Eddy is an amazing colorist. He makes this Italian girl look like she was born to be blonde. He's been transforming my naturally drab brown hair to platinum for years. My hair is shiny & healthy even with all the chemicals it takes to process the color. He recently shifted to Studio 9. The salon staff is fantastic! Erycah made the transition easy. She is super friendly! Marie gives a great shampoo and scalp massage. I don't know what I would do without Eddy in my life & I'm so happy to have him surrounded by a great team. I went here with a Groupon ($30 for $60 worth of services), and chose to get the eyebrow shaping with Cindy (normally $45). The salon is lovely (wood floors, lots of light). It's on the 7th floor in the same building as Salon Mario Russo on Newbury St. The eyebrow station is a chair in front of a vintage-looking mirror surrounded by round bulbs. Cindy observed my face, then plucked my eyebrows while maintaining a nice conversation. She also pointed out the spots that she recommended I grow out. On my way out of the salon, I ran into a coworker who was also getting her eyebrows done...Cindy sure is popular! Pending two visits to Rachel's Makeup Studio (a gift from a friend who swears that Rachel is the absolute best at eyebrows), I can't crown Cindy the eyebrow queen of Newbury St, but will give 3.5 stars for sure. I bought a Gilt City Voucher for a Keratin Straightening treatment here. I can't remember who did the treatment, but she did a pretty good job. What I really loved about this place is they had cheese and crackers and fruit laid out and tea, coffee, water. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. I love to be pampered, so after my first bite of yummy cheese and crackers, I immediately decided to love this place. The woman who washed my hair spent like 10 minutes giving me a scalp massage. I didn't have a great experience at this place, and I didn't have a decent hair cut. The bangs were the worst part that I had to use a hair pin for about a 6 weeks after the haircut. I had had a haircut for $ 25 couple of months before i went to studio 9, and i've had a lot of ppl complement my hair AND the bangs! I also ended up having a mushroom looking head. she did a lot of inside layering, which made my hair look thinner. The owner of the place is not very welcoming; when i first got there, she handed me something, which I assumed I should put on, and she went to sit on her office without saying anything. I was there in the middle of the place standing awkwardly waiting and looking around. Honestly, i would not go there again, and wouldn't recommend it at all. There are a lot of better place and they give awesome hair cuts for third the price. (she charges $90 for a hair cut) No thank you! i only went coz i had a groupon coupon. read more

Supposedly the best brows in Boston... Cindy is SUPER nice and friendly- and I LOVE that she plucks and does not wax. The salon is not overly pretentious but...I said I prefer to wear my brows on the fuller side, they were quite a lot thinner than I expected. I would like to go back and try again but I just don't know that I can be sure it will all grow in again if it happens again. I'm so, so happy I found Studio 9 and Deb Welch (the owner). She colored and styled my hair for my wedding, and I don't think my hair's ever looked better. Deb was patient and personable with me from the first consultation - she listened carefully as I talked through my hair woes and wish list, and she created a style that was exactly what I wanted. It's very clear that Deb is passionate about what she does; she is incredibly creative, and she is able to use hair as the medium through which to create art and sculpture. I know that description sounds way too cerebral, but there's no other way I can think to describe Deb's approach and love for her craft - she really knows how to "paint" with hair. Aside from her incredible technical skill, Deb is also an absolute sweetheart; she came on-site to do my hair on my wedding day and kept everyone talking and laughing, diffusing everyone's nerves. Lawni Hamilton is AMAZING. He was recommended by many of my friends whose hair always looks incredible and I was finally able to get an appointment (check out his IG @hairbylawni.hamilton). He really listened to concerns about my hair, gave me a cut that miraculously made my hair look longer when I said I wanted to keep my length and was so fun and knowledgeable to talk to. He also didn't try to aggressively push any extra treatments or other add ons which I really appreciate since it happened so frequently at other salons. I got a $60 groupon as a gift for Studio 9. I ended up using it to book an appointment with Cindy for my eyebrows. Cindy was friendly and knowledgeable. She didn't use wax like most salons do to clean the eyebrows. Overall, the experience was great. However, I don't have unruly eyebrows and they are pretty easy to maintain. So it doesn't make sense for me to fight the traffic to get to Newbury, look for a hard to find parking spot, and pay $45 plus tips just to get my eye brows done. read more

Studio 9 is fantastic and Lauren Todd is incredible! I have been going to Lauren for about two years now. I won't put my hair in anyone else's hands. Lauren also has a great sense of style--she has never forced me into a look, but I always walk out of the salon looking better when I take her advice. She is simply amazing and her skills are so versatile for all different types of hair. I have lots of friends who go to Lauren all with different colors and textures and she is able to somehow magically bring out the unique beauty in everyone's hair and find styles that look great on them. Unfortunately I had a terrible experience at Studio 9, however I cannot speak for their actual services. I had a 12:30 appointment and showed up at 12:15. I waited for a half hour and finally went to ask how much longer it would be to wait. I was told just a few minutes, so I continued to wait. When my stylist finally finished with her other client, she did not start with me, but went to eat her lunch! I had to go refill the parking meter so that I wouldn't get a ticket, and finally at 1:30 they were ready. However, by that time I had to leave for work. Long story short it was terrible customer service. I hope that this was just a one time deal, but I will certainly not be returning. read more

I've been going there for more than a decade and even before then when Claudette was just down the road at another salon. My daughter goes to her now too for the latest color techniques and trends. I like that she is always training on the latest techniques, styles and products. Studio 9 offers other services too so I can get brows, nails, etc., done as well if I want. I went in for a cut, highlights and blowdry and although it took a total of two hours it was worth it because she gave me exactly what I wanted - a trim with subtle color and a blowdry that lasted 4 days! I bought a Buy With Me for a Shellac manicure because I wanted to try a manicure that wouldn't chip and would last longer than 24 hours. I had never heard of Studio 9 but it turned out to be a really convenient location and is just a couple blocks from work. I had my manicure done with Maya and she was just amazing! She was extremely friendly and she told me all about the new technology of the Shellac manicure since I had never had one. She was super easy to talk to and she was a perfectionist with my nails, which I greatly appreciated! They were filed perfectly, painted beautifully, and the whole experience was just A+! It's been a week since I got them done and they're still shiny and chip-free. I will definitely be going back in another week or two to get another manicure and plan to keep returning. I really like this salon. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the place is designed really well, making me actually enjoy hanging around while I wait for my highlights to set. I've been to see Izabela twice and love her! She made my hair look exactly how I wanted it to with little to no direction and she's wonderful to chat with. She really knows how to take someone's ideal vision of what they want to look like and make it a reality, which I've found to be pretty rare in stylists. I love Studio 9, hands down. I have been going here for over five years and getting an amazing cut from James every time. After the first cut he gave me I have never had to request "what I want/how I want" my hair to be cut/styled, leaving me more time to chat. The staff and crew are always friendly; they ask if you would care for coffee or water, you get a phone call the day before to remind you of your appointment. I have always chosen an end of day appointment toward the end of the week for my own convenience, and still have always received tremendous service over the years. The floor lay out is open and all of the windows make for a great view of Newbury. Before coming to James at Studio 9 I use to subject myself to other stylist and barbers who were never able to match the quality I receive here. I would recommend Studio 9 to anyone, with the great service and friendly atmosphere; I think this is one of the Best of Boston. read more

I've been a client of James' for almost 14 years now and have always been happy and completely satisfied with his styles and haircuts. James just has that knack of knowing what style will look the best and flatter your face. Having my hair cut/styled/+/-colored by James is my every 6 week indulgence and I always feel great after I leave the salon. I will start out by saying, I am a bit biased when I talk about Debbie Welch and her new salon. Deb has been cutting my hair since she was 16 years old. Yes, 16. One day, I got a BAD haircut. I was so upset. Deb wasn't even out of high school, but loved working with hair and giving haircuts to her family and friends even before she went to school for it! She offered to help me and I was hesitant at first, I mean what could a 16 year old kid know about cutting hair?? I am very picky with my hair (probably more like neurotic) and was very nervous to let a kid in high school work on my hair, but she did great! She saved me from the perm from hell! (yes kids this was in the 80's, so give me a pass here) From that day on, Debbie was my stylist. Over the years, I have watched Deb become the wonderful hair stylist she is today! I happily volunteered myself to be her "dummy" when she took her hair stylist test! I watched her slowly move up the chain at a well known stylist on Newbury. I was always impressed with how she embraced direction and the teachings from the experienced stylists she worked with. Always looking for direction and suggestions. She always works on trying enhance her craft (I know this, because my head is the one she sometimes conducts the experiments on! hehe) I also know Deb has dreamed of owning her own studio since she was a kid. She has worked hard over the years and has finally reached that dream. When I walked into her studio for the first time, the pride and happiness I had for Deb was overwhelming. She did it! Her place is beautiful. Full of wonderful down to earth people who without hesitation embrace you the minute you walk into the salon. You are first welcomed by Reena, the wonderful kick butt receptionist, who always greets you with a great big smile! Then you are escorted for the hair wash and at this time, you will experience a massage like no other, from Marie. Then it's time to sit in a comfortable chair, cool music playing in the background, and happy people all around you! The studio has exposed brick and comfortable furniture while you wait. I could go on, but then you would think I was over embellishing! To wrap it up, Deb, I am so proud of you! Personally I think you are a genius when it comes to hair (especially mine, I know it's a challenge) and I am so proud of you and your accomplishment at Studio 9!
