. We planned on having half of each sandwich to get to try both. We went to get it. The worker was masked and very kind. The order was ready. The restaurant was very clean. They have outside seating. No eating inside given these times. My pesto chicken sandwich was really great! Focaccia bread was fresh and delicious! Pesto chicken cooked perfectly! Very tasty aoli sauce too! Yum! The pesto pasta was OMG amazingly delicious! It has so much flavor! Cheesy gooey goodness! Do not come here, do yourself a favor and go to Jantz or Bagel Thyme. The teller didn't check to see if they had the food we ordered after we placed our order. They didn't offer us a refund and instead of our bagels they gave us toast. Toast with butter....which was far cheaper than what we paid for. Normally restaurants would upgrade you to another food item and have you pay the difference, not here. We also had to tell them that they were out of coffee...and had to wait for them to brew a new batch because they didn't know. We tried to be nice and brought it up to them ourselves, but no one thanked us for letting them know or even smiled. When they brought the food out the woman uttered an offhand "sorry" with her back turned to us. Incredibly rude, especially to two people who didn't complain about being shorted for our money and who were being polite. They don't care about the food they serve or their customers. Poorly run. This place used to be a drive-by coffee stand on R St., but now it's a sit-down (or take out) coffee shop where they serve breakfast and lunch, and occasionally cater dinner or have a special dinner once a month or so. They also cater-- both for "coffee" events and for weddings, etc. I've used this place for coffee, lunch, and I've had a nice dinner there at one of their once-a-month events. They do well with all three. Coffee: There's plentiful seating inside and out (unless more people hear about it, and it starts getting crowded). They serve the typical espresso, coffee, specialty mochas, italian sodas, and some tea. Don't come here for the tea, especially if you're a tea aficionado. Sorry. Lunch: Multiple times, my guy and I have eaten here-- sandwiches with a side of couscous, or salad, or pasta salad. Yum. They also have nice salads. It's high-quality, but good prices: no ice-berg lettuce here. Also, the staff are always friendly. Dinner: either call or stop by and find out when they're doing these special dinners. They turn down the lights, bust out candles and special decorations, and transform this cafeteria-like place into a romantic diner with tableclothes and gourmet prix-fix food. It's BYOB, but that's fine with me! We loved the soup (I think it was butternut squash with granny smith apple), the main courses were delish, the appetizers were gorgeous (nice cheeses and a small antipasto in a martini glass), and the dessert was rich and creamy (a chocolate mousse). Seriously, go here. I can't vouch for the catering, because I haven't experienced it. read more
