Their hamburgers are incredibly delicious, a nice size to them and their french fries are crispy crunchy. I need to try their Philly cheese steaks next time. Service is great. Order at walk up window or from car. Friendly service, typical drive in from back in the day. Playing 50/60's music as well. We ordered 3 burgers a regular cheese burger and 2 bacon burgers one with regular fries one with onion rings and one with chili cheese fries. Ordered 3 shakes to take home. Can't wait we r hungry. Burgers were really good. Thin patty and good flavor, everything was fresh lettuce shredded and tomato. Decent burger and chili cheese fries were so good. Would come again. Shake mine was pineapple banana and it was thick and yummy. Small just the right size. French fries were seasoned nicely. Onion rings were flavorful and nice and crunchy. read more

Very pleasant staff. Always great service. Everything cooked fresh and very tasty! We make this our refreshment stop on the way to and from Yosemite. Nice outdoor tables to order at their window and dine outside, or order car service. We really enjoy the guacamole burger and the fried zucchini. H&W Drive In is a cool local spot in Merced. This was not a drive thru fast food restaurant. But, more of a drive in (hence the name) or walk up place. Customers can either drive up to order and have the food delivered to their car. Or, can walk up to the window to place orders to eat at the tables outside or take to-go. The staff was nice. Orders came out quickly. We tried a few of their items - Tuna Sub, Bacon Cheeseburger, Patty Melt, Fries, and Onion Rings. Their fries are crinkle cut in case that matters to you. We enjoyed all of the food. They were all well made and tasty. And the portions seemed to be on the larger size. Prices were quite reasonable. We would go back again if ever in the area. read more

One of my favorite burger places. H & W is a family favorite. They have amazing crinkle fries with season salt. Ranch is extra, but so worth it to me. They have a VAST menu with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and so much more. Food is always good. The car hops are super friendly and remember my family's order. Cool drive in restaurant with lots of outdoor seating. Lunch time can be busy as many city road crews and construction crews lunch there, but if you hit at a non peak time, good is ready fast. read more

In any new city I'm passing through, especially the small towns, I always look for the local burger spot, which took me to HW. First thing you'll notice is the prices. Coming from the Bay, whenever I see burgers under $9 I'm going to salivate. I decided to go with a double western burger and fries. Aside from the giant hair I got in the first bite, it was a tasty burger. Meat was juicy, crispy onion rings, and really filling. My only wish was that it had some mayo, I think it was missing something to bring it all together but I still enjoyed it. The food wasn't super quick, but I wasn't in a rush so no big deal. It's old school with the option to order from your car while a waitress comes up to you to order. They also have an ordering window for to-go OR if you want to sit at one of their many outdoor tables, a server can take your order from there. Been here many times traveling up and down 99. I've never had a bad meal here. The burgers are top notch, I love their pastrami burger. Ice cream is really good, the soft serve is the type I remember of old. It's not the nasty soft serve you find everywhere else nowadays. The star is their own root beer, great crisp flavor. The staff is hard working and friendly. It just has a great feel to go with great food. read more

At H&W, you really get to experience a drive in kind of atmosphere! Unlike the drive thru windows at your local fast food establishment, you park up at a fixed menu sign and wait for a worker to walk up to your car window to take your order and drop off your delicious burgers. My partner and I didn't realize the nuance of this establishment until we already parked in their lot and walked to the front window. Darn it. Maybe next time! Anyways, onto the food! We ordered their French bunned hamburger which definitely was large, juicy, and enough for 2, an order of curly fries and onion rings and a spicy link to munch on. Everything came out nice and hot and was a true experience of fast food. We waited for about 10 minutes for our order, despite there being a sizeable crowd of people on a Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed the burger, but found myself wishing for a bit more salt. I'm used to have a thinly seared layer of seasoning or salt on my patty, so it was unfortunate I didn't get it in the H&W burger. Nonetheless, the burger was juicy and had a good meat to bun ratio! And like others have mentioned, their fries do have a good serving of seasoning and crispness! You'll definitely regret not getting a side of fries with your burger. read more

Very unhappy with my service!! This place use to be amazing but after my last visit I can say I will not be returning, food use to be good but now just ok and the service I got from server monica didn't help my experience either, the wait for food was longer than I'm use too and my server talks too much to the other cars and me while my food was inside getting cold, I understand trying to give good customer service but she was begging for a big tip seemed talking to customers was more important than getting my food out in a timely manner... read more

I wish I could give negative stars!!!!! The worse place of the year!!! Never again will I visit this place. We have a large family of 11. Placed our order paid $150.00 for our food and they forgot items. Then, said we weren't charged for it. Fine, I'll pay for our missing food. Just give us the food we need to feed my kids. It wouldn't be fair to come home and not have food for all the kids!!! So I will pay for the missing items that she forgot to write down and we ordered one by one. BUT as they hand me the food after about a 35 minute wait that was initially paid for. She says she had to charge me for the missing food. Ok charge me! I'm willing to pay already for your mistake. However, instead of charging me right away and putting my order in because my other food was already getting cold. She makes me wait for the next 5 people in line to order. Then, takes my order, with attitude mind you.... And I have to wait another 25 minutes for a single combo meal! The worst!!! I will never recommend this place for anything!! This was the saddest visit!! Someone needs to get control of this place!! read more

I'm just a bit disappointed. I come here a lot and I always get the chicken salad. Today I asked for extra chicken just to make sure I was getting my protein intake. I was charged $4.99 for additional chicken so the total of the salad came close to $13. When I received it, it looks like the standard order of regular chicken. I did bring it up to them, but the kitchen said they gave me extra so. Unfortunately I have to go find my salad elsewhere. I just feel like if they see me so often here and I took the time to mention it to them, they could of at least offered a remedy. read more

When I was working in Merced, I used to head over to H&W for lunch from time to time. Good burgers and fries. Friendly staff. This place can get busy on the lunch hour, so be prepared for a bit of a wait when the parking lot is full. Stopped by recently for a shake. Yummy and reasonably priced. read more

Got the French burger, which is a good value for $7. The roll was dry and the burger was rubbery, but overall it tastes good and hits the spot. The root beer is delicious. I can see why this place is so popular with the locals. Car hop service just means they'll bring the food to your car. There aren't many of these around anymore, but this isn't like American Graffiti. It looks a little run down, though the service is great. Just wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. read more

Went to H & w today. Usually has been a great spot but unfortunately not today. Burgers were just ok and fries and zucchini sticks were very very greasy like they aren't draining the oil or something. Zucchini sticks were even worse oil dripping out of bag that they were in. Hopefully they can do better next time or might have to try different spot. Also fries and zucchini sticks were very bland. No seasoning hardly. read more

They say it's a half order but that is the huge biscuit and with gravy you would need a party of four to finish. The flavor of the beans were just wonderful. I filled myself up on those and then sopped up some of the beans gravy with the biscuits. My taste buds were very happy. My stomach was over full. I enjoyed some banter with Jenny and her husband along with some patrons that came in. They really try to make everyone feel so much like they're just walking into a family kitchen. I highly recommend a stop and introduce yourself and make some new friends and find yourself a lovely bakery. That's been there right around the corner from the park.

Gateway is in a horrible spot, but their pizza is good with fresh ingredients and a decent value for the amount you receive. The service, always take out is lackluster and weird, but for a good pizza I will suffer.
