My girlfriend is a big fan of gelato so if she recommends this place, it must be good. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was quite delicious. $4.50 for a small cup which is pretty good price for gelato. We shared it between the two of us and we thought it was plenty. We got the classic strawberry one and their captain crunch flavor. My girlfriend liked the strawberry one more because it was fruity. I LOVED their captain crunch one. I thought it was perfect. This place is ultra tiny with big flavor to boot. This place is awesome for any season. They have a very simple menu with just enough to satisfy just about any palate. The location is phenomenal in relation to all the other restaurants nearby and you would be doing yourself an injustice if you didn't top yourself off here. Strawberry Fields (SF) is located in the business district of Ghent on Colley Ave. Owners Curt and Heather Wynn opened their shop in 2012, and serves homemade gelato, freshly squeezed juices, and fresh fruit smoothies. Their shop is small so it's really not a place to eat inside. I love SF's gelato. Not only is it delicious, and they offer different flavors all the time, but gelato has half the fat and a third of the calories of ice cream. I know! Who would have thunk? If you're looking for an even healthier option, their juices and smoothies are full of fresh ingredients. They only use a touch of honey in their smoothies instead of other sweeteners. While traveling from Newport News to Norfolk to catch a movie at the Naro Cinema, my girlfriend and I decided to make a stop here, which is right across from Naro. It's a small ice cream shop which serves gelato ice cream (healthier than the traditional ice cream we eat) and smoothies. The décor is nice with some pictures on the walls, makes you feel right at home. Do keep in mind there's only one small table inside so if you plan on bringing a huge crowd, you're out of luck. Their flavors do vary week after week which is pretty cool. I decided to pick the maple bourbon gelato flavor over the brown butter pecan flavor (trust me, it was a tough choice). Really good and creamy. Not overly sweet. And the fact this was homemade is a huge plus. My girlfriend had a smoothie and thought it was really good (forgot which flavor she picked). I got an OG Açaí and subbed blueberries in for the banana (I hate banana), and got a cone with Samoa Gelato. Everything was so good!! The smoothie was only about 80¢ more than my usual tropical smoothie order, with the added bonus of supporting local business and being healthier for me, with no added sugar besides the honey they put in. The Samoa gelato tasted exactly like those Girl Scout cookies. Incredible- I'll be back and I'm happy to have a fun new place to go. read more

Fantastic gem of a gelato shop that I happened to stumble across on a Saturday trip to Ghent. The cashier was incredibly sweet and let me try a couple of flavors. First of all, props for the creativity. Pineapple chai, who would have imagined that flavor could exist? But the two I ordered and mixed together were the peach cobbler and the brown butter pecan. The latter blew my mind, the crunch of the pecan, mixed with the richness of the brown butter. If you think all butter pecan ice creams are the same, you need to try this one and you'll taste the difference. Less than five bucks for a small cup, and while the portion isn't enormous, it fills you up pretty fast. Definitely worth a trip back to try some new flavors. read more

Yes! Absolutely yes! Do not think twice about checking them out! Their ice cream is amazing! Customer service spot on, even with them being busy they take the time to explain everything and let you try the ice cream. So fresh and so creamy! They also don't use any artificial flavoring or dyes unless it is has it in a mix-in, for example Oreos (artificial flavoring). Keep in mind though that the flavors ch age I believe daily, so if you are looking for a specific flavor toy might want to call to see what they have. Finally got around to trying this place while I was in the area hanging out with friends. I love ice cream, the Beatles, and strawberries so of course I had this place bookmarked for a while. I tried the blueberry and cream ice cream. It was okay - honestly I only got it because it was pretty. They ran out of the cups with the logo so it didn't end up looking as cute in the photo. *sad face* One thing I will note is I think they need to wash their scoops better in between use. I got peanut butter in my ice cream, which wasn't a big deal to me. However it's still something to consider as cross contamination can be a big issue for those with allergies. Ice cream is very good. They also had a non dairy option which was great. It's not a huge selection but the ones that are there are worth it. They are still full COVID mode when I went where there was no going indoors so if that bothers you (or I suppose if it is raining) that exists. His was very lavender forward, but good. Both so creamy, definitely hit the sweet tooth. A little pricey (I think $9 for 2 smalls) but so delicious, so I didn't mind. What a nice surprise! Stumbled on this place by accident but the delicious smell of all the fresh ingredients inside the establishment helped me make up my mind to order. The gelato is SO flavorful! My husband got the peanut butter cup gelato and it was seriously the best gelato/frozen yogurt I have ever had. It even had pieces of peanut butter cup in it! The gelato tastes like they really take their time with it and I really appreciate that. I got the pine island smoothie (pineapple, strawberry, banana & apple juice) and it was alright. It was fresh and fulfilling but it wasn't very sweet. I think this is because they only use fresh fruit and honey to make their smoothies, no extra sugar is added. Maybe next time I'll add a little gelato in the smoothie to sweeten it up! Overall I would definitely come back again and I think this place is a hidden gem. Update! On my second visit I got the Mad Mango Smoothie and it has more flavor than my first smoothie here! I really enjoyed it and like how the smoothies are homemade and don't taste processed or unnaturally sweet. My husband got the gelato and had a mix of Fruity Pebble (LOVE!) and their Stracciatella. Strawberry Fields is the newest spot to churn up on Colley and being the overzealous independent fan that I am, I had to go get the scoop. It's a small location (previously Swirls) but unlike it's predecessor, I appreciate their use of the limited space. Specializing in fruit smoothies and homemade gelato, they hope to target a market that Skinny Dip's wrinkly fingers can't grasp. I can only speak on the gelato but with that said, I'm going to have a hard time deviating from it on future visits. Visually this stuff is beautiful and the banana pudding with full vanilla wafers in the mix was the first to catch my eye. Guy working the counter was quick to tell me he had made it 10 minutes ago! I was juiced. So far so good. He whips my treat up and flings around an iPad in a custom made wooden swivel case which serves as the register. Ok, so I get it, it's been done before, but when I was typing away at that thing, I felt like Steve Jobs was smiling down on me. After a big dinner across the street we decided to pop into Strawberry Fields for desert. This place is tiny, and I mean tiny, and you'll miss it if you don't know it's there or aren't looking for it. However small they are, don't be fooled, they have some huge treats inside. Being a first time customer I had assumed it was just another one of these cup cake places that has sprouted up in the area. I was so wrong. Strawberry Fields is a Gelato shop. What's that? Easy, Gelato is basically Italian Ice Cream. I looked at the chalk board and then at the Gelato in the case and decided on a cup with the chocolate / oreo mixture. Man it was good, it was so good... I found myself wishing I had gone with the pint instead... I know, I know... that pint never would have made it home, because I would have had to eat the poor thing before it melted... The horror of it all. Seriously this was some good Gelato indeed. My date ordered a smoothie called the Green Monster. It comes with Spinach, Kale, Fresh Squeezed Apple Juice, Banana, Greek Yogurt.
